  1. NeylasMom: thanks so much for the suggestions & offer to look at a possible trainer's website I may find. I greytly appreciate your feedback & info. I've been working with Emma more & increasing her exercise to her tolerance level & she seems to be gradually improving. She is very stubborn & independent so it looks like she'll require more time than others to adapt & learn the house rules. We've been adopting retired Greys for 15 years, Emma is number 5. As I previously mentioned, Emma is an exception to all our other Greys, in many ways, but she truly is a sweetheart as all of them seem to be. Thanks again! I'll be in touch...
  2. Another reason we wanted a younger Grey was that we recently had to euthanize our 9 year old brindle Grey Girl, Mae, who had a very aggressive form of lymphoma that did not respond to ANY of the standard or non-standard chemo protocols. When Molly's depression over losing another one of her buddies got worse, we knew we had to act quickly to help Molly recover from her loss too. My husband & I could not bear adopting a senior Grey who may have experienced a difficult terminal disease as we had just experienced with Mae... Then Emma came along & our household stress changed as a result of her personality & characteristics (not calm as the kennel thought!). Don't misunderstand me, Emma is a real sweetheart & very food/treat driven which should help the training process, but she definitely has some issues we have to address--including some aggressiveness with growling & showing her teeth to me & my husband when she apparently is afraid (& wants to escape from us or the immediate area). Any trainers you can recommend would be greytly appreciated, NeylasMom. I was given a couple trainer names from our vet, but they weren't personally familiar with them & they weren't Greyhound specific, which may not be a requirement... Thanks again!!
  3. Thanks so much, NeylasMom--I appreciate your research. Everything you mentioned makes senses & I have done some of those things already (not returning her though). The adoption group described Emma as "calm," which is why we thought she would be a probable companion for Molly. Apparenly Emma was a "sleeper" at the kennel--not here! I agree with more exercise. We have a good 1/2 acre of fenced, mostly level & grassy back yard she can run in freely which I encourage as often as possible. She just realized several days ago that she can run full-out whenever she wants back there, so she'll probably continue that more. I bought her a treat dispensing toy, but will check out the other you suggested. We would hate to have to return Emma to the kennel, as we've all bonded already, plus she has made considerable progress in the short time she's been here. However, if she continues to be an aggravation for Molly, then we will have to re-think the entire arrangement. Thanks again!
  4. We adopted a new Grey Girl about 1 month ago from GFNC in N. Carolina. Emma is 2 1/2 yr old, VERY active & has some behavior issues we have never experienced in any of our others Greys over the past 12 years. She is exhibiting SA tendencies, although she can be left alone uneventfully in the house with our senior Grey, Molly, uncrated, for an hour or two IF she sees me & my car leave the driveway. However, if I am outside or in the garage & she can hear me (but can't get to me), she has chewed the doorknob, part of the wooden step next to the door, chewed the door frame if I confine her to a bedroom, jumps on the door I left through, etc. She also jumps onto counters with her front feet to get to any kind of food item she smells, whether dogtreat bags, a dirty dish from people food, or even jumps up to clear whatever she can reach on the counter (paperwork, mail) if she is frustrated. I have resorted to taking her with me on short errands, but have learned the hard way to not leave her alone in the car when there is any kind of dog or people food in it (she ate 2.5# of uncooked ground turkey I had just purchased! We headed straight to the vet to induce vomiting!). Some days I feel like a prisoner in our own home & have to cancel or not make plans outside our home because of Emma's behavior. She knew how to climb stairs from day two when we didn't want her following us upstairs to our home office (because she gets into EVERYTHING or pees & poops when she's up there with me!), so we've baby gated off those stairs--that problem solved. Unless I am up there when my husband cannot be downstairs--then Emma's frustration starts. She is obnoxiously excited to see people--anyone-- & jumps on them & obviously needs more socializing with people than she receives in our more sedate home (no kids, not many people over, etc). She tries to get our fragile senior Molly to run/play with her in our fenced-in backyard, but she gets too excited & aggressive towards Molly, which upsets Molly extremely & she tries to defend herself & get away from her (I've broken up that situation a couple times once I realized this was occurring). Emma is not trying to be mean to Molly--just trying to play, but much too roughly. Long, rambling story shorter (sorry!), I'm looking for a trainer, preferably experienced with Greys, in the south Charlotte or York area of SC who can help address these issues & train me as well. Emma will not use a crate, so we donated it. I've read most of the training & SA threads here & gotten some helpful tips, but would like a trainer's help as well. Any suggestions or recommendations in my area? Thanks for reading & "listening!"
  5. Does anyone have any experience with or an opinion on the following, regarding changing from one probiotic product to another: I am switching from daily Iams Prostora prescription only probiotic (very expensive!) to daily VetriScience, VetriBiotic BD for our senior girl who has inconsistent poop forms, as well as a sensitive tummy (& a picky eater). Since there was no lapse between the 2 different probiotics, should I administer the VetriBiotic at the maintenance dose or at the initial dose (more tablets per day for 4 weeks, then maintenance level)? There are more stains of bacteria in the VetriBiotic than the Prostora. Thanks for any suggestions y'all may have!

