  1. For the last few weeks I have been taking Mira out with a scooter. She loves the faster pace. I have to be careful though because every so often she will just stop. “I need to go potty” or “I just want to sniff here NOW”. Gotta be on my toes to hop off real quick! We also did a FastCAT last month and she absolutely LOVED it. As soon as she saw the lure from across the field she started to go nuts. She would’ve chased that lure all day if we let her. It was our first time doing it and she made the AKC top 8 of 2021 and top 15 lifetime fastest greyhounds. (Slatex Kamara) Just thought I’d share the fun things 😁
  2. Were these nicks caused by the stairs themselves?
  3. I’m sorry for the confusion, I was referring to her dew claws on her front legs causing the cuts on her back legs while running. Mira does not have dew claws on her rear legs. It would be a good thing to eliminate as you suggested. I’ll vet wrap ONLY the dew claw for her outings and see if that decreases the frequency of cuts for now.
  4. I understand cuts on the hind legs after running to be a common experience and I have always sprayed the small wounds with a bit of doggy antiseptic and threw on some Kwikstop and Mira is is good to go. Beginning of last week Mira was doing one of her 2+ daily zoomies outside and when I went to wipe off her paws she had a fairly bad cut under her carpal pad. It must have been painful too as she would hardly let me touch her leg or paw at all (highly unusual), she kept yelping. So I managed to spray the antiseptic as usual and got a quick dab of kwikstop on there and the bleeding stopped. She favored it the rest of the day and by the next morning she was good to go. We didn't let her zoomie all day the next day and she has been fine ever since, back to normal I can touch the carpal pad directly without a negative response and she has done MANY zoomies without re-injury since. That injury and all the pervious small ones have made me wonder if there is a solution. My "complaint" (if you would call it that) or more worry I suppose is that one of these cuts will be that bad again, or worse. I have heard (on this forum and elsewhere around the web) that vet wrap works well and I intend to use it for outings with a lot of expected running, this is not a solution for zoomies multiple times a day in the backyard though. Is there any way to prevent these cuts? Some sort of reusable ace bandage sleeve? Are the cuts on the back legs caused by the dew claw? Should I try and cut the dew claw even shorter? What is a proper length of it (If that is the culprit). In my head I imagine a compression sleeve similar to an Under Armour type material (maybe a bit thicker) that I can slide on her legs real quick and let her run around the back yard. Machine washable would be ideal too. Anyone else have any ideas. I assume I will have to make this product as my short google search didn't yield what I was looking for. (Responses such as "There is no way to prevent these cuts, just keep doing what your doing" do not aid in the conversation. I obviously know this is an inevitable fact of owning a greyhound and I am more than prepared to continue doing this indefinitely. The goal is to find a solution, or better way for all of us. Thank you.)
  5. Thank you for your responses. I was way over thinking it!
  6. Hi all! Excited new owner of a retired racer Slatex Kamara, but we call her Mira (like Mira Mira on the wall who’s the fairest of them all ). She’s 3 years old raced 34 races and I can tell she loved it! She picked up fetch pretty quick and absolutely loves running flat out. I started researching lure coursing and came across some AKC FastCAT events in my local area (Memphis, TN) and I think she would have a blast doing that! So, the reason for my post. I haven’t been able to find any coursing events not requiring the AKC reg. or just a get together (with the lure set up). A get together would be ideal as I don’t really want her to “compete” per se but just chase the lure and have fun. The local events all require AKC registration , I looked up a PAL registration and it seems easy enough only caveat is... they ask what adoption agency did you adopt from? So I’ll have to put that. And why I want a PAL registration. So I’ll have to put that. On the adoption contract it states “this greyhound will be kept solely and exclusively as a pet, and will not be used for racing, breeding, hunting or laboratory experiments.” I’m not sure if FastCAT counts as “racing”. So, I’m going to call the adoption agency and see if fastCAST is specifically off limits. If they say it’s alright, I’ll get the AKC PAL registration and enroll her in the local fastCAT. Case closed. I’m wondering what options I have if they say no to FastCAT? Does anyone know any local lure coursing events Memphis, TN (or Virginia Beach, VA. I’m moving in July)? Any other activities that can be found locally(not looking to drive more than an hour)? Again, I’m not looking for her to compete and do not plan on making this a super frequent thing. Just a little fun every now and again when time affords. Thanks all, and glad to be here!
