Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. Hi, sorry I havent updated. Theres been a big improvement to date so the X-rays have been postponed until next Wednesday, but now booked in with a bone specialist. Hes weight bearing but still not perfect, enthusiastic for walks and eating well so Im happy to wait a bit longer. Hes insured but because of his age I have to pay 20% of cost and Im not rolling in cash unfortunately. I think X-rays will still be needed but as he seems happy Im using self care (especially on his pads as hes had numerous issues previously) and rest until next week. Will keep you posted.
  2. Interestingly I was inspecting his pads again in more detail today and one has what looks like a small line in it, I was only touching lightly and he reacted. The vet said the pads were ok and that it seemed there was more reaction up the leg. Im going to try Epsom salt soaks today as I normally do with the numerous pad issues we seem to have encountered. Is it possible that something could have slowly worked its way in on a walk hence no noticeable reaction on a walk but come up lame the next day?
  3. Hes obviously resting today, Ive noticed whilst he has been roaching that whilst hed normally stretch both front legs out straight in the air hes keeping the sore one bent, maybe muscular (she says hopefully)
  4. Thanks, hes more active today but still holding the paw up and hopping primarily, would I expect to see some swelling up the leg if it were bone cancer? There doesnt appear to be any noticeable swelling?
  5. I know this is a common question, Ive read lots of the posts already, would just like to get some info from people that know much more than me. Zoopy is 9, has had a few paw issues over the last couple of years but all easily resolved, today however was different. Walked him yesterday as normal, all good apart from I did notice a very slight limp on his last walk so cut it short just in case. Check pads when home, all seemed ok. This morning however he is holding his left front paw up and will not put any weight on it whatsoever, Ive taken him for bathroom breaks and hes hopped the whole way ( very short distance to grass area) Took to vets tonight, examined and vet doesnt think its a pad issue but Zoopy was not at all happy with the examination of his leg and was getting aggressive and stressed ( he was muzzled) Vet has given pain killers and said to come back Monday for X-rays if no improvement. Obviously Ive now spent the evening online looking at sudden limping with no obvious trauma and its not looking good! Im also worried that I shouldnt have put him on pain killers as it may just mask a serious condition... if it is bad are the pain killers likely to work or would I not expect to see any improvement? Thanks for any information
  6. Im definitely considering a bandanna or something similar. Hes fine greeting people just not the head/ear stuff. Thinking about my greyhound people heading I realise its probably the same with any breed, you join a sort of club and other members seek you out! Ive just always had mongrels previously so its never been like this before. Definitely a learning curve.
  7. Oh they arent rude people, all lovely people, Im just surprised how they go straight into the head & ear area assuming all greyhounds love it. I have started warning people now, hes only ever growled as a warning and thats always stopped any further head touching but Ill definitely ensure I warn well in advance.
  8. Im a first time greyhound owner with a rescue who Ive had now for nearly 2 years. He was taken into rescue after 3 years with a family but weve no history of that. Hes definitely not what youd describe as a love bug, a description Ive heard a lot. Its taken me a long time to get him to let me touch his feet, ears and teeth (for brushing) and hes comfortable with me doing that now. What Im really interested in is other greyhound owners and how they greet my boy. Every single one, either out and about or if coming to my home will straight away be in his face, both hands either side of his head, rubbing his ears and every time he growls and they recoil. Ive had dogs all my life, first greyhound as I say and hes definitely got his fair share of issues but I never approach any dog that doesnt know me like these other greyhound owners approach my dog. Theres never a slow approach, maybe show the back of the hand and allow the dog to sniff and be comfortable etc Im just really interested to know if Ive got a really unusual boy who doesnt like strangers cupping his head within seconds of meeting or whether most of you, as experienced greyhound owners would immediately greet an unknown greyhound like this?
  9. Thank you for all your replies, Im sure things will improve! I will try being brave on the outside! And Ive already got a stick just to feel a bit better prepared just in case.
  10. My nearly 9 year old grey was out walking with me on Sunday, having a sniff when all of a sudden a dog slipped its lead and sprung at him. It was awful and took a short while for the owner to get his dog off mine. Long story short, my boy had puncture wounds on his rear end and on his back legs and couldnt weight bare on his back right leg. After a trip to the out of hours vet and £200 bill (paid by the owner of the other dog) we came home and had a very unsettled night, pain killers and antibiotics prescribed with x rays to follow the next day if necessary. I decided that x rays werent needed, obviously sore but nothing broken, really heavy bruising all over inner thigh and tummy just now coming out. My question is this... how do i build my confidence back up walking my boy? I really dont want him to be badly affected by this but so far when walking him since Ive been so on edge with any dog around either on or off lead! Anyone had experience of this and how did you deal with your own anxiety?
  11. Ive noticed the last couple of days that there is brownish marks on the throw where my dog sleeps and its head end. Hes due at vets in a few days time for annual check up but just wondering if anyone has come across this before? I cant see anything unusual in the mouth but Im pretty sure it is drool.
  12. Hi, my boy came in from the garden a couple of days ago with a cut in his pad. I cleaned it and inspected but couldnt see anything embedded. Hes been walking ok on grass and even surfaces but limping on uneven ground. Should I just go straight to vet or has anyone had success with drawing the foreign body out? Ive heard Epsom salts or magnesium sulphate paste can be successful? Any advice appreciated.
