  1. Hugs to you and your family it is no fun dealing with this level of SA. Some questions how does she do in the crate? Did she have to much freedom at home before she figured out what to do? I am in the US so it is different how we bring home greyhounds, we are encouraged to use a crate for a transition time to get the dogs used to a home environment. Mabybe ask your vet behaviorist about using the crate for alone training. Where you can be at home but out of sight and build on time. Since you gave the first behaviorist a try and it did not work maybe try the second one and see if you get a different response. Again hugs you are not alone, if you search for SA here you will find lots of information. Also search alone training there is a book that you will find recommended there too. Not sure of the name off the top of my head it is listed in a bunch of the threads. Others with more experience in this area will respond too. Any chance you could borrow another greyhound and see if having another well adjusted gh would make any difference to her? Some just need a friend too. Since she sounds so different from what they and you were expecting…..
  2. Timmy who, oh he is on vacation. I am napping now go somewhere else please…..
  3. I had a brindle greyhound that had a small patch of corse hair/dry skin. I put vitamin E on it and it went away after regularly being treated. I also looked for foods with vitamin E higher up on the list of ingredients. I never supplemented with is so not sure of the proper amount. Topically it worked wonders maybe find a shampoo with it. Lots of brushing using a dandy brush or finishing brush. It helps distribute there skins natural oils.
  4. Congratulations on your first year. Sounds like you both are doing well. This is why it is so important to not rush them when the statute on walks and take a few steps back to just hanging out. Just give them the time to adjust to all the new sounds and sights no need for long walks while they figure out there new homes. You will be amazed at what happens in this next year when you look back. Enjoy the journey with Apollo
  5. Can you use a new word “snuggles” (make up your own word) and get her to come to you first and give her some attention then give him some? Then later on when you say snuggles she has a choice to come or not. Hence not using whatever work you use for a recall. As they get settled in and figure out there is enough attention for everyone this should get better if they all feel secure and know what to expect in the group.
  6. Just my 2 cents: I had two females that each one thought they were in charge. It came down to management one was a street dog was the original dog and a greyhound who was a big winner and was a favorite at her kennel or so the story went. As long as the sd got attention first everything was fine (food, treats, greeted, let in/out). If the order was upset there would be trouble between the two. So might try to enforce a pecking order. Just so they feel safe in there place in the house. Might try talking to your gh first then her male dog. Or rotate the time they have with everyone, so they all get some people time to them selves. With the rest in another area. Best wishes for one big happy group.
  7. Journey just has “staff”. I get paid in kissy licks. Some times things get taken to her favorite bed. Most just left under furniture. Does Cara give lessons?
  8. Not familiar with the book so can not offer help with that. Can offer suggestion on how to move forward take all the tools that you have learned and now work on adding time S L O W L Y. Think of it as building blocks and the book taught you how to lay the foundation and do the first three floors additional floors would be done the same way with no limit. Same for training you just build with the tools you have that work and increase time. With more practice 20+ will be just as good as 10 just need to use the building blocks from the book and expand on time.
  9. Welcome to GT! You will get lots of good information here and plenty of things to look up and read. First good for you for not using that trainer. Greyhounds need positive training methods. For some they shut down with harsh tones or to hard a correction. The first bit of time with your new gh is sometimes referred to as the honeymoon meaning she will walk where you take her and be on good behavior. She is more or less just following the leash. Oblivious to what is going on as she starts to settle in and become aware of her surroundings she become overwhelmed and sometimes scared of all the new sights and sounds. No need for walks just hang out in the yard or outside the house. Let her get used to the sights and sounds. Remember her whole world has changed. Keep in mind too that they have a highly scheduled routine that does not vary much and there is safety in that routine. So the more predictable there day the better. So take a deep breath and breathe in and out slowly for a little while. Grab a towel or soft brush bring her to you and just brush her and get to know her. Take this same towel or soft brush with her on a leash outside the house. If she will not walk out the door stay behind her and give her a gentle nudge or toss a yummy treat/toy just out of reach. If the dog does not feel you are in control (the leader) or not going to protect them, then they will start protecting you or being in charge. Think of it as the tough teen years she is trying to make the world hers since she does not believe it is yours. I say this because I think you are so overwhelmed and nervous. If she is able to control your actions. Does you adoption group have a behaviorist they recommend or someone in the group that could help you build your confidence that could give you pointers and bring there well adjusted dog so you could do gh group walks? I think time and patience will make a huge difference for you. These dogs change so much the longer they are in your home. Keep working on bonding and stay in the yard, driveway and give her time. As she trust you will see some of this go away. You can use Nothing in life is free training to help with the bonding. Start with any behavior she will do that she learned in class. You can do a search for it on GT. https://gpa-az.com/gilley.html I am sure you will get lots of help from others. Search statue and new greyhound lots of good information will pop up. Where are you located someone may have a behaviorist/ greyhound walk info if we know where you are located city or country.
