  1. I don't often get to come to GIG because I'm usually hosting Greyhound Gathering - Kanab. But this year I'm taking a break, so I can join in the fun and not be charge! I'll be lead off speaker on Friday at Noon. Hope people show up . The blurb about the talk: Why Does My Hound Do THAT??? They Sniff, Snort and Snuggle. Roo, Roost and Run. WHY? We all know greyhounds are special, and their behaviors can cause you to hoot, head scratch and holler. During this organic Q&A session, your question gets you a free Why Does My Hound do THAT?? booklet. Other prizes given out during the talk too, depending on how fast and furious the questions fly from the fantastic audience. I was last at GIG in 2013, and we had over 100 humans and hounds hollering. Greyhound Gang will also be offering limited supplies of really cool t-shirts and Get Up & Go supplements (just on Friday and Saturday) - for arthritis, fear of storms/fireworks, to boost immune systems, help incontinence and separation anxiety and so much more. All products can be used by humans too! Looking forward to laughing with everyone - and petting lots of hounds.

  3. Greyhound Gang is Going to GIG! We are leading off the tremendous slate of speakers GIG has lined up this year with our Fast & Furious - and very organic - Q&A Session - Why Does My Hound do THAT?? Hundreds of hounds have taught me a lot, and as a former teacher, I love to pass knowledge on - particularly when it helps extend the lives and well-being of our hounds. Friday, 4/27 at Noon. Start off your GIG experience with love and laughter - you can always shop! Every question gets a booklet and surprises are given away throughout the session to humans and hounds.
  4. So many natural ways to help prevent arthritis. Lots of info at Greyhound Gang - LEARN - Arthritis. They include: - Joint supplements - Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin (each of them needed at 1500 mg daily), Vitamin C to bowel tolerance. - Turmeric Golden Paste for inflammation - Yucca Intensive - for inflammation - Mushroom Extracts - excellent to support the immune system, and other specific issues - including cancer! - Adequan Shots - Herbs, Homeopathy, Essential Oils - ACUPUNCTURE - Cold Laser Carpets, runners, yoga mats, sample rugs - whatever you can find at garage sales, costcos, dollar stores - put them down. Incontinence - I use natural methods to help. Azmira's Kidni Kare. You can buy washable incontinence pads for night time. Be very watchful with drugs. Look for blood, or darkness of poop which indicates GI issues from the drugs. I've also had greyhounds get dysphoria from Tramadol, and get depressed from Gabapentin. I'm happy to answer any questions at any time. Over the past 20 years, I've treated hundreds of hounds successfully with these modalities. I'll be at Greyhounds in Gettysburg giving the first talk on Friday at Noon, 4/27. You can prevent arthritis for a long while, if you give joint supplements daily.
  5. There are so many natural ways to stave off arthritis, and help repair it. I've had hundreds of hounds and many years to see the wonderful results of these modalities. Some of them include: - Joint supplements - Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin, Vitamin C, CMO - Anti-inflammatories - which are key - Yucca, Turmeric Golden Paste, Boswellia, Bromelain - Acupuncture - Cold Laser - Adequan - Herbs, Homeopathy, Essential oils...and more More info and details at Greyhound Gang - Learn - Arthritis I'm always available to answer questions and provide info. I'll be at Greyhounds in Gettysburg giving the first talk, Noon on Friday.
  6. if you did a tick panel before and she was fine, and there haven't been ticks, then probably you are fine. My recommendation (based on dealing with hundreds of hounds since 1996) is joint supplements (high quality, correct dose) and also if you want, the Adequan. I don't usually go to adequan until they are about 11 or 12, and have been on joint supplements, yucca for years. I also use acupuncture and cold laser as they age.
  7. Tick disease present in a variety of ways. A dog can be fatigued, depressed, wounds aren't healing, limping - the list goes on. A tick panel from Protatek Labs is worth it. They do a 4-panel and give a discount to hounds. It's been 5 years since I did one, against the advice of a vet - and my guy has Rocky Mt Spotted Fever. He was a Florida dog who raced in Iowa. During full on greyhound rescue and adoption in the late 1990's and 2000's, I did them on every dog from a tick infested region.
