Still wet behind the ears

Still wet behind the ears (3/9)

  1. Ha ha, what a sweet guilty face! Hmmm. Maybe vinegar along the edge of the compost to deter the kitties? I'm afraid of putting it too close to the flowers or grass for fear of killing the plants. I actually just planted some catnip near the digging spots thinking the cats won't dig where they like to nibble. I wonder if sharp smells (lavender, rosemary....) would deter the cats? Hadn't thought of a treat but maybe if I start freezing peanut butter in a kong it will interest and occupy Pipes more than searching out the kitty kibbles. Definitely worth a try. Thanks for the suggestions!
  2. Spring has arrived. The flower gardens are freshly turned and composted which is quite a draw for the neighborhood cats. All Piper wants to do is race outside, dig up and devour those delectable droppings. She now wears her muzzle and poop guard everytime she goes into the fenced backyard. We spend hours in the yard during the warm months. I hate to keep her muzzled for all that time but have no choice since she has developed an insatiable taste for those feline appetizers. Any advice on how to curb that drive? Thanks!
  3. Interesting. The muzzle never seems to bother her ears. She ran in quite a few races, though. Are their ears sometimes yanked or pulled roughly to verify tatoos before each race?
  4. Is this typical with greys? Piper has had her ears checked by the vet and seems to be fine. However, she sometimes yelps when her ears are gently rubbed. She loves petting and scratching on the head and around her ears. She will sometimes-not always- yelp if an ear is wiggled or scratched more than a few seconds, then lean in for more petting. Any thoughts?
  5. I use Grizzly Salmon Oil and get it from our local pet shop.
  6. My black grey had major dandruff problems. We tried cocnut oil for several months (both internally and externally) which she loved. It helped a bit, but switching to fish oil made a huge difference. 3-4 squirts twice a day keeps her coat soft, super glossy and the dandruff away. We saw a difference within only a few days. Since we started the fish oil last fall, her bare butt has totally filled in as well. Don't know if it was due to the fish oil or not but she is looking mighty fine!
  7. Hi...I noticed you babysit Greys and best of all, are located nearby. We are in flemington. Is there a way I can contact you directly? Thanks!

  8. Thanks, the article gives me some good perspective. Most people are great about giving her space if she turns away from being petted, but I will definitely try letting them give her a treat. Sounds like a good strategy for helping her become a little more tolerant of strangers.
  9. After many months of brutal winter weather, Piper has started going for walks again. She came to us last July and within a few months would tolerate strangers petting her. She could also handle quiet, calm dogs. Now she seems frightened of both. She always gets lots of requests to pet her when we walk through town but she physically backs away. She seems terrified of other dogs. She will discretely watch quiet ones if they are a distance and then turn her head completely away within ten to twenty feet. If the dogs are barking or trying to play she will back up and try to bolt. She loves her walks and I want to use the opportunity to develop her socialization skills. Any advice on how best to do so? Thanks.
  10. Our pooch had an issue with very loose stools after we adopted her last summer. It took about six to eight weeks to clear it up. At 65 lbs, we kept her on 1 1/2 cups of the same good quality dried food twice a day with a few spoonfuls of rice and a slosh of warm water over everything. We also gave her about half a banana a day but no other treats. The rice and banana really seemed to help bind things together. A few times almost too well. We tried yogurt because she had nasty gas but it seemed to loosen everything up, and although she loved it we quit adding it. Every time there was a change in routine or new people in the house, things would loosen up again. It seems to be the way she reacts to stress. Once she seemed to get used to us and her new routines, the loose stools and gas problem have pretty much dissipated.