  10. Congratulations and welcome to GT. 1. Wonder if the sky at night is different from where he came from. Only thing I can think of is when I was on vacation in Alaska the night sky was not at all like what night sky’s at home are. Otherwise I got nothing on this one. 2. All my greyhounds have been retired racers, they have there own style of greyhound games/play when I have gotten them. Most involve race track races, or touch ( some times nicely sometimes more like light tackle ). Some learn other dog style play from being with other dogs some never do. One of my fosters went to dog day care they sent me a video of greyhound being the referee it was so cute looked like she was chastising them for not playing greyhound games. 3. This might still be settling in issues as he feels more confident and settled in he may relax and see that everyone gets some. For now try to keep them separate for food and treats. As far as growling when someone walks by if you can do this while the other dog is in a different area. You could have people toss a piece of kibble/treat as they go by so that it becomes a good thing. 4. If you have a crate or area to contain him start by feeding him in there/ or a Kong treat close the door of crate. While he eats it with you in the room then open the door. When I bring home a greyhound they have a crate. Get a tour of the house and yard then spend some time in the crate, then spend time outside the crate on a leash so they follow me and I can keep an eye on them. If I am doing something that I can not watch them they go into the crate. I find this helps get them used to the home and the crate as I am in the house and always come back to them. When I leave the house they hardly notice as it has just become normal for them to spend time on there own. Hope this helps The following from room to room should get better as he settles in and gets more confident. I did have a pair of greyhound that followed me around so it was not uncommon to have two greyhound in the bathroom with me or waiting. Most would come check to see where I am then go to there bed. Without the whining. Hope this helps some, they just need lots of patience as they get used to a home environment from a racing highly structured environment. The more predictable structure you can provide the faster they will settle in. As there is no surprise to how a day goes for them. They are all the same with a few exceptions transports day and race day. Even these have a pattern.
  11. He is just overwhelmed with his new life and is taking it all in. The more you can just hang out with him outside and not really go anywhere the more he will get used to the sights and sounds. If you do not have access to the outside (deck, balcony, garden or yard) even having the windows open for a while will help. It just takes time for them to get used to things. So for now just out for bathroom and no real walks is ok. If you look up freezing on walks there will be a bunch of different methods you can try. Never taught stairs so others will have to help with that. Congratulation on your new hound
  12. The silence is so hard to get used too. Hugs and warm thoughts for you.
  13. Then I am sure you can find the perfect greyhound to fit your needs. Best wishes in your search. Please let us know how it works out.
  14. Just my two cents: I think there are to many variables for one answer. So much depends on what you want/need the dog to do for you. The personality of the dog. If you need physical help you may find a small population of greyhounds with the inner lab quality that might do the job. Although service dog trainers lean to other breads with more stamina for 24/7 needs. Now if you are looking for more emotional support needs less constant physical (fetch, guide me …) there would be more options to try. You would also have to look at what you are asking the dogs to do and for how long. They maybe good for a couple of long days but remember they are sprinters and need some down time to recharge. As for the cats and small animals, so much of that depends on the dog personality. I have had several therapy dogs that could care less when on leash. Once off leash in fenced yard would hunt and kill bunnies. On leash would let the domestic bunnies cuddle them. Good luck with your search for a service dog. There are so many variables to consider and no blanket answers.
