Grey Pup

Grey Pup (4/9)

  1. I am poking around on greyhound-data.com (Its Archer's first race day anniversary today) and can reason out what each of the stats mean on the racing history page, except for one: SP. Does anyone know what this means?
  2. I like this word! Your friend's golden definitely needs some training on how to behave around others. I would be embarrassed if my dog bowled people over and nipped at them, drawing blood or not, meaning to be playful or not. Not okay in my book. As for your grey's behavior, i think it was merited. this guy was all in his business and wouldn't calm down. I would snark too! I get how you are feeling though. I've had my grey 4 months and last Sunday he had, what i though was, a bad day at the dog park. He snarked at 2 brother dogs and was not happy about a 3rd small dog. Having a background in psychology, anytime something happens with my dogs, i first ask "What did we do wrong?" rather than "Why did he do that thing?" Most of the time when i approach it that way i can see, Oh: he just got a brand new toy and i just invaded his space. he's afraid we may take his new toy. Or, Well those 2 brother dogs are a bit bigger than him and came up really fast. He's probably scared or uncomfortable. While i wish my pup was a love sponge to everyone all the time, it's not totally realistic. just like we can't be friendly and bubbly all the time, we humans have bad days too
  3. Thank you for the recommendation! I'll check it out I will pay more attention to his body language in detail but from what i remember, he has his head up and usually has his mouth open in a happy way. he doesn't wag his tail much unless he's playing with other greyhounds (must be greyhounds, weird) but i think his body language is happy. I'll check next time though. Very good thought!
  4. No, not using a retractable leash. By reeling him in, I meant pulling up the extra slack in his normal leash to keep him closer. Sorry if that was misleading.
  5. Hello all! My Archer is my first large dog (my other is a fluffy little chihuahua). Maybe this is a common thing for larger dogs, but i feel like i see people move to the side when we walk past. Sometimes when i open the door to get a package, the deliverer will be a little startled if Archer pokes his head out. My feeling is that people are afraid of my dog. He is the sweetest guy, loves humans, and only wants to be petted and loved, as i'm sure most of yours are too. I get where they're coming from though: He's quite large, especially for a grey, and he looks like a tiger. He walks really well on the leash and doesn't pull or dart all over, but he sometimes will start walking towards approaching people to get pets which i could see as looking aggressive. The alternative though is that i starting reeling him in when i see people coming, but that looks bad too. I bought him a bandana that just came in the mail that says "I'm Friendly" in fun colors to see if that helps. Does anyone else experience this? Any other ideas to help people see my approaching dog isn't going to hurt them?
  6. I love how the slumberball fits my guy but DH and I have been looking for 2 days at beds and can't find a suitable alternative. Does anyone have a good bed that they like?
  7. I'm glad this story is headed towards a happy ending! Posting this in case someone in the future reads this for their own pup, I know a hound that was afraid of her crate too until the owner found that if they draped a blanket over the crate and made it a cave, then she was totally fine! Maybe something about the bars bothered her, but once it was a cave she gladly went into her crate.
  8. Oh no!! Archer loves his!! I'll have to stock up and then vacuum seal them to make them flat to store
  9. Sorry to hear about Conrad, but welcome to Bisbee! I have stayed the night in Bisbee! SUCH A FUN TOWN! Gives you the heebeegeebees when you read some of the historical plaques around town but it's a great trip! Bisbee was on my short list of names if we got a girl, BTW
  10. Saoirse was my number one name choice if we got a girl
  11. Welcome from Arizona! I am coming up on one week with my guy, Archer, and I researched every single thread it seems on this forum to be prepared for anything my guy might throw at me since he is a bounce-back (returned to the adoption agency). Fortunately, i was somehow blessed with a perfect transition and didn't have many of the issues i had prepared for, including restless nights. Everyone here is a huge wealth of knowledge! Reach out with any questions you can't find answers for. We'd love to help!
  12. Thank you to everyone for the kind comments! We kennel him if DH and I are both leaving the house or cannot supervise appropriately, but I do like the peanut butter muzzle treat idea! He doesn't mind the muzzle too much: tries about 3 times to paw it off and then forgets it's there. Boy does love his peanut butter though!
  13. Here is the required photo! 😄
  14. So far it's been great! Good on a leash and in the car, both he and my Chihuahua are getting along (not buddies yet, but no issues), slept through the night even though he woke up earlier than I'd like. Took our stairs like a champ, tile is okay but he isn't wild about the hardwood if he can avoid it. Such an encouraging first night but we're still taking things slow and being cautious. I attribute a lot of our early success to all the help and advice from you all so THANK YOU!!