  7. Dixidoll: thanks so much! What size capsule do you use & how much Tylan powder in each one for your whippet? I'm trying to determine what capsule size I need to accommodate 1/4 teaspoon of Tylan powder... Do you have an opinion regarding veggie caps vs gelatin caps--which one works better for filling & for not dissolving too quickly? THANKS!
  8. I'm wanting to fill my own veggie capsules with the Tylan powder for Molly. Can anyone tell me what size capsule to buy that will hold approx 1/4 teaspoon? Is size 00 correct? MorganKonaAlex: how much powder did size 000 hold? Thanks for your help!
  9. Live in York, S Carolina which is upstate, approx 30 miles from Charlotte, NC.
  10. Thanks, Batmom. Do you know if there is a reasonably priced internet resource for buying Tylan powder with the vet's Rx?
  11. My specialty vet is now prescribing Tylan for our senior girl, Molly, with chronic diarrhea issues (all diagnostic done except biopsy--will wait on that for now). Did you find any better sources/prices for Tylan/tylosine on the internet with an Rx than through your vet? The specialty vet wants to try Molly on the Tylan for only a week & if no improvement, biopsy &/or steroid therapy. Sounds like many of you use Tylan for an extended period--am I understanding this incorrectly? What do you Tylan users think about such a short duration?
  12. God bless you & Nell through all of this--such sweet, beautiful girls! I pray that by now that you have received answers & that Nell has found the successful help she needs. You sound amazingly strong for your Girl & with that intense love & caring you have for her, she cannot be in better hands or a better family. Nina & Nell are very blessed Girls... Hang in there. You have my/our continuous prayers & good wishes...
  13. Are y'all discussing Hill's i/d (as in "ida") or l/d (as in "lunar")? It's not taking much to confuse me today for some reason...sorry! ;o}}
  14. Thank you, Burpdog! I appreciate your feedback & suggestions!! Our other Grey girl, Mae, is a HUGE "burper" also!! Houndtime, thanks so much for your info & suggestions! Very interesting diet--I may have to try this one! So glad to hear that Fuzzy is doing well now--good thing you said enough is enough in such a short period of time. Thanks for your good wishes too. Thanks so much again, greyhead. Good to know about Budesonide--I was unfamiliar with that drug; sounds like a good alternative to pred. I greytly appreciate all your info & feedback. You've been VERY helpful & so caring too. THANKS! P.S. Greyhead: our Molly looks very similar to your Shane!! They are all beauties!
  15. Batmom: thanks for the add'l Tylan info. Silverfish: I agree with you. I don't mess around too long with any of our greyhound health issues & will seek a referral earlier than later. Molly is currently under the care of a specialty internist at a practice recommended by someone on Greytalk--Upstate Veterinary Specialists in Greenville, SC. Before moving to SC, our grey girls were patients of OSU-VMC in Columbus, OH. Dr. Couto worked closely with me in unsuccessfully treating one of our grey girls who succumbed to a disease rare in greys, ITP (immune mediated thrombocytopenia). I miss having those resources close by, but I'll always do what's best for our greys, as I know all of you greytalk members do also. Thanks for your feedback. Greyhead: THANKS SO MUCH!! So sorry to hear that Spencer is at the bridge--I must have missed reading that somewhere. Please accept my sincerest condolences & apologies for asking how he's doing now. I appreciate all the greyt info you've provided about Spencer's SIBO condition. I agree with your take on a biopsy at Molly's age. Hopefully she won't need a biopsy for the liver nodule, but that's another issue to be addressed in the near future. Does the budesonide produce less side effects than pred? I hate the side effects of long term pred use--how it makes the grey feel & act on it--totally changes their personality (not for the better).
  16. Thanks so much, Batmom. Is Tylan by prescription only & if not, where to obtain it & at what dosage? Can anyone advise whether Slippery Elm would be recommended for Molly's seemingly chronic diarrhea issue (depending on pending bloodwork)? If so, where to purchase, any specific brand & what dosage? Thanks again to all who are responding--this is such a greyt resource with such caring Greyt Moms & Dads!!!
  17. Greyhead: THANKS SO MUCH for providing this info. I will discuss this with Molly's specialty vet & see what she says, after I get the results back from the outstanding GI/pancreas panel. How is your Grey with SIBO doing now? Fortunately Molly's appetite is increasing & is eating everything I offer her (all bland diet--boiled chikn & rice, canned intestinal diets). I think she's starting to put some weight back on already...
