  1. Can I ask what kennels or where you took him to? Be useful to get a contact of maybe a racing vet or knowledgeable greyhound physio?
  2. That is interesting, struggling to find anything obvious with him. What was the cause if you don't mind me asking? There are no corns on the other feet and when I squeeze pads etc.. no yelping or obvious discomfort.
  3. Yeah, this is what I seem to find strange.. one minute he is sprinting around and playing and then the next minute he looks stiff and with a hobble!? I am reluctant to spend hundreds more on investigations as I don't have much spare at present.. I guess needs must
  4. Hello all, Posted on here previously regarding what I thought was an old injury or lameness on front right leg Dog has such a contrast in behavior when walking etc that I'm not sure what is causing the issue? He had a corn removed via flexor tenotomy on the left front, no issues other than a bad reaction to metacam and 4 nights in vet hospital with a blood transfusion. Other pads are fine. I thought by removing the corn on his front left would solve the issue with the hobble. Unfortunately he still hobbles badly time to time, looking uncomfortable on the right front. Other times he can run flat out and jump around without yelping etc. I can lift the leg and move toes, press shoulder etc without him yelping or any obvious signs of real pain. All I can say is it seems worse in the morning and I notice a lot of downward dog stretches. This has been intermittently happening for the around 8 months. His old race record shows he has had a year off which I assume was a bad injury. Apologies for the novel, just I have spent thousands £s after his bad stint post flexor surgery. Money is tight at the moment and I am trying to avoid spending loads more on investigations. Trying to do the best for the dog but he seems to cause me more stress and anxiety. Sometimes I feel I should have gone for a less sensitive breed 😔. Hoping someone on here has had a similar issue or could shed some light? I have attached two video links for contrast. Many thanks
  5. Dog is 5. May ask about the anti - inflammatory, anything like that before has thrown his stools and stomach.. Proper sensitive stomach, had bad gastroenteritis previously so I am always skeptical. Appreciate the response.
  6. Hi Everyone, Since adopting my dog over a year and a half ago, I have gone through a few health issues. Despite all this he is a proper character and is spritely for a Grey! My first Greyhound so it was quite a learning curve for both of us. My Greyhound had a corn since I got him, its located on the left front leg, inside toe where he has had a nail removed (never grown back). He must of been injured fairly badly as his racing record shows over a year off the track - retiring at 4. This is also evident by a scar at the top of left leg/chest. Long story short, after numerous tries to remove and manage the corn I went down the flexor tenotomy route. Dog had a massive reaction to anesthetic and I nearly lost him, a transfusion and 3 days in emergency care luckily seemed to save him. This flexor scar itself recovered well and corn looks to be reducing (6 weeks post op). He has always intermittently seemed to "limp" or put more weight on the front right, hence my decision to go with surgery thinking the corn on front left was causing the issue. Post surgery he is still seems to bear a bit more weight on the right front leg, this may only be twice on a walk. The best way I could describe it is like a strange gait or slight intermittent hobble? the dog has never lifted the leg itself and will put weight down the whole walk. The dog shows no signs of pain when flexing the leg or moving the wrists/toes/pads etc, he will run and jump around in the house doing the mad 5 minutes, jump in the car.. This is just something I notice occasionally on walk every now and then. I have also recalled seeing it once after a playful running around session, I let him off regular and it wont happen every time. He seems otherwise happy, lively and healthy. He will come on long walks with me and doesn't slow up or ever refuse to walk. I would say I notice it more on the morning walk, although I am not 100% He has been vet checked on multiple occasions and they can't seem to find any obvious signs of pain when doing a physical assessment, obviously all feet have been checked thoroughly for corns and nothing has flagged. The vet I use are well regarded and are the main vet for my local greyhound rescue group. Due to the bad reaction and poor health from the anesthetic previous, I am reluctant to put him under again to investigate this further if not necessary. I have spent every penny I own to keep him alive post op and I am not in a financial situation to spend thousands more. I feel frustrated and at a bit of a loss at what to do? My worry is that I question myself whether he is struggling and I am just being ignorant. Has anyone out there ever had a hound that was previously injured and has just accepted that the dog will always have a distinct hobble or quirk etc.? I am naturally an overthinker anyway , in hindsight I maybe should of chose a more "hardy" breed. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated Many thanks!
