  1. hello, My current foster Marie, battled worms. she came from the track and her first vet visit and they were treating for Hook worms. However as the months went on she still had a parasite. it was a visible worm think a small piece of angel hair pasta. that when it moved form a semi T shape on it's head. so not the rice sized tape worm either. She was on the 6 month Panacur protocol. I was very frustrated for her because hook worms are not visible, and what she was shedding were visible. I added in food grade diatomatious earth, about 1 1/2 tsp per meal to make a tablespoon per day. she was shedding more of her true tape worms. i sent a photo to the vet, they finally gave her a Praziquantel and viola she was cleared i the two next fecal tests. I did a lot of web searching- parasite searching, images in particular. Not recommended. I am my dog's avdocate, i collected her poo every time she went, because of how Hooks are transmitted in soil. I had posted a photo here on greytalk of her worm. Try the food grade diatomatious earth- and get a sample of the worm. use a tooth pick to collect. it will help with identification. i have been there- just this year.
  2. my foster Marie came from track with a broken hock, and hooks. She was on the every 14 day panacur treatment. but i was getting frustrated because she was shedding an angel hair 3/4 in segment. All the reading i was doing i found these weren;t hooks or tapes. Well i read about using Food Grade Diatomatious Earth in her food. I was giving her about 1 1/2 tsp per meal and she started having more of these segments in her poo. from looking at parasite specialty sites, these are a variety of tapes. She finally got treated with Praziquantal. And her fecal has been clear. i would suggest you read and decide for your self, but it helped my foster sweety.
  3. i hope you go to the vet for some antibiotics. it looks like a hot spot, my golden would get them after swimming and not getting dry.
  4. peanut butter can be magic. kudzu- has wonderful suggestions to desensitize. there have to be fun trips too, like McD for cheeseburger. around the block, just for no reason other than to get used to going for a ride.
  5. We have used the Adaptil collar on our spooky Remy with great success. We have also added the diffuser and put a collar on the timid foster. It seems to have helped her, and she no hangs out in the room with the diffuser, Remy's room. I have to say Remy has become more outgoing, we've had him 2 years in August. He will come up to us to get petted now, where this was not his personality previous to having an Adaptil collar.
  6. Hello Greytalk Experts, My Foster has worms, she has been with us since Feb, and has been on the long treatment of Panacur every 14 days. she is still shedding these flat segments in her poo. I have been giving her DE to combat the worms. But she is still shedding, one or two segments, usually in her morning poo. her monthly treatment is Interceptor. I have sent our Foster Co-ordinator a photo of the worm hoping we can get her cured soon. http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/peglyhubba/media/P1200121_zpskw2a7guo.jpg.html thanks for any help and advice.
  7. Hi kb0792, I am dealing with a foster, Marie, that is cycling through different fears as well. She is currently roaching and relaxed as a greyhound should be. But she is not wanting to go outside to go potty with the other dogs, then she won't come in once she is outside. I have no idea what her current issue is, we had some super windy days a few weeks ago, and that started her looking at the trees like she had never seen them before. She came to us with a broken hock (ankle) in early March. I had to put down the runner rugs again due to her fear of the tile floors to begin with. she will still try to avoid stepping on the tile. I have one option that has worked with our spook Remy, he wears a collar from Adaptil, it has pheremones in it. my sister (GreyWrangler) suggested it and my husband and I believe it has helped him become less fearful. Marie's collar is on order from Amazon, along with the plug in diffuser. fingers crossed. Peggy
  8. my foster was just spayed last week tuesday- today is sunday. she smelled of urine this morning and she and the bed got a washing today. I had told my foster co-ordinator. I will put a diaper on her tonight- to monitor leakage. Is this temporary? {can it be fixed as her surgery site heals. by the way it looks great, no redness or any thing.} can i give her 2% milk, the cat is the only one in the house that drinks milk and the 1% goes bad more quickly than 2%(weird). thanks for any help or comments.
  9. my cats love a cat tree, they have a vantage point to watch the dogs, and with 4 cats there is always somebody on the top tier of tree. Costco has affordable models, and the pats stores sell higher priced models. good luck, i hope the kitties adjust soon.
