  1. Okay I hope this doesn't make anyone angry... but the main problem with rescue remedy is that the ingredients are alcohol and water... and very, very minuscule like nonexistent, herbs. It is homeopathic, which means the water is expected to "remember" the properties of the herbs even when they are no longer even in the mixture. Basically, it has all the scientific accuracy of astrology or the flat earth theory. The effect probably comes from the alcohol, in which case it would be a lot cheaper to just buy a bottle of brandy. End rant...
  2. Is it time to start thinking about some sort of anti-anxiety medication to get him to be calm enough to eat? Just throwing out an idea
  3. I think Costco Nature's Domain is the same food as Diamond for a lot cheaper- like made in the same plant but just given a different label.
  4. Take her in to petsmart where they have a scale and see for yourself. Just seeing ribs isn't a sign of being underweight- I would ask a greyhound person what they think because sometimes lots of well-meaning people will tell you to put weight on your dog when they don't need it. Also, is she still new? When we first got Jake he would act starved all the time too, but eventually he slowed down and has now become a picky eater!
  5. You have received some great advice here so I won't repeat... but I wanted to say that you are doing great and sometimes the dogs just have loose stools because they are still settling in. Enjoy this getting to know you period and try to have fun!
  6. Sorry if repeated- didn't read all the comments- Is it possible for you to first come out at noon, then one, then two, then three... to see how well he does with longer hours and work him up to 8? If not, he will probably be just fine over 8 hours. Jake has a dog door, but I don't even know if he goes out at all during the day. My husband goes home for lunch sometimes and he barely lifts his head Also, if you haven't bought the crate yet maybe see if you can rent one. As long as there are no other reasons for needing to crate him (such as a cat or if he just likes it) you may end up letting him have free reign fairly quickly. I think we ended up crating Jake for all of 1 week.
  7. I would tend to say stick with a food if it is working for you. However, I totally understand not wanting to deal with the logistics of getting food out of town. Does Amazon sell it?
  8. Welcome to the cult club! Gabby sounds like a sweetheart! If you have any photos we'd love to see them!!!
  9. I'm so sorry to hear this. Jake just broke his leg a few weeks ago and had it repaired. We went with the repair to try to save the leg, but most people actually told me that recovery from an amputation is easier. I would say leave them at the vet with those good IV drugs as long as your pocketbook will allow. Also, try to be at home with them for the first few days. Good luck!
  10. This probably wouldn't work with very scared dogs, but with Jake all it took was us showing it to him a couple of times and then locking him out while we were inside. His longing to be with us overcame his fear of the flap and he has used it like a champ since!
  11. Don't worry, I was just kidding. It's an unofficial "rule" that we need to see photos of new houndies!
  12. I'm so, so sorry for your loss. That is way too young, but letting him go peacefully in bed was your last gift to him.
  13. Congratulations on deciding to adopt a grey! You will NOT regret it- in fact you will soon wonder what you did before you had a hound! Just please remember the forum rules . We need lots of photos when you get your pupper!
  14. I made a new thread for Jake's recovery- he's doing SO well!
  15. I talked to the vet and they prescribed an NSAID (not sure which one) to go with the tramadol and hopefully reduce the dose. DH just sent me a video of him walking (hopping...) around the yard. He tries to hop pretty fast actually. I think it helps with his balance. Should we worry about his going too fast? I know the vet said no running or jumping, but he is more hopping on his 3 good legs. I'll try to post the video later.
  16. He is on a LOT of tramadol, but the vet said with his bruising and swelling they didn't want to do an NSAID. However, I think I will call again and see if we can get him some Rimadyl because his swelling and bruising is almost gone. The e-vets were good, but not really greyhound-savvy, so I think I will take him to the normal vet for follow-up care.
  17. Last night was frustrating. We got him in the crate vs the x-pen because we have to work today. He pooped in the crate and when we tried to get him out of there he growled and snapped and sat in the poop If that wasn't bad enough, when we finally got him out, he started hopping all over the house tracking poop. So we had to clean him and the floors and throw away a comforter at midnight last night (yes, I know it is washable, but it was midnight and it was so much easier to throw away one Goodwill blanket...) DH and I were both pretty pissed and yelled at him (in the heat of the moment) so I got to feel guilty about that because it's not his fault and he's in pain.... hoping for a better day today! He was eating well, but in the past few days he has not wanted to eat very much. I would say 1/2 or less of what he normally eats. He has always been picky, so I am trying to change things up a bit for him. He does not stand to eat or drink, but he does readjust himself on the bed and will sometimes try to stand to go out. The one thing he REALLY wants is to jump on the couch- and that's a no! We have been using a towel or lift harness around his hip area to help support his back half while walking, although he has been doing better walking since yesterday. He kind of kangaroo hops on his good legs and holds the bad one up. At this point I'm wondering if the amputation would have been better, but I hope when it's all over we will be happy with our decision. Thanks for listening to me vent! Today is Jake's second gotcha day- not how I was expecting to spend it, but I still love my little brat
  18. He pooped! Lol ... He stood up and we helped him all the way ... To the kitchen! Still, he didn't sit in it which was my big fear, and tile is easy to clean.
  19. Just peed outside! I've never been so happy to get splashed by dog pee! He still wants to murder is when we lift him, but that will take time
  20. Well, we got him up and outside for a bit. He growled and snapped, but I know it's best for him. He needed a lot of help, but he took a few steps on his own. He was much more willing to walk around when we first brought him home, but I'm guessing that was the good iv drugs. Baby steps... He got a burger patty for his effort.
  21. It is probably just a muscle strain. I'm hoping it's better tomorrow!
  22. We got him up. We just muzzled and put a towel over his head and lifted the bed til he got up. I know that sounds really harsh, but I didn't want him laying in his own pee anymore. He was mad about it but did get up and move to the clean bed. Now resting. This sucks!
  23. How do I get him to stand up when he doesn't want to? If we try to lift him up in any way he growls and snaps. Should I ask the vet for more pain pills? We already doubled it...
  24. Is it possible to give a low-dose antibiotic daily to prevent them? I know they do this with people sometimes... (btw UTIs are freaking awful!)
