  1. My first Greyhound was a Greyhound/Lab mix. It wasn't uncommon for her to jump into bushes on walks and come out with a bird. The first time I called the vet and he said it was just protein. We finally had a deal where it just had to be gone before we got home. Generally she ate it in one gulp.
  2. We go out in the morning about 7:00, when I come home (about 4:30, but it can be as late as 5:30) and then before I got to bed, about 9:00. I free feed so they eat whenever they want, but I find they like to eat at night, usually between 9:00-10:00. I crated when I first got the dogs but now they have the run of the house. We walk for 10-20 minutes each, depending on the time of day. Our longer walks are usually in the morning and night. The afternoon is usually quicker walk, both because I'm tired and because it's hot. I actually don't leave a radio on and they do fine (although I did with my first dog).
  3. Yep, turns out it is a virus. Poor Mason had a temp of 103.6 and he's dropped 10 pounds (I almost cried). He's on doxycycline and Rhimadyl to help bring down the fever. We're not testing Molly at this time since she's showing no symptoms other than the sneezing. If she starts showing symptoms I'll call and the vet will prescribe meds. It's my first dog with a fever. Oh, and they're not to be around other dogs for 2 weeks so no meets and greets. Mason is thrilled!!
  4. Right now it's normal but in the past when I've taken it it's always been below normal. Basically. I think the thermometer is off so I'm wondering if he does have a temp. Plus, his nose is warm and he just feels warm compared to the other dogs. I do have antibiotics at home I can start him on.
  5. I took his temp and it doesn't look like he had one BUT it was 2 degrees higher than it has been when I've taken it in the past. I'm giving him a few days. If he's still lethargic and sneezing I'll take him in. Molly's fine. Although, treat one, treat both.

  7. They've never had it before and nothing is blooming. I actually thought it might be allergies to the straw I just laid down.
  8. I think the Twin Terros have colds. They're walking around sneezing constantly. Unsurprisingly, Molly isn't bothered at all. Mason is mopey, not wanting to walk and I think he may have a bit of a fever (I'm going to take it now). I'm afraid they're going to generously share it with the dogs who are visiting us. Poor babies.
  9. Butthead, er Mason was also on a food strike. He finally lost enough weigh that I got worried. I switched foods thinking he was tired of his food (he did that before) and that did the trick. We switched from Iams green bag to Purina Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Let's just say the boy is making up for lost time. !
  10. I tried all the expensive foods and it gave Mason horrible diarrhea. We finally settled on the green Iams bag. He did great on it until Butthead went on a hunger strike. We just switched (back) to Putrina Sensitive Skin and Stomach and he's doing great on that too. (Molly has a cast iron stomach and can eat anything.)
  11. The Twin Terrors love PB. They don't get it often but thy love it. I'm greatly amused when my father visits and he has to make sure he doesn't have the "dog jar" of PB.
  12. No issues here and Mason had a glass stomach. If there were changes he would have let me know.
  13. What a gorgeous boy. I think he looks great where he is. No need to take off anything but I'd make sur he doesn't put any more weight on. FWIW, my friend is doing the green bean trick with her dogs. She bought cans of green beans (.49/can) at the store and she's giving them less than half a can per dog. She cut back a cup of kibble. 14. Mason has never done well in the car, standing over me, panting and drooling. This trip was worse than usual; panting and drooling to the point that I called the vet halfway to St. Louis. He can't take Dramamine because it gives him diarrhea. We tried Benadryl but that didn't help at all. Any other suggestions for things we can try to make the car trip easier for both of us? Thanks.
  15. A friend at the gym said she gives her dog raw egg yolks and he loves it. Has anyone done this? Is it safe for them? TIA.
  16. That is such a relief. I'm so glad to hear that they're going to be ok. Hopefully your boy will be fine too. Keep us posted.
  17. That's what someone suggested. I looked at the bag and it looked right. Did I read it wrong? Mason should be getting 5 cups and that's what he gets. Ignore the 3 cups in my original post, it's 5. The other 2 are right; but should they be getting more?
  18. We just started this Saturday. Iams, the green bag. We walk 2-3 times a day for 10-20 minutes each so quite a bit of exercise. I feel like I probably need to increase their food. Mason and Dragoon (92 lbs and 80 lbs) need to drop a few lbs and Molly is perfect (the only one in the house who's kept her girlish figure. 😄
  19. I've switched from free feeding to feeding meals. Mason weighs 92 lbs and is getting 3 cups a day. Molly is 74 lbs and is getting about 2 cups a day. Dragoon, my never full foster is 80 lbs, gets about 2 1/2 cups a day. The dogs are begging way more than they ever were before. Am I under feeding? I feed about 7 am and about 5:30 pm (I've only forgotten to feed once 😏😳). Pros and cons to both free and meal feeding.
  20. Mason was roaching and I was petting him and I found a lump on his chest. It's big (the size of a quarter) and I can move it. It's soft. Any ideas? Of course, I'll be calling the vet ASAP. Also, do you think the appointment can wait until Monday or should I go in earlier? I ask because I'm already taking Monday off school for something so that would work out. But, if we think it's urgent of course I'll go earlier. TIA- GG and Mason
  21. I'm sorry you're going through this. I will NOT get into the discussion of whether or not you should keep him because that's a personal decision every dog owner needs to make for herself. I don't have any advice per say because I haven't gone through it. I will ask if you've contacted your adoption group and/or your vet. They may be able to help you and give you some advice and training tips. Also, don't be afraid to muzzle when you're out walking and/or when someone comes into the house. My gut tells me your boy is protecting you.
  22. I just want to clarify that he's only aggressive with other kids coming over to the house? He's fine with YOUR kids? I think he's protecting your family. My suggestion would be to muzzle when you know you're going to have other kids/guests over. I'm not an expert as I haven't had to deal with this but you should be holding his collar when the kids come in and have them calmly meet him at the door. You may have them offer him treats to show that they're not a threat. I would absolutely muzzle the entire time the other kids are there, at least for the time being. If it continues to be a problem you may have to crate. I'm sure others who have more experience with this. It's absolutely fine to muzzle as long as needed. Remember, they can eat and drink through the muzzle. Congratulations on your new addition.
  23. Chattering is a great sign. Glad to hear he's headed home.
  24. Well, I bet she's feeling pretty pleased with herself isn't she? 😉 I'm guessing no ill effects since the treats were made specifically for dogs. She may have some loose poop from eating so many at once but I'm guessing she'll be fine. Interested to hear what others think.
  25. Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll try it. Can't hurt, might help. 😏