  10. I realize this post was from 2004 - however I am about to receive a foster with epilepsy. he is cat safe and my husband had medically controlled epilepsy. We had a golden that had a few seizures, when he had valley fever (a desert fungus). if you are still collecting data i would be happy to send the questionare back to you. peglyhubba@gmail.com
  11. Hello Greyhound Experts, The girl foster, has developed the pimple spots again. i will re treat w/Chlorahexidine. Is there something i can add to her food to strengthen her skin and fur. i have to call the foster coordinator(on vacation) to get her into the vet. i may just take to my regular vet and self pay...she is a great dog. and the spots don't bother her.
  12. I can relate to the big D. Our Remy was at the point of explosive, uncontrolable, bouts last night in the house, he was howling in so much pain. we went to E-vet at midnight and $360.00 later. Flagyl, forti-flora, and Hills special diet. he had rice and chicken with 1 packet of forti-flora on top. only about 1 cup total of food. he ate it as if it was normal food. i ordered Olewo beets and carrots from Amazon today. keep feeding the rice and chicken, when you add in kibble, make sure it is mushy. I hope Stanley is firming up and feeling better soon.
  13. Yes, the over the counter has red dye. I've been doing at 50/50. I will add more water for next wash. There has been a marked improvement from just cleaning with chlorhexadine. Thank you for such a great diagnosis. The images in google images are extreme. I'm sure the Vet Doc will be happy that I got your advise to help her so quickly. thank you tbhounds! thank you greywrangler gryhnds4us, macoduck
  14. thank you all, it looked better with just the first wash and cleansing. i did put antibiotic ointment on the open sore. and the brown specks were cleansed away w/perineal cleaner. so it is cleaner down there already. after dinner we checked and cleaned it again. hubby is going up to walgreens for chlorhexidine or antiseptic skin cleanser. we have a vet appt at 5 pm tomorrow. Why do all the fosters have issues? or is it me, every foster has had to go to the vet...
  15. we've had her since Wednesday evening last week. I haven't noticed her licking or bothering the area. I have had to watch her closely due to cat situation. i think i will call my adoption coordinator, and see if i can take her into the vet. The wet rag didn't clean up the brown specks. but she liked the wet cloth.
  16. Hi Greyhound Experts, My first female foster. She was doing a full perfect roach today and i noticed some red discolorations in her abdominal area. I am going to put a warm wet wash cloth in the area and then wash with some very gentle perineal skin cleanser. i want to post a couple of pics, to show before pics. And maybe it is just a skin issue? She is with us to do an extended CAT test, she does great 98% of the time. If the cats runs, she will give chase. And get her muzzle put on. She hates her muzzle, rubs on everything to get it off. Any advice on getting her to not want to chase the other pets, would be helpful. <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/peglyhubba/embed/slideshow/"></iframe> the first 8 images of the white and light brindle patches dog are relevant to this post.
  17. Boy I love this Greytalk forum! My foster that was cat safe went to a furever home yesterday. The adoption group had two people waiting for a cat tolerant hound. I called the Adoption Director to see if the dog named Bunny, deemed cats W/W (with work), could come for a sleepover. It was in the cards. We met the other foster parents and got Bunny at 8:15 pm last night. We have 4 indoor only cats. if they go outside they become food for coyotes, and Bobcats. Bunny likes cats, but as a thing to chase. my relaxed cats are safe. The white fluffy cat, likes to tease and run, and jump near the dog. She has been in her muzzle, she takes redirection. My bossy kitty has punched her in the muzzle. But I want to give her a few days, I think it's all too new. She broke her leg in April and has been in cat free home. She was tested and labeled W/W. So now we have a thunderstorm rolling in and she is freaking out. i texted the foster dad and yep she is a thunderphobe. she got some Bach's but i have no thundershirt. poor baby. i have no real question or input, just, talking about the new foster. Bunny aka hashtag blondie
  18. Our current foster, likes to chew wood. i have a sheet of plywood in the sewing room so my chair will move on the carpeted floor. he was chewing on the plywood. we have mesquite and peach trees in out yard, that were trimmed in the spring. i cut about a 16" piece of each, that are about 1 1/2 in diameter. Apollo the foster likes his new sticks for chewing. and he is a toy destroyer. he has had denta sticks when the other dogs get them, they are gone in less than a minute. I have tried antlers w/my golden he sniffed and never chewed. my sister gives her greys, fresh beef short ribs. and takes the bones once they are completely clean. they are lucky dogs.
