  1. First I would try a little more meat without more bone.
  2. Turkey necks would be excellent for chewing. I also get beef ribs. With these and most chew things they should be supervised just in case. Bully sticks are great for heavy chewers, but again they need to be supervised. look here
  3. I would definitely feed her twice a day. Too much kibble in the tummy at once can cause loose stool. Edited to add, I feed 3 times a day but I know that won't work for some.
  4. Check to see if the store has the 6 pound roll and that may save you some money. Here Kroger has the 6 pound rolls for $10.99 and Randalls (Safeway) has it for $12.99 so significant difference. Also if you call Fresh Pet you can probably get some coupons. see here The expiration dates are pretty good, the rolls I have right now expire 7/29/11 and should be kept refrigerated but not frozen. Once the roll is open it can be kept refrigerated for 7 days. Lucy and Teddy go through a 6 pound roll a day except on raw days, then they get 4 pounds. It is a little pricey but Teddy has chronic pancreatitis and as long as I feed him this way he is fine. For him the raw is beef ribs, he cant handle anything like turkey necks. Lucy is a picky old gal and most of the time she eats pretty good on Fresh Pet. For her the raw is turkey necks. Good luck!
  5. I feed three times a day. My male weighs 88 pounds, he is not overweight, he is big, very large frame. My female weighs 78, also not overweight. On days that they just have Fresh Pet Select they get 3 one pound meals each. On days they have a raw meal they get 2 one pound meals each. Keeping enough weight on my girly as she has gotten older has been a challenge. Lucy will be 13 September. Teddy will be 12 in November.
  6. Fresh Pet Select is what my two seniors eat along with 4 to 6 meals a week of raw. I feed 3 times a day.
  7. Sounds like what you are doing is working.
  8. I bought 24 cans (12 for the kennel) at Whole Foods last week 4 for $5.
  9. Definitely I would use 3% per day of the beef divided in two meals to start. If he looks like he is losing weight then go up to 3 1/2%, etc. Long term just hamburger will not be enough, you will need to add variety but you can find lots of raw feeding info on Greytalk. I would stop the rice and increase the meat, but that's just me.
  10. Sending prayers and good thoughts for sweet Jabari. Hugs to you.
  11. I looked at the bullysticks at Costco and did not buy them because of source. Another vote for bestbullysticks.com
  12. Raw or cooked? If raw figure 3% of body weight per day to start out.
  13. Your best bet is too make a list of foods you are considering (cost wise and available) and spend some time looking at the manufacture's website for ingredients and calories. For weight gain you want more calories per cup because just adding more food may cause loose stool as your DH has found. Examples.... (I haven't fed either of these foods because I don't feed kibble) Origen Regional Red 480 kcal per cup Solid Gold Wolf King 364 kcal per cup
  14. I really wouldn't let her run "all out" like that. Take time to get to know her and for her to settle in. Even in your own (fenced) back yard it is advisable to make sure the dog knows where the fence is, and where windows and doors are, and to supervise, at least in the beginning. Greyhounds are in a controlled environment until adoption, they need time to adapt and learn the new life. A race is 40-45 seconds of all out running and then they are cooled down. Please be careful. Not trying to be a PITA but as Chris put it, I too am a worry wort.
  15. I have been feeding Lucy and Teddy Fresh Pet Select for about two years or so. We go through a six pound tube daily, so no, it isn't cheap but it is keeping my my two seniors happy and healthy. They each get 1 pound per meal and I feed three meals a day. link
  16. From what you have described I would definitely take her to the vet. A rumbling tummy means she isn't feeling too good and she is eating grass to try to make it better.
  17. Check the nutritional label on the kibble bag. If it is a lower protein food you could try a food with higher protein and it may satisfy her longer.
  18. Welcome to my world also. How old is she? For whatever reason every female greyhound we have had has gotten really picky as they age, usually between 9 & 10. The males haven't just the girlies. Lucy is 12 1/2 and for a couple of years or so she will have meals she eats with no issue and meals she won't. When she isn't wanting to eat I do try to "jump start" her with some sprinkled parmesan cheese, a few sprinkles of grated colby/jack or some crumbles of whatever I have at the time. Once she starts, she will usually eat most or all of her food. Of course if your girl is a youngster then ignore me.
  19. Watch his eyes, sometimes they will change from bright to dull. I have been where you are way too many times. One thing I learned was that I waited one day too long some of the times, thinking that maybe tomorrow it would be better, but it wasn't. I've come to some peace with promising that I will try to never wait one day too long again.
  20. I doubt that giving one Fresh Factor and one Joint Health per day is enough to help with anything, but as suggested you could call the folks at Springtime.
  21. Ducky, thank you for doing this list and sharing it. Godspeed to all the beautiful souls who are running at the Rainbow Bridge. :gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run:gh_run
  22. Kari I'm so glad that Spark's vet was good. Sending lots of prayers.
