  1. Yes, that is my point, he is eating his same food there, but eating 3 times as much as he does at home, not because I don't give him that much at home but because he won't eat it.
  2. Okay, Hi, peeps, it's been a while and here I am when I have a problem So Jeffy's picky eating and mysterious weight loss has continued,we've tested thyroid, numerous parasite checks, changed a million foods, cooked for him, checked for epi etc etc etc He seems otherwise good, healthy, clear eyes and nice and fuzzy, no skin probs, plays with his toys etc. Last week we went to Florida for a vacation and Jeffy went to my mother in laws. He is still there, comes home Wednesday night. I called to ask how he is doing and he has gained 5 lbs. They have a dog and a fenced in acre yard. I feel so bad. Is his weight loss because he isn't happy here??? because he is alone during the day? He doesn't have the usual SA behaviours but when I leave in the mornings I always give him a treat and he often doesnt eat it until I come home at night. In retrospect there have been a few times when he goes outside before I go to work, he wouldn't come back in, I had to get the leash and go get him from the yard. Once in though he would go back to normal, go lay on his bed etc. I love my boy with all my heart and am pretty gutted over thinking his problem may be me PS he is 5 and has been with us for 3 years now.
  3. Love those pics PJ and clearly Wiki was meant to be part of your family, you gave him exactly what he needed - you.
  4. Hmm,interesting. The pet valu store where I buy Jeff's food just started stocking it, I noticed it on my last trip and was wondering 'why coconut oil' but didn't have time to ask and chat. I may have to grab a bottle, Jeffy is a picky/reluctant eater much of the time so I'm willing to give it a shot!
  5. Really? Jeff had giardia, twice, and the vet said it probably came from his rabbit poop snacking in our yard.
  6. Thanks Chad, Gary and his family are great and Jeffy was lucky enough to have a fantastic foster mom too, which is how he ended up living in Canada I hope you are right Beth and he is just pushing his luck
  7. I have a 19/20 year old chinchilla. When I had Stella she completely ignored Oscar and was actualy afraid of him, he would throw himself at the side of his cage if she came to close and she would run away. He is a character and thinks he rules the roost. I was a little worried when Jeff came to join us because there is no way Oscar was going anywhere!! Thankfully, Jeffy does well with the little guy too. He will ocassionally wander over to the cage to try to get chilla poops but once Oscar even got out and hopped right past Jeff's bed and all he did was raise one ear. However even with that, I block off his cage when we aren't home so that Jeffy can't get near it. Just in case. How is the chin reacting to all this, is the dog stressing him/her out? I would say they need to find away to get their chilla in a room they can close off. In one of our apartments I had to keep Oscar in our bedroom, that was a PITA because they are so noisey at night, but it needed to be done.
  8. So usually when I leave in the morning Jeffy runs to the landing and lays there. I give him a treat and head out. Last week he started following me to the garage door. Then trying to follow me through. This morning I thought he wanted out so I took him out first and then he refused to come back inside, I had to go get his leash and bring him in. Nothing has happened, he hasn't been alone more or less than usual, just the normal workday. Nothing has happened in the house to make him more anxious. I am a little worried about this. When I get home he seems fine, no scratches on the doors or stuff, seems like he has been up in his bed. But he doesn't eat the treat till I get home. Any advice to nip this in the bud.
  9. Jeffy, his royal whineness, only whines under very specific circumstances. They include but are not limited to - He is awake and I am not He wants to go to bed and we do not he wants out he wants in it is raining the bathroom door is closed the phone is ringing he wants food the chinchilla is looking at him his bed needs fluffing he wants to play it is within 3 hours of a mealtime he wants a walk the garage door is opening or closing a family member is outside and he is not someone is having a shower I am pretty sure it is all just karma for me making fun of Kari and Passion about her whining (Passion's, not Kari's )
  10. Thanks everyone, 4 hours would cover it at max he likes to eat a couple bits, go do something else, come back later and eat a couple more etc. Now I won't have to be worrying about it all the time (I'll just find something new to worry about )
  11. I am not really worried about spoilage, it is just water and kibble but vaguely thought it was some sort of increased bloat risk, not sure though, so I thought I'd ask.
  12. Yup wet kibble, I wasn't sure why either but keep hearing you can't leave it out. Sometimes a scoop of canned food on top or bits of sweet potato or something.
  13. So my sweet Jeffy is a bit of a PITA about food. He is very thin. When fed he often will eat a bit of his food then stop. If I leave it down he will often go back and eat more later, usually all of it over about 3 trips to the bowl. I won't go into the whole long story but I have been through a bunch of food stuff with him and the 'give him his food for 10 minutes then take it away' doesn't work. It doesnt make him eat, just makes him puke bile a few hours later when he is hungry and he can't afford the weight loss. He doesnt ever overeat so he would be a perfect candidate for free feeding. But he can't eat dry food, it needs to be wet and I've been told you can't leave wet food out. Why is that? How long can it be left out for and be okay for him to eat? If I give him his morning allotment and was able to leave it for him then by mid afternoon it would be gone and his supper allotment would be eaten by bed time. I've tried breaking it into smaller feedings, morning, supper and late evening but no matter he will always only eat part of it then be hungry again later. Oh and hi everyone missed ya
  14. did they check him for giardia? Jeffy lost a bunch of weight we did a fecal and it was negative. Did another one, a 3 day fecal and it came back positive for giardia. that being said Jeffy is now giardia negative and still losing weight or gaining it then losing again, currently he's on tylan powder daily to see if that will help him 'keep' and going in for monthly weight checks.
  15. Allergies? Jeffy gets very itchy in the summer from allergies, the vet said she could give him steroids for it but would rather not unless it gets really bad.
  16. So sorry Diane Mizzy, we will see you later pretty girl.

I wish I could have been one of those people. Love ya chicklet and wish there was something that could be said to make it hurt less
  18. Jeffy had Giardia a few months ago, I was actually glad when he was diagnosed because the unexplained weight loss was really starting to scare me. I did catch him drinking out of a planter that holds water plants the other day, sigh, probably time for another round of Flagyl.
