Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. I just got these from Amazon for my Greyt, he seems to be prone to getting cuts on his pads or feet. I'm using one now for a cut to keep it clean & he can't lick it. I ordered the medium. Bark Brite New Lightweight Neoprene Paw Protector Dog Boots Designed for Comfort and Breathability in 5 Sizes
  2. Just got test results.....negative on Giardia. So I have no idea what happened & neither does Vet, will keep giving him meds. He's much better today & we all got to sleep last night. I'm thinking he ate something out in the yard, guess it doesn't matter as long as he's better. Thanks again everyone, Debbie Bird bath still going in front yard
  3. Thank you.....was a customer of Chewy.com for many years, unfortunately the food I was buying just became too much $......will check on the products recommended though. Mine don't get beef or lamb (bad gas), I'm doing Kirkland Turkey/Sweet Potato-grain free, best yet for the two of them. This is the first 2 Greys I've ever had, I wonder because of what I've read on the forum, etc... if they all have bad tummies and poop like a cow!!! We use to rescue and adopt Afghan Hounds for over 35 years.....being a hound....believe me all tummies are not the same!
  4. Yep, the bird bath is moving to the front yard, after the water thaws....... Hi Irene.....thank you for your kind thoughts......small world isn't it......Carrera & Recon sleep in their night shirts every night, we ALL love them Off to bed, let's hope we get some sleep.
  5. Update, brought sample to Vet, they will give me results tomorrow. She thinks it could be Giardia, possibly from drinking the bird bath water or something else in the yard (Raven poop, etc..). He checked out fine except for his diarrhea, will keep him on chicken/rice for a few days. She gave me RX for Metronidazole which will clear up Giardia & or the bad tummy. Giardiasis refers to an intestinal infection that is caused by the protozoan parasitegiardia, which is the most common intestinal parasite that is found in humans.Dogs develop the infection by ingesting infectious offspring (cysts) that are shed in another animal's feces. Guess this can be a common issue, with all the dogs we have had never had this one, he's the only one who can reach the bird bath so I really think that's what it's from if it is Giardia. Thank you to all of you for your great suggestions. I'm going to get some of that Evangers next time I get to PetCo/PetSmart. I'm glad I took him in & I'm glad you all told me to. Maybe we can get some sleep tonight Debbie P.S. Rockets Mom....I see you are in Phoenix-we are in Prescott.....my 2 came from Tucson track and Recon was fostered in Phoenix. Are you going to Mardi Greys on Saturday? I was going to go but I think I'll sit this out, don't want him around a lot of dogs right now.....do you know Leah & Jim? WHOOPS!!! Sorry Don I didn't look at your personal info first........please excuse my assumption that you were Rocket's mom......should be DAD!!!
  6. Thank you, will stop pumpkin, just got back from our walk, his poop was pure liquid now. No weight loss....will do stool sample as you suggest if not better today/tonight. I'll skip the Pepto and try some Kaopec.... His appetite is still very strong, waiting on the rice to cook now.
  7. Hi all....my male for the past 2 nights has gone out to poop 3x's......some history....he's been with us for just over a year, 5 years old, loves the inside-hates the outdoors, spoiled rotten , had really soft poop when we adopted him & it took me months to get it to a firm state. Tried Olewo carrots, didn't work as well as pumpkin. He eats 2x's a day, dry food with a tablespoon of pumpkin-has doggie treats but no people food. My female is fine & eats the same thing...so I know it's not the food. Recon has no temp, acts fine all day, doesn't go out like he has at night now (thank goodness for doggie door), checked his poop yesterday from that night and it's a really soft mess but not diarrhea. This guy would never go out in 20 degree weather at night unless he has to go....He didn't poop on his walk yesterday morning because he was all pooped out from the night before, this is usually when he goes.... It's now 6:30 am, he went out at 12, 3 & 5 (I got up)......I'm going to put him on straight boiled chicken with rice after we get back from our walk, give him a dose of pepto......any other suggestions? Thanks for you help in advance.... Debbie
  8. Hi, excellent advice by all. One of mine has very sensitive hearing, she just doesn't like loud noises in or out, the other could care less, so it might help if you can determine this overtime. When I hear a trash truck coming I stop and try to cover her ears. My other hates to go outside because he thinks he's going to miss something. I have to encourage him to go when he starts "wiggling".....he has free use of the doggie door and plenty of yard but he's been known to stop and pee instead of going all the way out....we learned the hard way....now after a year I still try to make an effort to encourage him all the way out the door. I make him go before we go to bed and he just hates it! I think the advice about taking yours out as soon as he eats is really important....that's the way a puppy learns too. Glad he is doing better. As far as crating, sorry can't help as we have never crated, they are most happy on the couch upside down ... plus don't forget they are crated all during their racing time, can you imagine? When we go out and leave them, they have free rein and use of the doggie door.....the only thing my male does is tear up the couch cover and we make sure to put any newspapers up, they just don't seem to be (too) destructive types....you might think about having 2, if you work or are gone a lot.
