  1. Kris, Maybe I'm wrong about Dr. Kaplan being at Tufts - he did all the procedures on Chick at my local vet's office. If he isn't practicing at Tufts, he's a Tufts alum. (My vet knows him as she's a Tufts alum - that's how I made the connection.) Sorry for any confusion. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Demon. Pat
  2. Kris, I'm so sorry to hear about what you're going through with Demon. The case for each dog is so different - but I wanted to share with you what happened with my 10 year old girl last fall. I had her in for an x-ray for something else and my vet found that her heart was enlarged - even for a greyhound. We did an ultrasound which showed the same thing but no masses (thankfully). It turned out that she had fluid build up around her heart that we monitored for 6 weeks or so (the cardiologist said sometimes the fluid gets re-absorbed into the system). With Chick, the fluid did not get reabsorbed so it had to be drained. The procedure went well and we monitored her every few months to see if more fluid would build up. It did not. We don't know why it happened - our cardiologist said that's often the case. Our cardiologist is Dr. Kaplan from Tufts. He's great. I'm not saying this is the situation for Demon - but thought it would be helpful to hear of my experience. Please keep us posted on what you hear. Pat Hall Ayer, MA
  3. I get most of my prescriptions from Foster and Smith - they've been great and the prices are very good. www.drsfosterandsmith.com Pat
  4. My senior boy (12 years old - will be 13 in May) has been on PPA/Proin for a number of years now (at least six) and has not had any side effects/bad reactions at all. It's really helped him a lot with his incontinence over the years. I have him checked twice a year by our vet to make sure. He is on some other meds (as I noted when I voted above) - soloxine (thyroid), Previcox, and Tramadol (Previcox and Tramadol are for his arthritis). Pat
  5. My girl, Chick had a serious case of pancreatitis when she was right around 8 years old. She was at the vets for 4 days on IV fluids and antibiotics. Initially she was at the office of a vet covering for my regular vet (who was away) and they had me move her to a 24 hour emergency clinic so that someone would be there around the clock to monitor her. So I would say yes - this dog should be monitored. Chick was fine after her stay in the hospital. I continue to monitor her diet and treats for low fat content and she has not had another recurrence. It's been a couple of years now. Good luck! Pat
  6. A Galgo is a Spanish greyhound. They can be smooth coated or wire. They are used mainly for hunting in Spain rather than racing.
  7. Hi Everyone, Dr. Liliana Marin, the Coordinator of the Greyhound Health and Wellness Program at Ohio State University, emailed Greyhound Friends regarding a survey they are conducting on health-related conditions of Galgos. They are trying to get as many Galgo owners as possible to participate in the survey. If you have a Galgo or know someone who does, please consider participating. Information from Dr. Marin is below: Dear Galgo Owner, The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine would like your participation in a survey to identify the frequency of health-related conditions in Galgos. The results from the survey will help us to better understand which diseases are most common in Galgo and will serve as a baseline to help us conduct clinical research to improve the health of Galgo. If you are interested in participating in the survey, please send an email to info@scoobymedina.com with the Subject Line: OSU Galgo Survey. And in the body of the email, please just write – your first and last name, phone number and email address. The deadline to confirm your participation is February 23, 2009. You will then receive an email from Ohio State University that will give you the instruction on how to complete the survey.