  8. Again, a topic near and dear to my heart. There are many ways to help with arthritis naturally - and EIGHT is NOT old. 1. Joint Supplements. Whatever you purchase just make sure they are high quality and you give enough. Greyhounds need 1500 mgs of EACH - Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin. Vitamin C to bowel tolerance. 2. Anti-inflammatory. My go-to is YUCCA. 3. Acupuncture 4. Cold Laser 5. Turmeric Golden Paste to name just a few. Essay on Arthritis - Achy, Breaky Joints
  9. ahh topics near and dear to my heart. Adequan shots - are super - but there are many other natural supplements to try too. 1. Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Vitamin C (1500 mgs of EACH daily) Read your labels. Make sure you are giving enough of a high quality product. 2. Yucca - best natural anti-inflammatory I've ever used 3. Acupuncture 4. Cold Laser to name a few Greyhound Gang has used successfully for almost 20 years. Regarding fish oils. check your labels because not all fish oils are created equal. You want a minimum of 5 to 1 - Omega 3 - 6. Too much Omega 6 (which is in kibble) is NOT good. Wild Salmon Oil is in short supply right now because the salmon run was not a good one last year. So prices will be much higher than usual. Pollack Oil is a good substitute. Here is an Essay about Wild Salmon and Organic Coconut Oils with lots of info.
  10. More info and links about helping IBD/IBS here. There are many natural supplements to help, but reducing the inflammation (I like Yucca), and feeding a home cooked or raw meal is key.
  11. Dr Couto - Greyhound Health Initiative is the place to get a second opinion. here is also some neurological info - FCE, Vestibular, Strokes
  12. Definitely go raw for now. It will help with his inflammation (probably an allergy reaction, and rice is not grain free) causing all the diarrhea. Greyhound Gang has tons of articles and links to help. Here is the FOOD one. Here's treating diarrhea naturally. Slippery Elm gel is the way to go. I also like Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes to help. Here's an essay about them. He's lucky to have found such a caring home! Best to you all.
  13. I would not give rice. If she does have an allergy to grains, rice will aggravate. Dogs cannot digest whole vegetables. They need to be pulverized. And they don't need a lot of veggies. Protein is key. funny video about pulverizing veggies for hounds. Additionally, if you have a stressed hound, get some rescue remedy. Stress will also cause diarrhea. Make the GEL with the slippery elm. It will reduce the inflammation of the intestinal lining, which creates the diarrhea.
  14. Have many suggestions - all natural. Arthritis Article here. A few summary suggestions here: - Joint supplements - Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin and C. Read labels. Must be 1500 mgs daily of EACH. - Yucca Intensive - natural anti-inflammatory. Has worked miracles with my hounds. I haven't had to use drugs/NSAIDs for years. - Acupuncture - fabulous - Adequan shots - intensive joint help - Cold Laser - CMO - Grizzly Salmon Oil (3000 mgs daily) & Organic Coconut Oil (1 tbsp daily) To treat incontinence. Works. Inexpensive. Also, change diet from kibble/grains. I rescued a hound on Proin, and within 1 week, she was off it, and doing fine - not one accident - on Kidni Kare. Azmira Kidni Kare
  15. Natural ways to treat diarrhea. I like Slippery Elm Gel the best. However, she may be allergic to processed food (kibble) - in particular the grains - i,e. rice. More info about that here.
