  1. Wingnut developed a fear of flies this summer sometime. I have no idea what brought it on. He runs around like a crazy hound and then tries to go up and hide in the bedroom. I've even killed them and shown him the carcass and he's never convinced it's really the fly. He's not as bad as your girl, he will eventually forget about it until the next time. I'm hoping by the time spring rolls around he's forgotten about it totally.
  2. I'd say it's about 50/50 with dogs we adopt out on people keeping their names. We pretty much work with the same owners so we usually know what their kennel names are. Sometimes it bums me out when someone changes what I think is an awesome name, but I don't think the dogs really care. I was happy that my friend kept Woot's name. I kept Mimi's name because her foster family had given it to her. Her kennel name was Ring (Flying Ringneck) and they didn't think it suited her. Mimi definately fit her. If I was picking now, I'd probably keep Molly's name Blondie just because I appreciate the humor in a dark brindle girl with Blondie as a name. However, she didn't know it at all and knowing where she came from I doubt she was called much of anything. Rocky's name was Popeye and he knew it. I HATED that name. There was no way we were keeping it. We changed it to Rocky and he only got called Popeye when he wasn't paying attention. Maddy's name is Reuniting and I don't think they ever really called her anything either. We asked the animal communicator what she wanted her name to be and she told her Madeline like Madeline Albright, but Maddy for short. I will say that she does also answer to Madam Secretary, so who knows . RJ came to us as RJ and we kept it. And, there was no way we could change Wingnut's name! Our pre-adopt is Nose Stradamus and goes by Romey or Nosey, depending on who's talking to him. I'm pretty sure we're going to stick with Romey. My friend did adopt a dog named Bankroll. They called him Bankroll at the track. She wanted to change his name to Banks because it was a little shorter. He could NOT figure it out and they ended up going back to Bankroll.
  3. I don't have any articles, but we've found with some of the vets here they have to see it work to get on board. We've mostly found it with the E-Vet and specialists. We've pretty much had to force them to use it a few times, but now they're all converts. I think, it's your dog - if you want to use the Amicar I think they should. It's not like you're wanting to use some new fangled, voodoo medicine
  4. I'd do a vet visit to rule out an obstruction or inflammation if he continues throwing up.
  5. What is the biopsy going to tell you? Is it going to be something that they can fix? I'm not really a big fan of doing a bunch of tests that will stress out / cause pain to a dog, particularly a senior, unless the results will determine a treatment option. If doing it is only going to tell you for sure what it is, then I probably wouldn't do it. If it's because think they will find something they can fix, then I'd probably do it. If the biopsy determines the cause, what will they do for treatment? Is it something they can do without the biopsy? If the only point of the biopsy is knowing for the sake of knowing and not for a "fix", well then I most likely wouldn't put her through it. Maddy recently had some inflamation in her intestine that caused her stop eating. We treated her with fluids, meds and then I switched her to Go Dog Salmon. So far so good.
  6. I had an adopter in an apartment who's dog was having a really hard time when he left for work. He finally found out that they were working on the other apartments in his building, so his dog was hearing talking, banging, hammering, etc. all day while he was gone. Luckily they were almost finished and he could work at home for the rest of the week. Once all the noise stopped the dog was fine. Maybe make sure there isn't anything going on that's causing her stress? I've had others who take a bit to settle into apartments where they can hear and see people coming and going all day. Hope having a buddy that she knows is the solution!
  7. We'd been having the same issues with Maddy. Finally she refused to eat anything, even canned Grammies Pot Pie or cookies. Took her to the vet and she had some inflammation in her belly. They kept her all night on fluids and some meds and now she seems to be eating mostly normally again. Well, as normal as she ever eats. She likes it better when I fix her food than when Kevin does. We did switch her to the Go Dog Salmon since it's supposed to be easy on the stomach and easy to digest. So far so good. And Maddy is the queen of QGRW. Mostly in the form of refusing to walk at random times and places.
  8. So sorry about Sara. She was one of a kind, that's for sure! I know she met up with Hailey, Mimi and Rocky and they're all eating cookies and having a great time.