  9. Thank you for your replies.......I was thinking the same thought
  10. Hi all: We are traveling in our RV and my female Carrera is worse than ever when riding (shakes, drools, pants, etc..). I usually have given her children's Benadryl and or Rescue Remedy....well nothing has helped this trip. I called my Vet and told her the situation, she sent us an RX for the Diazepam 10mg, I wanted to asked for Xanax (as recommended by other pet owners here) but since we are in another State thought it best to try this till we get home & not complicate the matter. So......should I give her a dose about 30 minutes prior to drive off? Does anyone have experience with this? I sure hope it works because she is miserable, then to top it off we had a huge thunder & lightening storm last night, none of us got any sleep (except my male Recon). Happy to hear any suggestions....thank you.
  11. Last month I purchased a bowl called Brake-fast (Brake-fast.net) you can go online to their site, they also sell on Amazon. I purchased the medium stainless steel, wish I had gotten the plastic instead, it's a pain to remove the 3 thingies & wash everyday. It does seem to help slow my Recon down, I've also moved his bowl away from my girl Carrera, as he "races" to eat. He barely chews the kibble and he's a total pig. I feed them both Kirkland chicken, rice, veggie. They do get some treats during the day and this boy is a drooler! I have always fed my dogs twice a day. I just received my order of Olewo carrots and the beets. Recon has had very soft stool since we got him in November and he licks himself like a cat.....hoping this will help. Carrera had soft stools for over a year when we first got her, I only knew about pumpkin then and it helped but it really became a main part of her diet. Now trying the Olewo on Recon, will keep you posted. It's nice to read everyone's comments, really helps with some great ideas.
  12. Hi all; just got a notice from Dog Food Advisor about a recall: Nestle Purina has announced it is voluntarily recalling select lots of its Beneful and Pro Plan dog foods because they may not contain the recommended level of vitamins and minerals. Just heard on the news last night that one of the Nestle plants is moving to Mexico, not sure about dog food but plan to stop buying Oreo cookies. Regarding what to feed, when I got my first Grey almost 4 years ago I had to switch to chicken kibble because she had horrible poops from lamb & rice that I had started her on. I've always rescued Afghan Hounds and the lamb & rice was fine with them (over 30 years). At the time I got Carrera I still had one Afghan so they both were switched and things have been pretty good now....I do have to add pumpkin every once in a while....seems to get soft poop when it starts to get hot here (?). Now that I've adopted Recon and my last Afghan has passed, I've been forced to give up Fromm's Chicken ala Veg and went to Kirkland chicken, the cost just got too prohibitive because he is a real food hog! Afghan's just don't eat like Greyhounds. His poops are on the soft side most of the time, didn't notice any difference in changing brands....so I deal with it & keep a stock of pumpkin around which he gets most everyday. I also give them yogurt once in a while. It seems Greyhounds have a problem with soft poop, maybe just the way it is.
  13. Oh I am very familiar with this.....I tried to put Carrera's coat on when she was sleeping with her eyes open....she bit me in the face and eye. Went to emergency and ended up being ambulanced (2 hours away) to a trauma doctor for eye surgery (10 stiches in the muscle) and plastic surgery surounding the area. What a mess I was...my eye still gives me problems and it's been 3 years! So watch out, don't ever get too close if they are "sleeping", you do not want to startle them. She's still with us but I am careful, not her fault. Does anyone have a growler???? Our new adoptie Recon, every once in a while will give a growl when petting him....any ideas on how to stop this?? Thanks
  14. Hi all, just joined....I have 2 greys, Carrera & Recon. I feed them Fromm's Chicken ala Veg...works for both. When I got Carrera 3+ years ago she suffered from horrible gas....took her off lamb & rice and switched to this. I also order the bags from Chewy.com, great price, free shipping and no tax...I'm on auto order. Thanks!