  7. Hi All, Had my Male greyhound for a year and a bit now. I would love to get a second, no issue financially or work/house wise.. My issue is the car. I have a work vehicle which I use for private use too, it's a 2020 Toyota Hilux. At the moment my dog goes across the back seat in a hammock, the truck doesn't have a canopy on the back. I can't justify or afford another personal vehicle purely for dog transport. Does anyone have experience of getting two Greyhounds along the back seats? When he stands there doesn't look much room but when hes settled he seems to take up half the space. I guess I could try and get a canopy for the truck bed but then the dog would be out of view. Am I mad for considering this or should I just accept getting a second isn't viable? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
  8. Thanks for the responses. I think the collar is okay as I can fit two fjngers underneath.. I was pulling the lead short to try and get a good view. Interesting about the louder hounds, he just sounds like he is huffing and puffing through the walk. Could you describe what is meant by a noise hound? I was worried about laryngeal paralysis.. I am guessing that would show other symptoms? The noise is similar to that of when he is excited, although this seems more continuous. I have not noticed it when resting at home. The video isn't great, but he will open and close the mouth at a fast rate which creates a heavy breathing/snorting noise. If this isn't normal, then maybe I will get it checked out? His fitness seems good, after a couple of miles he still is keen to continue. Didn't want to make an underlying issue worse.
  9. Ahh yeah, I think the collar is okay as I can get two fingers underneath. It may have been me pulling the lead tight to try and get a video. I have heard that the martingale collars are better!? Interesting, he seems to breathe heavy through the mouth which creates a snorting sound.. I don't really notice anything at home. I was worried about Laryngeal paralysis? Guessing that would show more symptoms?..
  10. Hi All, I have a 5 year old ex racer, owned him coming up to nearly a year. The dog is quite fit and excitable (for a greyhound) walking at least an hour daily with weekend field runs. I have noticed that he sounds a little like a steam train at times when out on walks, not so much panting but will seem to just breathe just through the mouth. I have noticed he will open and close his bottom jaw quickly which sometimes results in an almost snorting sound. A noise like if you were to quickly inhale with your mouth open and not through the nose... His jaw does vibrate at times when doing this, but not always. The dog has recently been vaccinated for Kennel cough, not sure how long it has been happening or I have only just started to notice. I cant work out whether I just have a real excitable hound who is enjoying being outside or whether this is an underlying issue such as early LP? if anybody has experienced something similar or has a noisy hound when out and about please let me know. Obviously I don't want an unnecessary sedation and vet visit. I have not noticed anything like this when inside the house, just when out walking outside. The dog doesn't pant excessively when back home. Dog eats and drinks well, otherwise seems to be a happy chap. Always had dogs but I am a first time hound owner and have slowly come to realise these dogs have different "traits" to other breeds. I am a worrier anyway which doesn't help. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hello, I have had my retired racer for approx 7 months now. He is a 4 year old male. It has been great watching him come out of his shell in the last 3 months. After doing lots of research I felt a greyhound would be well suited to my lifestyle. He doesn't have SA when left when I am at work and is almost the "perfect dog". My issue is that he still feels very much aloof, wanting not much more than to sleep and eat. Although affectionate at times, I feel as if he would wonder off with anyone happily. Training has been slow and he can be real stubborn at times. Having been around dogs at home and work most of my life, I am starting to wonder whether I made the right choice. The calm gentle nature is what made me choose a greyhound but at times it feels as if I don't even have a dog in the house. Can anyone share any training/bonding tips which could help make the dog feel more like a companion? I am well aware it's only been a short time and that it is a big transition. The dog does get plenty of exercise and socialisation. Thanks for reading.
  12. Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated. I ended up going to the vets, they said the right eye in particular was inflamed. I was given drops for 5 days. Redness has now reduced. The vet didn't mention the third eyelids, I am a little concerned still as they are just visible in the corners of both eyes. I haven't found much on the Web referring to this as normal.. Other than the few replies. Anybody have any photos with the same issue/trait? I'm a natural worrier, probably stressing about nothing 😂.
  13. Hi Everyone, I am new to the whole greyhound ownership.. Slowly but surely working out all their sensitive traits. So far it's been an enjoyable experience, can see how the greyhound addiction starts. I have a black ex racing male, I have noticed he has a small amount of "gunk", sometimes dry in the inside corner of the eyes. Other than this his eyes don't seem to be swollen/really red. I have also noticed at times a small part of the third eyelid will show (I thought this shouldn't happen unless asleep). I have attached a photo of this eyelid but doesn't do much justice. Can anyone shed some light or previous experience on this. Be good to know if this is just "normal". Thanks