  19. I bought a bag of Diamond Natural Whitefish and sweet potato, to help the foster. It was specified that he needed to be on grain free. He is still in the process of switching over to completely Diamond. i was boasting of his firm poops just the other day on FB. I was just signing on today to look for help for his flatulence. he has had terrible gas since day one. thanks very much FountianLady
  20. and after..... any tips on how to keep him from scratching or bruseing it? I'm thinking a snood may help keep him from scratching the sutures open. once we are a couple more days healed.
  21. I love the way your write racindog. so eloquent and so true. they do love running. the foster is so puppy and not able to turn the corners and spin to a stop the way Pete does. Remy runs into the area behind the peach tree and has a 6 foot dug dirt circle he will dig and spin in. Pete absolutely hated the turn out muzzle today, he has been with us 3 years and only worn when small dogs visit, and that has only been twice. But he wore it today and did the kick n' scrape around the yard. (it didn't come off) Thank you all for the comments, and the tributes to past racers. they will live forever in our hearts. <3 Murphy & Harry, doggie neice and nephew.
  22. Hello everyone, His name is Apollo he is my 1 year 8 month Foster. Today during a short run he and PETE and REMY colided. There was a yip like he got hurt, but he is sensitive. well i checked his ears and neck, didn't feel anything wet. the dogs came in got cooled off ,hubby got home i told him i heard a yip, but there is no blood. well we all had dinner they kibble, us human stuff. all dogs relaxing, i lean over to pet the boy and oooohhh, there is flesh showing through his fur under his collar.I immediatley dial the vet (they have an app) with extended hours, and they take walk in emergency's and not super high cost. explained the urgency, and i ws told to call foster coordinator and /director of operations to get her clearance to treat. the wound was just skin cut open in a perfect triangle about 3 inches across, not bloody, not bothering him, he was just roaching. So the Twin Peak Vet Cntr said bring him over. they were open to 9 and i was only 5 pm. TG. Apollo now has a line of sutures about 4 inches long. They were just waking him when we got there to pick up. so he was woooozy to get in the car. the ride home was easy. Right now he is awake., he is whineing, didn't want water, he dosen't want to lay down. i gave a half of each pill, and had to shove down throat. instructions do say start these medications tonight. i only gave half of each, in case he throws up. Caprofen100mg and Cefpodoxime200mg. given with a piece of smoked sausage to disguise. he didn't want to try the smelly stuff.( he was trying to climb over the xpen to get into kitchen for yesterday). My lesson is find the muzzles and use daily. it happens in a nano second. and it's a terrible feeling to know it could of been prevented. He is a sweet foster, so full of Puppy spirit. I was asking my sis GreyWrangler for some help the other day and she told me about. NILIF. i looked it up here and had be using it with the pup and it was going great for us. we have a harness to use while the skin heals. i was going to have a question about getting him to settle, but he has finally. thanks for letting me vent. but while home after taking him to e*vet and taking other 3 dog outside and they run like always, we have an acre fenced, but now, i have the fear, who will get hurt next. yikes....
  23. Hi Maisie's Mom, i have a very skittish hound and his foster mom hated meet and greets because he would deficate in the car. Well we went to the vet for a wellness check last week and a small scrape on the back of his leg and yep- he pooped in the car. he has another scrape on his knee today, it has been cleaned and dressed with wound sealant.he just finished his antibiotic from last week. i have a close vet (2min away) and a greyhound vet (20 min drive). he is wearing innertube collar, and that stresses him and he has to deal with my son being home from college and taking over the hound's room. he likes to isolate. sorry you get lots of opinions- and some grief. keep rescuing- and keep coming to Greytalk, lots of love here.
