  1. If raw feeding won't work for you you could check out Fresh Pet Select. Those are the only two diets that have been non-gas. My link
  2. I agree with your DH. Putting a "diaper" on a dog because the dog is unable to open the door and go potty would be cruelty. Would it be possible to feed her a little earlier and give her just a cup of food. After work give her the greater amount. Although some dogs do fine with only one feeding, it is putting a lot of food in the stomach at once if you feed kibble.
  3. Chestnuts aren't toxic although too many might cause tummy problems.
  4. I wouldn't give my dogs licorice. Something like sweet potato dog biscuits would be much better.
  5. I've been feeding my greyhounds with raised feeders for going on 17 years, so yes.
  6. Has Astro had any blood work done recently? I would ask the vet to do a comprehensive senior panel and a complete thyroid panel. If Astro is eating 6 cups a day and losing weight there is likely a medical reason.
  7. If at all possible feed three or even four times a day. That way you don't have to feed such a large amount and the dog's digestive system will likely handle it better. I also add Dyne to the feedings. Two tablespoons (one ounce) is 150 extra calories and they usually like it a lot. It can be found in most feed stores or online at.... Dyne link

    Glenn, I am so sorry.
  9. With my seniors it is a challenge to keep the weight on them so I certainly don't recommend changing or reducing their food unless it is medically necessary. My two seniors are fed a combination of home cooked, Fresh Pet Select (a refrigerated food) and EVO95 (canned). They are fed three times a day and I try to keep their calories up around 1800-1900 per day per dog. Regardless of the age of dog it is not as simple as "how many cups of food". You need to know what the dog needs in energy (calories) and what foods the dog best processes. Start with reading labels and learning about what the ingredients on the labels mean. As PhillyPups pointed out, a lot of the time with seniors you have to get creative.
  10. Until you decide you are ready to make the jump to raw why not try just adding a large tablespoon of pure pumpkin to her food and nothing else. One thing you don't want to do is start jumping around from kibble to kibble, that is guaranteed to screw up the tummy. Be sure it is pure pumpkin not pumpkin pie mix. look here
  11. Pam for a human diabetic peas, carrots and apples are eaten very sparingly because of the sugar content. At least that's what I remember from my diabetes nutrition learning when my son was diagnosed at 12.
  12. Vanilla yogurt with a little pumpkin mixed in and freeze in small ice cube tray. Pop out and store in Ziplock. A good summer treat. Graham crackers is a great idea!
  13. Diane, I am so sorry. Godspeed Princess I know there are lots of angels waiting for you.

Trudy I am so sorry. It's always so hard when we have to do the right thing. Godspeed Ryan.
  15. If your dog is clearing the room then the dog is being fed something that doesn't agree with the tummy/digestive system.
  16. Since mine are seniors I don't really want to know any earlier.
  17. Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, margarita in the other, body thoroughly used, totally worn out and screaming ~ WOO HOO what a ride!

  18. I'm so sorry Ryan is feeling worse. I know how hard it is for them to be old before their time, that was my Renie. Sending lots of good thoughts for Ryan, I hope the new vet can come up with a solution so Ryan will feel better.
  19. Have they cultured the urine? Possibly the antibiotic just isn't killing the bacteria off, only slowing it down so when he goes off the meds it flairs up. There are more then one antibiotic to treat UTI's, he may need a stronger one.
  20. That is what I am wondering also. Glad your baby is feeling better this evening.
  21. Some adoption groups will place seniors with health issues as long term fosters, so you don't actually adopt the senior and the group handles the vet bills. Obviously they have to approve the vet bills for the dog though.
  22. My Renie is one of the many angels on this 2009 list..... and the list is so long. It is heart wrenching to see how many there are, bless you all.
  23. Lynn, I am so sorry for your loss.