  18. Thank you for your good wishes & prayers--these are ALWAYS welcome & appreciated!
  19. Will drive me nuts using incomplete sentences, but will do so to detail as much as possible. Greytly appreciate anyone's feedback/suggestions... Our 12 yr old Grey girl, Molly, vomiting & diarrhea started Feb 1st. No more vomiting other than that 1st day; diarrhea every time she poops--sometimes squirting out (no visible blood to date), frequent nausea; still eating (better the last coupla days); on bland diet since issues started--boiled chickn & rice, canned i/d or canned Iams intestinal . Molly has lost at least 8# so far, is losing muscle strength & is more unstable on her hind legs than usual (has arthritis in multiple joints as well as cervical pain that causes nerve pain/disturbances in her hind quarters prior to these issues). Lately she is alert & responsive, even playful at times, interacting w/ our other younger Grey girl & has been eating every time I feed her (small amounts 3 times a day). Initial bloodwork revealed elevated pancreatic enzymes;local vet treated for pancreatitis (Flagyl, Reglan, Prostora, subq fluids a couple times, 3 doses of Panacur, Amoxi for a couple days, but interfered w/ her appetite/nausea...) Supportive care for pancreatitis not resolving the diarrhea to date. Fecal was negative (not diagnostic, in my opinion: after Panacur, looking for coccidia); Abdominal & chest xrays normal; abdominal ultrasound no significant findings in intestines although there's a 2 cm nodule on her liver & her spleen is enlarged but looks grossly normal. Specialty vet who performed the US said liver nodule would not cause the GI issues. Will address liver nodule/spleen after stabilizing diarrhea condition. Had blood panels done: cortisol & bile acids were normal (no Addison's or underlying liver dysfunction); awaiting results of GI/pancreas panel. I've read the forums on IBD & diarrhea...I can't locate the posts I found last week about fecal/intestinal cultures that should be done as it was found in that specific case that there was an overgrowth of normal flora in the intestine that was the cause. Can anyone direct me to this topic or provide more info about this? Thanks for any insight, feedback, suggestions & positive prayers you can offer Molly & I... P.S. Don't have a smart phone or tablet, so my responses may be a bit delayed (also live in the SE)...
  20. Suzanne Stack, DVM is a Greyhound expert who practices in the Yuma, AZ area. Her expertise ranks right up there with Dr. Couto, in my opinion. I don't know where her practice is near Yuma or the name of it, but if you could contact her, she probably would be able to provide you with the info you seek. She has a Greyhound health site: www.greythealth.com that has many valuable articles about various Grey health issues.
  21. My senior girl, Molly, is currently experiencing diarrhea as she's trying to recover from pancreatitis the past 2 weeks--poor girl. Unfortunately she will have to undergo an abdominal ultrasound in 2 weeks (the earliest available appt at Carolina Veterinary Specialists!) since she's not recovering as quickly as she should be. Her local vet put her back on a prescription probiotic made by Iams called "Prostora" which has really helped Molly previously. However, it is very pricey: $2.25 per chewable tablet for a 15 tablet pack. Molly's best results on this occur when she's given one of these twice a day, so a 15-pack doesn't last long! I'd like to keep her on it regularly, daily, but want to find a more economical, similar product. The live & active culture in Prostora is "Bifidalis." Molly has the typical Grey chronic gingivitis & bad teeth/mouth issues, but when she's taking Prostora, it apparently changes her whole mouth chemistry in a good way: no foul mouth odor, significantly reduced (almost eliminated!) bleeding gums when I brush her teeth & if I brush her teeth every other day rather than daily, it's not the usual problems! That's amazing for Molly's mouth as she has a couple areas of chronic stomatitis (demonstrates how serious her gum/teeth/mouth issues are).
  22. Does anyone have a suggestion of which forum would receive the most responses to my request for Greyhound sitting services in my area (York/Clover area of South Carolina, which is just south of the NC border)? I have found that we live in a "black hole" area for most pet sitting companies, so the choices are VERY limited (we moved here approx one year ago, so don't know lots of people yet). To complicate matters, our 2 Grey girls require some unique (extra TLC) care: one very sensitive senior (Momma's baby!) with osteoarthritis who prefers to stay in her own home rather than go to someone else's & a younger girl who has to be leash walked due to a healing dislocated toe that is presently in a splint. Any suggestions of where to post this request would be greytly appreciated!
  23. This happened to our Mae, 7 years old, just a couple weeks ago, but she actually tore the ligament on the side of the affected toe, causing it to dislocate. Mae was in a lot of discomfort immediately, even after I realigned her toe from under her main foot pad (which caused the swelling to commence), although she never cried out or whimpered. Of course it was after hours, so off to the ER clinic where they xrayed, splinted & bandaged her entire hock. The splint will be staying on a total of 8 weeks & is being checked by the ER clinic weekly (complete bandage change every 2 weeks or sooner if a problem develops) along with my careful daily monitoring. Mae is obviously being leash walked & on pain meds as needed. Mae is a very active girl & I fear that once the splint is taken off for good, that her first free run will result in the same injury. I plan on leash walking her for more extended time periods once the splint is off both to release some of her pent-up energy, as well as gradually strengthen that foot, toe & leg after being immobilized for so long... We'll just have to see how it goes!
  24. Belated, but VERY sincere condolences in the loss of your Jet girl. All of us grey parents have been there & even though we see it coming, we're never truly prepared to make that decision to let them go. You made the final act of ultimate care & love; the most self-less decision to put your grey's quality of life ahead of everything else you're feeling. I feel your loss & pain especially now, as I/we may be having to make a similar decision in the near future... Please do take good care & treasure those good memories of Jet's best days.
