  1. She is briefly in the grass to use the potty but we are mostly on sidewalks. If it continues, I will mention the issue to the vet. Thank you!
  2. Our grey is a retired racer and will be 6 in August. We have been jogging with her about twice a week about 1-1.5 miles and she does very well and seems to enjoy it. We also walk her on off days. I notice after our exercises that she chews with the side of her jaw on what would be her ankle joints. She doesnt leave any marks or wounds but she will chew both. Sometimes Ill notice a little limp at the end of the run but she recovers very quickly. Its a very leisurely run, more of a trot for her. Behavioral or arthritis?
  3. Yes we can try that!! Maybe the initial walk in makes her nervous.
  4. Dried beef lungs or soft food frozen in a Kong. She goes crazy!
  5. So THANKFULLY nothing ever came from our sweet grey nipping the maintenance man (some context he came in our home unannounced looking for another gentleman who was working on our furnace). BUT we did notice Paisley now has some aggression/fear/anxiety towards new men she is meeting. For instance, a little uneasy around my dad but settles down after about 15 min but does not care for my sisters new boyfriend. Although, I think my sisters new BF is more scared of her than she is of him. Very timid, nice guy. Not a large man at all. When these guys enter the house, I make sure to answer the door (no doorbell or knocking), greet them warmly, and my husband has Paisley to make sure she doesnt lunge. Paisley initially will bark and sometimes her hackles come up. My husband will firmly pull her back to show thats not OK with these guys. After Paisley settles we then have my dad or sisters BF give her treats to show they are friendly. Whenever the BF enters or exits the room or even goes to bathroom and comes back, she growls and barks. We then crated her and she did fine and slept. Uhhhh help! We dont want her to feel this uneasy when we have visitors over. Especially those who are welcome visitors! Any tips??
  6. The maintenance guy was young and quite dirty so Im hoping he wouldnt be the type that would report it. How quickly could we expect to hear from ACO if the man did go to get care? He said he was okay? Im hoping it was just a pinch to his thigh.
  7. Paisley does great with company! This was the first incidence where she showed any type of aggression towards someone. The vet and all the techs there absolutely love her because shes so gentle. Weve had many people at the house and they think shes a delight! Im not sure if the skin was broken. He said he was fine? In previous maintenance visits theyve always been crated but this time was unexpected and I was sleeping when they were ringing at the door.
  8. Yes after the men left and I had time to think about it. I think Paisley did sense something weird and was probably being protective as my husband is at work, I was caught off guard and alone in the house with two maintenance men. Happy to hear that her behavior was ok and perhaps even appropriately protective of her new family! Needless to say, we are going to try to buy a house this spring so that we dont have to deal with all these apartment issues anymore.
  9. So my husband and I live in an apartment and we had pipes freeze and our water heater went out. While I was off work today, two maintenance men unexpectedly, without appt came to the apartment to pick up the supplies they left. Normally Im at work and the dogs are crated. I opened the door for the first man and had Paisley put into her crate. The second man barged right in like 5 minutes later and I was trying to make sure the Yorkie wouldnt scoot out the door and to contain Paisley. Paisleys hackles went up and she lunges at the man and nipped? Bit? his thigh. He said was okay but obviously I felt terrible. Then I thought how creepy it was that he just waltzed right in, asking if the other guy was still here. Headed to our bedroom, I had to redirect him to the water heater. Creepy. Didnt realize Paisley could be such a guard dog?? But concerned obviously that she lunged at this man. Whenever they come to our house, the dogs are always in the crates but today I was off so the routine was different. Help please! Concerned but also greatful shes looking out for the house? Ahh idk
  10. She hasnt had any sleep startle thus far because I did read that can be a possibility with the greys. And her and my Yorkie are doing better than I even anticipated. They even bed swap in the evening. Its quite adorable. Thank you!