  15. Thanks for the ideas. I will try my hand at a snuffle mat. We went to the pet store today no snuffle mats or lick mats at the location I was at they had the Kong Wobbler. I set it down for her to look at and barely touched it, it moved ever so slightly and she could not get away fast enough. So I think I might be a long way away from her playing with toys. We will try with what we have maybe a little peanut butter on the outside of the treat ball. Will work on some confidence builders with her too. I did set some junk mail out for her and she would rather steal it than have it given to her. Here is to hoping we can get out some this week before the heat comes back. Thanks for your suggestions we will keep trying different toys and love her where she is at. She is so sweet just a very young 4 year old. I will look at it as she is just helping me keep things picked up. Good thing for me she knows drop it and leave it and so far has been reliable. She gets traded for whatever she gives up she does not always think it was a fair trade. Good thing brisket makes everything better.
  16. She will not touch the nylabone she has several around the house. She is the daintiest of chewers always makes tiny bits of her food or chews or paper shreds. Wonder if she just likes to shred things. So far all her stuffed toys are intact and look me except for drool spots. I should try frozen broth she liked the ice cubes for a minute then left it on her bed. Not sure what the snuffle mat is. Lol have not been in a real store for years. So I helped with the cardboard box I opened 3 of the 4 sides and she picked the busy bone out and left the other treats. Maybe I am asking to much from her. time4Anap she has a treat ball kind of like that again maybe I am asking to much from her to fast. The cat has a wobble toy I will see if she will play with that. Journey does not really even play with her Kong. She will chase and grab a stuffie does not help the foot. Anyone have experience with a lick mat that might be more her speed. I will have to make her a mailbox she can steel junk mail from. Hopefully it will be cooler this week. Will see how she does at the pet store tomorrow might have to be an all morning adventure. She just might not be a player and that is ok. Will just have to find indoor places to go.
  17. Really depends on your dog, I used to feed a freeze dried diet until one of mine could not keep weight on. Vet said to go back to a brand that had been around for a long time. Switched to Purina have fed several different formulas, the ones that worked best for us was the One sensitive stomach salmon, Proplan Sport all the 27-30 protein have done well on depends on the activity level and age of the dog. Others like the green bag of Iams, foster group feed a food I do not remember the brand came in chicken or lamb. Chicken was fine, lamb gave room clearing gas.
  18. Indoor self play ideas for the play challenged greyhound. Journey is just learning to play so far it is more carry it back to my bed/hiding spot. Anyone have ideas for a play challenged gh on house confinement due to a hurt paw and it is to hot for walks and to early in healing for play in the yard. With a caretaker recovering from medical issues. She has chew toys, stuffies, that get taken back to her bed/hiding spot. She loves her busy bones gets them a few times a week. She has treat balls but has not really been impressed with them. (she is a little timid of things that fall or move and make noise) we are working on it. She has treats hidden around the house she knows where they are just not interested to get them. (Cat might of spooked her when she was getting one) Her new game is steel and chew the mail. If it is junk mail I have no problem with it. She likes my mail that I need so not a big fan of the game. So I took a cardboard box put peanut butter on the corners and busy bone and treats in it. She licked the peanut butter off the corners and left the box. Am I starting with to hard of puzzle games or is she just not interested?
  19. She decided three am is better oh lucky me just snack bites with breaks in between. The things we do for
  20. If you live somewhere with all the heat and humidity. The picking at breakfast may be related to the weather. Journey will wait to eat most of her dinner until just before bed when it is a little nicer outside. Even though she spends most of her day in the air conditioning. Has he had a stool sample checked recently? If he is positive that can effect there eating too. I would just watch for a few days and if still concerned check with the vet or drop off a sample.
  21. What a sweet picture of sibling 💗 or tolerance. She looks like a very nice addition.
  22. Congratulations to both of you! Shared greyhounds/pets are the best. Always good to have someone they know who will take them at a drop of a hat and enjoy and love them. Glad she got her and you get visiting/overnight fun.