  9. I'm so sorry, Sorella was such a special girl. I'm going to miss seeing all her pictures and hearing all about her.
  10. Glad he's doing better. Cheryl pronounced his name as Quicks-Rin when we got him in
  11. Sooo cute!!!! Love the fuzzy ones. My friend just adopted this girl from HUA in Nebraska. They sort of look a like and I think are about the same age. Wonder if they're related? http://www.hua.org/adopt-a-friend/homeward-bound/altona.html
  12. Yea! I'm glad the boys made it!! I love the picture of Cinco with the statue. That dog doesn't miss ANYTHING! Seamie will have an excellent trainee postal inspektor! So happy he's sleeping with you. Isn't he the biggest snuggler? Wish I would have had more time to spend with Aiden, but I've only heard good things about him. He spent the 10 minutes he was at my house crashed out on a dog bed like he'd been there forever.
  13. We fed the Turkey & Sweet Potato for over a year with no issues. They just came out with a Beef & Sweet Potato (yellow bag) and we're trying that now just to give them some variety. So far so good. Ours didn't really care for the Salmon one.
  14. I've used Best Value Pet Supplies for years without a problem. Fast shipping and I always get exactly what I ordered. Several friends use them too and no complaints.
  15. I know a couple of people that have had to have plates / screws taken out. None had any issues. One was a girl we adopted out that we didn't even know had a plate and screws until one of the screws started coming through the skin.
  16. I'm very sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful girl.
  17. I'm just now seeing this, I'm so sorry about Joseph He was a special boy, I'll really miss hearing about him.
  18. Oh no Gracie I know you burned so bright you had to go be up in the sky. We're all going to miss you.
  19. Mimi had a bout of vestibular. I'd say it was a good couple of weeks before she was walking steadily on her own and probably a couple of months before the head tilt went away and she was back to normal.
  20. I just had a dental on a 12 yr old and she did fine. I understand cleaning up. I had Mimi until she was 15. The last year was spent constantly cleaning up pee & poop. No matter what we put down she'd find a way to go on the carpet. And, then she'd step in the poop and track it everywhere. There were plenty of days I came home from work and cried when I saw the mess. And, Mimi also kept me up all night after she'd spent all day napping. It was exhausting and plenty of times I was ready to kill her. But, I'd happily spend $1,000 and clean up all the messes again if I could have her back. If I had the money, I'd do a dental.
  21. Jeramie had a prostate infection. Neutered at age 4.5 and got it several months later. A round of antibiotics cleared it up and I don't believe he's had an issue since. Re-exam of his prostate after the antibiotics showed it was back to normal. Hope that's all it is!
  22. He's fairly young, 4.5 years old. He'd been neutered about a month, maybe two before this happened so she was thinking maybe it was an infection related to his neuter, but who knows. She did a physical exam after I brought him back the second time. After the antibiotics, my husband took him back for a recheck and she said his prostate was back to being smooth. I know nothing about boy dog's prostates, so I'm taking her at her word. As soon as he started on the antibiotics the peeing stopped pretty much right away.
  23. Have you has his prostate checked? Jeramie went from being totally housebroken to having accidents, losing weight and being restless / crabby. We took him to the vet and all the tests came back fine. I just had a feeling it wasn't behavioral so took him back in and she found that his prostate was sensitive and not smooth like it should be. 2 weeks of antibiotics and he's been totally fine for the last month. The vet would have been totally fine with saying it was behavioral if I hadn't pushed it. And, this vet is pretty greyhound savvy.
  24. I'd probably start on the Doxy if I was you. Did you adopt from Greyhound Companions? I know they use Barrett Station Vet off of Manchester. You could always talk to the group to see if they have any ideas. Or, I can give you Leann's number w/ Rescued Racers. She keeps all sorts of vet information. It would also be worth it to do a consult w/ OSU and send them her test results so far.
  25. Sorry to hear about your girl! I'm in St. Louis as well. Which vet are you using?