  16. Good about joint supplements. re Dasuquin: - Read label and make sure you are giving 1500 - 2000 mgs daily of Glucosamine AND of MSM AND of Chondroitin. That is numerous tablets/capsules to get correct dose. Inflammation will get in the way of the joint supplements doing their best work. So reducing inflammation is important - particularly with older hounds. MSM is a good daily anti-inflammatory, but Yucca is an EXCELLENT, natural anti-inflammatory (without side effects) for acute issues. Re x-pens. I usually take them apart, and move the pieces around as I need them. So if she has a corner bed she likes, then put up pieces of the pen around her, so when she snaps, she only gets as far as the pen panel. Just the regular ones work fine. Don't the other dogs avoid her? If they are not, then watch for instigation. Pack dynamics change as dogs age. My guess is she's always been the one in charge, and others may start vying for her position, and will hurt her, as you are concerned about. If you do muzzle, you can put a piece of lambswool to the top of the muzzle (over the nose area) so there is no rubbing on her nose. Also - we've all moved ourselves to the couch when our hounds can no longer get to our bedrooms. It's just what we do. Congrats on loving her so well that she is truly living longer and healthier than most!
  17. Every dog is an individual in how they react to different foods, homes and lives. Having said that, there are some generalities. Though many things can cause loose stools, these are the top three. 1. Worms (as you discovered) 2. Food 3. Stress Dogs with allergies to certain foods (usually grains, and usually processed food (Kibble), will always have loose stools. Learn more about food allergies at Greyhound Gang/Learn/Food. Sometimes you can add items described by others, but getting to the route of the problem will help for the future. Sometimes giving a kibble/treats withOUT grains will help. Going to raw or cooked foods, almost always helps. Even if just for a while. I like giving digestive enzymes and probiotics also. Plus I keep slippery elm gel in my fridge for flare-ups (particularly good for IBD/IBS issues). It is also normal to have a solid stool first, then looser stools with subsequent ones. But dogs pooping more than once or twice a day, are not digesting their food well, and would indicate to me, that the food is not good for them, and that they may need digestive enzymes to help process their food better. I also like Diatomaceous Earth for natural worming (and flea protection). More information, like this, at my talk at Dewey - Holistic Care for Healthy Hounds. Thursday, Noon. Epworth Church, Rte 1, Rehobeth
  18. I'll be at Dewey, (Epworth Church on Rte 1) giving a talk - When I Am Older. Columbus Day weekend. This and more will be discussed. (Also giving a Holistic Care for Healthy Hounds talk, too) Just like with humans, as we age, our 'quirks' can be exacerbated. Additionally, older age, and aches and pains just make us crabby. We like our space, we like special attention, and we don't often want others around us. Her age, 14.5, is incredible! Truly fabulous that she can still do stairs, though i would caution that with arthritis and vision loss, that is dangerous for her. I would also caution putting that old a hound on drugs to calm her. She's only being herself, just an older version. And at that age she can be whoever she wants to be, and tell off whoever she wants too! But it is our responsibility to protect them from themselves (just like with our aging parents), and the consequences of their actions. Girls usually handle pain better than boys, and she is in pain, and showing it by the snapping. You can modify her behavior by changing up a few things so no one gets hurt. Use an ex-pen to block her from the others. Giving her, her own space where others don't interfere would be helpful, if possible.Muzzling her is an option, though it could be stressful for her. Baby gate her separately when you aren't home. These are small concessions for a life well lived. Acupuncture is fabulous, as is cold laser for aches and pains. Some natural suggestions to help her (none of which are expensive) would be: 1. Joint supplements for arthritis - Glucosamine, MSM, Chondroitin, Vitamin C 2. Yucca - for inflammation - LOVE THIS STUFF! 3. Salmon and Coconut Oils - for skin/coat/digestion and more 4. Aromatherapy - to help with her behavior
  19. Beautiful tribute. Love, for any amount of time, is LOVE. And he left knowing he was loved. We should all be so lucky.
  20. Organic Coconut Oil and Wild Salmon Oil are fantastic for hounds. Seductive Skin article on Greyhound Gang's front page.
  21. Arnica - a homeopathic remedy - is fabulous to give before and after dentals. It helps with the trauma and the bruising. Not expensive either. You can get it at any health food store. Greyhound Gang also carries it with proceeds helping hounds. Hounds have 42 teeth, so she'll do just fine on whatever food she likes. Initially, as suggested, wet the food until her gums heal.
  22. Your perseverance and love were VERY KEY ingredients to his continuing good life with you! The luckiest of dogs find their way to your home.