  11. Yes we have room! My husband and I are talking about reconfiguring a corner of the bedroom for her so that our dogs can be safe but she can be cozy in the bedroom. We have a gate that we can section off. Thank you for the ideas
  12. I am back again lots of questions have come up with this new pup and so appreciative of the forums advice. At what point is a good time to have our greyhound sleeping on the floor in our bedroom and out of the crate?? She settles very nicely at night on this mat in the bedroom and looks quite content. Then when its time for her to go back in crate, shes very reluctant but ends up going in without too much resistance. We have a Yorkie that sleeps in the bedroom either in the closet (he likes sleeping under my husbands hanging work shirts) or in our bed. Im obviously hesitant because while we would be sleeping, the dogs would be unsupervised in the bedroom and Id be worried about the Yorkie disturbing the greyhounds sleep and a worst case scenario would be someone getting hurt. Our goal is to have the greyhound sleep in the bedroom. Ive read online that dogs like sleeping with their pack and Paisley is very naturally coming to the room at night to settle down for bed. Weve had her 3 weeks. Im thinking 2-3 months?? Any thoughts?
  13. Thank you both for that info!! Our kennel warned against ever letting her off leash but theres a local horse arena thats enclosed that we could take her to. We have an apartment so it is a tighter space, about 1500 sq feet so not terrible. She seems quite content after a decently long walk and sleeps about 60%-75% of the day. Will try some zoomies in the horse arena and see if she has an interest or not. Thank you! Happy almost New Year!
  14. Hello! Ive really appreciated the feedback for our new Grey in this forum so Im back for more advice. Weve had Paisley about 2 weeks now and things are going pretty smoothly. Shes getting about 1-2 walks a day for about 20-30 min each. Sometimes a bit longer if its the only walk of the day. Ive read weekly sprints are good as well. Any input or suggestions on exercise routines that have worked for you? Obviously frequent walks are a must with any dogs but wondering about the frequency/necessity of sprints for a retired racer. Thank you!
  15. Thank you all! Thats what I figured as well. A solid foundation of ground rules is best to get in place first! Will try the toys in a month or two, maybe longer.
  16. Recently got our first greyhound, whos 5. We have had her a week. We currently have 10 lb Yorkie, whos also 5. Obviously our new Grey, Paisley, has a low prey drive. Paisley has been trying to play with our Yorkie by bouncing around with her bottom in the air and twirling with tail wagging. Our Yorkie doesnt understand that play yet and I think still intimidated. We briefly introduced a soft toy and our grey initially didnt show interest. On second introduction on another day the grey was playing with plush toy, not allowing Yorkie to play too. Ended up taking toy to back of crate and was resource guarding against Yorkie. But let me take toy away as I became uncomfortable with situation. Probably too early to introduce toys. Our Yorkie loves plush toys. The Yorkie is more toy driven then food driven. Any suggestions? Anyone else had similar situations? Would separate play times be smart for the time being?? Not trying to encourage any fights or guarding.
  17. Thank you! So fascinating! Your information is greatly appreciated and really helps us understanding her career and athleticism!
  18. Correction Winta Hightower birthday is 8/26/2013. Thank you!
  19. Hello! We have a new greyhound, retired racer. Winta Hightower, F, 8/23/2013. Former Race Owner Steve Sarras I know she raced in 99 races but would love some interpretation to her results as we are new to looking at the racing charts. Thank you
  20. Crisis averted! She pooped! My sister took her on a long walk today and that did the trick! Thanks all!
  21. Thank you all! That makes me feel better. My husband and I are in healthcare and of course we assume the worst. Lol
  22. We just got our Greyhound sweetie on Saturday. Shes 5 years old and a retired racer. She hasnt pooped since Saturday evening at about 7PM, it is Monday evening 10PM now. She has peed regularly outside on a leash but hasnt pooped. We have tried with her coat on, with it off. We have tried taking her with our other dog and taking her alone. We take her about every 2-3 hours like our other dog. We have tried taking her on a few walks to push it out. Shes drinking normal amount of water, acting normally and even ate nearly all her food today. Pretty good for day 3 but worried about the no poop thing! She is in heat but I thought she may have the opposite effect. When should I contact a vet?? Any suggestions?
