  1. I would agree, she does not exhibit separation anxiety to me. If she was able to go potty more often I believe she would not be going inside. Unfortunately I can’t get her 2 steps beyond the door except when after she wakes up in the morning. I’ve tried taking her out after her morning meal and given her a lot of time to ease into getting moving, but she won’t budge and then we go back inside. That’s why the medication route was suggested I think, though it’s something I’ve tried to avoid.

  2. Hi thank you very much for your reply. Her name is Rea and she will be 5 in November. She is on leash in the yard because I don’t have a fence. I contacted my adoption group who advised I should contact my vet for medication options at this point, so that is why we are starting on Reconcile. I try to take her out multiple times a day but she won’t budge. In the morning when she wakes up, she goes right out.

  3. I adopted my greyhound in August (a little over a month ago). She has been fearful from the beginning, but now will not go outside unless she absolutely has to go to the bathroom. The past week, that has been only in the mornings (pee and poop). She will exit the door and turn around to come back in. I have tried to push her to get her to move to get further into my yard (unfenced) to go to the bathroom, but I am unable to get her to move. I've tried many methods (waiting her out, treats, etc.). I live alone, so I am not strong enough by myself to carry her to get her outside to go potty. I have been trying to de-condition her, but she is not responsive to food. She is crated when I am away from the house. She is not vocal at all (or displaying other signs of anxiety) when left alone, but she has starting peeing and pooping in the crate. I'm thinking this is because she is not going enough outside, it could be anxiety, but I have a feeling if she had more regular potty breaks to relieve herself she would not be relieving herself in the crate. I'm hesitant to leave her uncrated when I know she will not have gone potty for a while by the time I get home and will likely go inside. I come home for lunch, so normally she would be getting a potty break every 4 hours if she would go.

She is supposed to start Reconcile tomorrow to help with her outdoor anxiety, but I'm not sure what to do in the mean time to get her to outside to go potty more often? Since Reconcile can take 4-6 weeks to take effect. She is terrified of the car, so driving her to another location to do her business is not feasible. I don't want her to build the habit of going in the crate. She also needs to relieve herself more often for health reasons, it's not good for her to hold it so long and I know she's uncomfortable. I'm at a loss and at this point wondering if I am the best fit for her to get her where she needs to be. She is a very gentle good dog indoors (she is not timid indoors, she will lay with me and hang out with me), but outside she is scared of everything.

  4. Hi, I adopted my new greyhound Rea last Saturday. Good news, she's great inside the house and has been immediately great being left alone (which I anticipated as being the biggest growing pain with her new environment).

Bad news, and I realize it's only been a week, and she is still setting in, but the problem we are having is when it's time to go outside. She is very anxious outside, she notices every noise, and hardly sniffs anything. I don't have a fenced yard and I'm in an apartment(duplex house). I take her on leash into our large un-fenced backyard, but she will keep looking back at the house anxious to go back. Once we make it back far enough into the backyard, she will walk around for a minute but then will want to go back inside. When she has to go potty bad enough, she seems to only go potty in that area in the morning. I've managed to also get her to alternate with another plot of grass in front of my apartment, which she has favored in the afternoon/evenings. But with her anxiety, I feel like she's holding back when she needs to go potty. I tried to take her on a shorter walk, thinking she might need to walk a little to go potty, but she is always looking for how to find her way back inside. This past Saturday, she went pee at 4pm and then the next time was at 8am the next day. I took her out 3 different times Saturday night to try to go potty, but she seemed too anxious to focus on going to the bathroom. Today, the last time she went pee was 7am, and it is now 5pm. She has not yet had any accidents inside. She is not food motivated, I've tried hi-level treats, even warming up chicken for a few seconds in the microwave to get more of a smell to distract her, and she ignores them.

Are there any insights on how to get her more comfortable with being outside and wanting to go to the bathroom? Unfortunately, I don't have any dogs around to take her on a walk with to help her feel more safe. I've looked into Adaptil Collars, but I'm not sure how effective they would be. I could try to focus on just having her in the backyard to go potty to go more slowly in building her confidence, but she seems to only go potty there in the morning. I realize I'm going to have to take things very slow, as this is her first time in a home environment after being off the track. I'm just concerned she's going to start peeing/pooping in her crate if she doesn't relieve herself more regularly, and I also worry about her being uncomfortable trying to hold it for so long. Thank you in advance for any feedback.

  5. Hi everyone thank you so much for all your responses. We have been stuck under snow so weren't able to get to the vet yesterday. But last night she did a lot better when she went outside and didn't cry as badly. We took it very slow with harness supporting her back legs. No biting but a little bit almost impatient whining because she couldn't go at her own pace. When she squatting to go there was whining so there definitely is still pain, and she can't walk without us supporting her in the harness. But when she came back in and laid back in her bed, we had left some treats on the floor. She sat up and actually got up out of her bed to get them and walked around the room (carpeted) without the harness with no crying for about 30 seconds. It seems like some of her crying might be related to a lot of anxiety she has about her injury and moving? She seems to be improving for the moment,  and she is still experiencing pain after a week, but since she walked around last night without crying might it be something that just needs time to heal?

  6. Hello, new to this forum, looking for some advice. I have a 5 year old female retired racer. She was jumping last Saturday 1/23 on leash in the snow, nothing crazy. But she landed on her feet and suddenly was screaming and limping on her back right leg. I thought maybe she had stepped on something in the snow. She came inside the house limping and still screaming. She finally calmed down and lied down in her bed and seemed to be doing okay. I took her out later than night for potty and she walked down the outside stairs ok (she did a stretch and whimpered a little when stretching her back legs) and seemed on the mend. But on Sunday, when she woke up she was a lot worse and could not stand up with out screaming in pain or walk. I took her to the vet that day, but the X-ray showed nothing abnormal (broken bones, fractures, cancer signs), so they think it is a soft tissue injury. They gave her gabapentin and carbuprofen to go home with with instructions her only activity for the next 14 days is potty and she needs to be on bed rest to help heal.

She has been on strict bed rest, only getting up for potty breaks. I have been using a harness to keep weight off her back legs for more support. She cannot walk without it. After two days she was still in pain and not walking well, so they gave her a 72 hour fentanyl patch on Tuesday 1/26 for stronger pain relief. That seemed to help a lot, but it may have been masking the pain, as today it seemed like the fentanyl was fully out of her system because she did not want to walk on her back leg and screaming and was limping when walking outside for the brief time she made it out there. Every time she gets up she is yelping in pain and when walking. She does not even want to get up to go potty even though she knows she need to go and is uncomfortable.  The vet said to take her back in for re-evaluation if she was not better in 3-5 days. She seemed to be getting better up until yesterday, but I'm afraid it was just the fentanyl masking her pain. As a side note, she is a vocal dog in general if you push her wrong on accident on the couch, but she is definitely in pain, though a small portion might be her anxiety. I'm planning on taking her back to the vet in the morning.

Does anyone have any suggestions on if this sounds like a soft tissue injury or something else? Might an ultrasound help pin point what is wrong? I'm afraid that it might be something more serious that might require surgery and I am hurting her by waiting too long. Many thanks.