  8. The best price I got for Rimadyl for my senior boy (now at the bridge) was from Foster and Smith. I got a quantity of 60 75-mg tablets for $47.40 (this was a about a year and a half ago, so prices may have increased). Good luck with your boy! Pat
  9. Hooray! That is such great news, Amber! I'm so happy for you and Soul. Pat
  10. Joslin, I am so so sorry. You have been through so much heartache already. My thoughts are with you and Stormy. Pat
  11. Amber, I'm so sorry that Soul is so sick. It's got to be so hard leaving him at Tufts, but as many have said, it's the best place for him right now. You and he are in my thoughts constantly. I hope today brings some a diagnosis and help. Pat
  12. Amber, I'm following this and hoping you get some help at Tufts. What an awful thing to go through! My Toby went through something similar and it turned out to be colitis and he was fine, but it took lots of tests to be sure and it was so upsetting to go through. It is so unnerving to see that blood come pouring out! Hang in there. My thoughts are with you. Pat
  13. Gillian, I'm so sorry for what you and Catwalk are going through. Please let me know how things go at Tufts for Catwalk. I'll be thinking of you and hoping and hoping that Catwalk gets better soon. Pat Hall (I'm close to you here in Ayer, so if there's anything I can do to help please let me know.
  14. My girl runs a high creatinine level - fluctuating between 2.2 and 2.6. We discovered this about 7 years ago. Everything else is normal, so we decided this is normal for her. She's now 10 years old and has had this high level since she was 3. But, as mentioned, all her other levels are within the normal range. Good luck. Pat
  15. My girl, Chick, always runs a high creatnine level. I've had her since she was 2 1/2 - she's now 10. At first we were concerned about her creatnine level, but with monitoring it every few months for a year or two, we realized she runs high normally. Her levels are always in a range of 2.2 - 2.8. The information from Dr. Stack and from Dr. Feeman helped my vet to understand the differences in greyhound bloodwork. Good luck with your boys! Pat
  16. This is such great news! I'm so happy for Rizzo and for you - what a rough time you've been through. This is a great story, Maria. Thanks for sharing it. You made my day! Pat
  17. Tally, my boy who has a corn, doesn't wear them all the time in the house, but when he seems to be in a lot of pain and is limping a lot, I put them on him. I don't have his hulled as the corn grows back full size in less than two weeks. But I file it (he won't put up with dremeling) to keep it flat and I often soak it in epsom salts. The corn grows and then eventually comes out on it's own. My goal is to keep Tally as comfortable as possible as he goes through these cycles. Good luck! I hate corns! Pat My sleepy brain missed this post thanks for the input...I'll definitely be ordering some today! Does your hound wear them all the time inside?
  18. I have a pair of those indoor booties that Therapaw makes. They work very well in the house. They have the same non-slip rubber bottom that the regular Therapaw booties have but they're softer and more conducive to use inside. They're like bedroom slippers. In the summer, though, they will be warm but now that the fall is coming and cooler temperatures with it, they might work well for you greyhound. Pat
  19. My 12 year old, Tally, has been on PPA for many years now (6, I believe) and he hasn't had any problems with it. He's also been on soloxine all that time as well. Recently (a few months ago) we've added Previcox for his arthritis pain and he still hasn't had any issues. I'm having problems getting PPA now - all my sources have said it is on backorder so it looks like I'll switch to Proin. Pat
  20. Nancy, I'm so sorry Red had another seizure. How is he today? Pat
  21. This is such good news, Carolyn! And when I saw Hershey last weekend, it was so clear that he was happy and just loving life. His eyes just sparkled. He continues to be in my thoughts every day! Pat
  22. My boy, Toby, used to get those bites all the time in the spring and summer (he went to the bridge last February at age 12). They didn't bother him, but he'd get them almost constantly in black fly weather. I often sprayed him with Off bug repellent - the kind that was safe for kids - and that helped a bit. Good luck! Pat
  23. I'm so glad to hear the good news about how well Hershey is tolerating the treatments! I know he knows how much he's loved. He's a lucky boy to have you and vice versa. I hope to see you at the GAS reunion tomorrow! Pat, and Tally, Chick and Faye. Oh yeah - and Howard too.
  24. Yes - I agree - bug bites. My boy, Toby, now at the bridge, used to get these all the time in the spring and summer. It helped if I sprayed him lightly on his belly with the Off bug spray for sensitive skin and kids.
  25. Kerri, I'm so sorry to hear the news about Gus. I don't have any advice, but wanted you to know your in my thoughts. Pat
