  1. Don't see how anybody can tell if he's only been there a few days. Many greyhounds are inert / deer in the headlights for a couple weeks when encountering a new home, even when there is another dog there. Many less outgoing hounds DO do better with a buddy, but no guarantees.

Tail wagging is @ meaningless. I've had only one hound of my own who was a big-time wagger.

Not sure what to make of an agency who didn't feel the dog was a good fit for your home but adopted him to you. That is odd.

I agree- a few days is not long enough. It depends if you have the patience and love.

  2. It does take an adjustment period. i had a dog on pheno for cluster seizures and it did take a few weeks to not walk around drunk. In case of breakthrough seizures you can apply an ice pack on the back below the neck. Also after they have "come around" something sweet, not too much ( a tsp) such as Vanilla Haagen Das ice cream. It stablilizes their blood sugar and the ice pack lowers their body temperature. Do it just for a few minutes. I remember i had to walk around with my dog before he stopped stumbling after a seizure. So sorry you and your dog are going through this. My dog towards the end of his life didn't have any seizures. Not sure if it is because he was allergic to everything and i could feed him Venison i found out. He also got some local raw honey as he had seasonal allergies. He lived a long, happy life :-)

That's my boy!!!!! Some of you wanted to see a picture. You should see his eyes.

the bottom pic is when he was still at the kennel. That's me, Charlie and Sharon leaning into me. This is the pic his foster mom saw and hoped i was the one who would adopt him. Although after 3 yrs he looks a little apprehensive to me in this picture but was fond of me by then. Sharon was adopted within two days :-)

  4. We are feeding raw, and Jake seems to prefer the chicken. I don't want to give him all ground chicken with bone because I'm afraid that's too much bone. There are two local stores that have boneless chicken leg meat for $1.37 a lb (El Rancho or something like that) and Fry's has ground hamburger for $2 a lb (72-28). Are these okay to feed him (along with bone and organ meat)?

My mom asked the butcher at one store and he made a comment about antibiotics in the chicken and so it wouldn't be good for dogs. My first thoughts were (1) Don't they give antibiotics to all chickens, so it would end up in dog food anyway and (2) then why are you selling it for human consumption?!

    Thanks for your input.

There are brands of chicken that are raised without hormones or antibiotics. Bell & Evans is one. Depending on where you shop you can get chicken raised without that too. I buy it for myself and can't go back to Perdue or other chicken. The taste is so much better.

I buy raw through a co op. I am in MA but it comes up from a farm in MD every 5 weeks. As more people feed raw the co ops have grown. Check out what time4anap posted, i see you are both in AZ. I worry about raw meat that hasn't been frozen for the reason in case there is a parasite it would not be killed. I have heard dogs getting ill from raw meat from the market. I see some here do it that way but i am just leery.

  5. Fantastic news!!! :yay:clap

I have to say, I am glad to have followed this story. Most importantly to see how well things are turning out, but also because I wouldn't necessarily think to investigate laproscopic surgeries and Charlie's recovery has been amazing so it will be in my mind to always investigate if such a thing exists. I honeslty can't believe how fast he was back to normal! :thumbs-up

Through all this ordeal, if it can ever help another dog it would be extra special.

  6. wish i knew how to do those dancing peppers! Charlies biopsy update! No cancer found!!!! It all remains idiopathic WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Only thing the Doctor said was i should bring him back to the cardiologist in a month because of an irregular heartbeat. Oy! I asked, wasn't this related to the cardiac tamponade?

He said it was separate and Charlie has been a topic of conversation amongst the doctors involved. So, i will do this but not just yet. He needs to heal and go in the car to a fun place first. I hope to take him for a short ride to a park nearby next week. Not too many dogs and they are all leashed, it isn't a dog park.

Thank you everyone for all your support XOXO :beatheart

  7. I would get him checked out as Greysmom said, just to rule anything medical out. I've had my Charlie 3 yrs come March 22nd. He too was a stray and afraid of the world. Not so anymore.

Does your dog enjoy the long walk in the morning? Do you think you can shorten it?

Greyhounds sleep soundly and when Charlie is in bed and i have moved he has growled too but i ignore it, not saying you should. I just know after all this time it is a response and he won't do anything, sometimes he just gets up and goes into another room. I would try a dog bed also, as greysmom said, in your room. One night not long ago Charlie came running so fast into the kitchen to eat that he slid and had to put his brakes on so to speak. After that he didn't want to come into the kitchen! I bought some rugs and he is back being comfortable. Some of them are so sensitive. I am concerned he doesn't want to eat. Could it be his food? Can you try adding in some no salt broth in it? Also have his teeth checked, wondering if a tooth is bothering him. Keep us posted and i hope you don't give up as you've been such a loving owner. Hopefully this can be worked out soon.

  8. Your dog looks very sweet! I adopted Charlie, my Greyhound, 3 yrs ago this month :-) ) I have a German Shepherd who was 10 yrs old and missed my other guy who had passed the year before. She doesn't love all other dogs so i brought her (Rhea) to meet Charlie. It was instant friendship and still is. Let us know how it goes!

  9. How are we healing??

It is a week today that we took Charlie in for Thurs surgery, what a horrible day. I am happy to report it is as if he never had surgery! He is back to his ole self :-) i will call tomorrow for biopsy results.

Small world, i went to the Town Hall yesterday to pay excise tax, i had fallen behind on so many things since i was preoccupied with Charlie. I told the woman what had happened-she had the same surgery a couple of years ago! She is doing well and they told her that perhaps it was a virus that caused it. Odd but i am glad she is doing well and my Charlie too :-)

    Thanks Tracy-hope you are well!
