  1. I know I shouldn't laugh... but just picturing that dog calmly walking up and biting the vet...
  2. Yeah, now that I know for sure, I'll tell vets in the future. Although he doesn't like being manhandled, he is a great blood donor so I was really surprised that he snapped at the tech just for an x ray. And this probably sounds stupid, but I was worried and didn't realize he had to be restrained like that for an X-ray, even though I work for a human doc. Just does to show you aren't thinking clearly at the e vet at midnight! I'm happy he didn't make contact.
  3. My husband took Jake to the dog park late last night (always when he's the only one there). It was pretty cold, but Jake never seems to mind. When he got back, Jake started coughing and acting like he was trying to vomit but nothing came up. Of course we thought of bloat as that is one of the main symptoms. We brought him in even though he seemed otherwise okay. Vet said it almost certainly wasn't bloat because of the way he was acting. They tried to do a chest x-ray, but Jake wasn't having it and tried to bite the tech. Then the tech reprimanded us for not letting them know he doesn't like being restrained (First of all, what dog does? Second of all, they didn't ask!) They did do a CBC and that was normal. He got a steroid shot and some hydrocodone cough medicine. Overall $260 (would have been $500 with x-ray) and one sleepy dog. He seems perfectly fine today. Vet thinks it is/was bronchitis. I hope that's the end of it! Photo just because
  4. Poor baby! I'd be a worried mess too! When we first went to dog parks, Jake would also run until his hocks were bloody and raw- even after just a few minutes. We stopped going to the dog park, but not because of that. We can't trust him around high-energy dogs, and I don't trust the other owners. We do go to the dog park late at night if and when it is empty, and he has slowly stopped tearing up his feet. We also don't let him run for as long as he wants, because I think he would run himself ragged if we let him!
  5. Awesome! So will you name your greyhound after HP too? Luna's my favorite (Luna Lovehound?) but HP lends itself to lots of dog names
  6. He's adorable! Albus from Harry Potter?
  7. Honestly I think this is good for pretty much any dog (or person). Jake is very calm, loves people, and would usually not be considered a "nervous" dog. However, I learned that he has limits like everyone. When we have parties at the house, such as a pool party that lasts all day, he will eventually seek quiet and has even growled at people petting him, which is so out of character. It's his way of saying that he's done for the day and we respect that. Great reminder!
  8. If it makes you feel better, I told my vet cousin about our diet plan (raw chicken with liver and table scrap add-ins) and he said that sounded just fine. He didn't even reprimand me for giving Jake milk (OMG he LOVES milk!) As for them dragging it all over... yes. I know it's gross, but our carpet sucks anyway and usually Jake eats it all in one bite. Usually...
  9. Good for you! Once they get used to the raw chicken, you may want to see if they will eat the thighs whole, only because it will cut down on prep time. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get Jake all of his nutrients without resorting to canned food a few times a week. He will only eat liver if it's cooked and that is a smelly mess... It looks like you've already discovered the best thing about raw- less poop!
  10. Your situation sounds as good as anyone's I think. Unless maybe if you're retired and have a fully-fenced acreage (dream!) My DH and I both work full-time so Jake is home alone most of the day. Sometimes DH will go home during his work break, and sometimes not. Jake is usually napping so he doesn't really care either way. Then again, we do have a dog door so he goes out on his schedule.
  11. We're in the same boat with Jake. He has gotten better with time, but he will still growl if he thinks a bone is being threatened. We just leave him alone when he has bones. If we had small kids it might be more of an issue.
  12. I'm sure other people will have more extensive advice, but I think you need to start training 101 again. Take him outside very often. Praise and treats when he goes outside. You reprimanding him when he goes inside probably doesn't help at all because he doesn't know what he's being yelled at for. It could even make him more fearful and therefore likely to pee. If he goes inside and you catch him at it, say no and lead him outside. Where again, you praise and treat. If you see a spot and didn't catch him, clean it up with an emzymatic cleaner (like Nature's Miracle) and move on. He will get the idea.
  13. This is the second post today of new owners worrying that their dog isn't wagging his tail enough Some greyhounds just aren't tail waggers, but they will show their contentment and happiness in other ways!
  14. I voted for Walmart because when money is tight my vote goes to the cheaper one... but I second the Shutterfly idea. I have a calendar from them and it is stunning, with very thick pages.
  15. Those are some good looking dogs! Basil is especially gorgeous (but don't tell the others)!
  16. Hi! I'm from Phoenix too! I think you'll find most people on here are willing to talk about sighthounds in general. And we love photos (hint, hint)!
  17. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation- it sends a current through your muscle to relieve pain (or something like that...)
  18. Yay They're around other greyhounds their whole lives so it makes sense they would be very comfortable around them. I hope this helps him to open up more!
  19. I think it might be easier to work with the behavior than the hardware. Look up "alone training." Also make sure he is worn out when you leave and leave him with a frozen kong.
  20. So so sorry to hear this. Prayers for your girls!!! Please please please pull through!
  21. I'm so sorry! Your plan sounds like the best thing in this circumstance. Spoil the heck out of him!
