  1. This is exactly how I feel about it. I say let her be happy. In 7 years, the food she is on now is the only one she has ever eaten with joy. I hate to take it away from her. Thank you for sharing I stared at it in the vets office today, but I have never heard of a dog that would eat it, and it is horrendously expensive. I would buy it if she wasn't picky, but I know her well. I did see Royal Canin at Chewy.com. I have never heard of that brand before.
  2. I took Ruby to the vet today and among a couple other things, he said she has low kidney function, and it is probably time to change her food. Ruby is very picky, and the food she is on now she actually wolfs it down, first food ever. They recommend Science Diet. I have not heard good things about the Hills Science Diet kidney food, but does anyone have a tried and true one that your Grey loves ? Do you worry about the treats you feed ? She has been getting chicken jerky strips, Bison jerky and some dental chews. Usually one to two a day. Thanks
  3. thank you everyone, I will look into the places mentioned. I do plan on getting the Deradexx 100 mg and splitting them, but I may need to increase to 50 mg a day. I got a call from the vet tonight and he had just received the lab work from our past vet, and he is worried about Ruby's kidneys and wants to repeat the labs in one month. I know the Deradexx can be harmful to her kidneys, so now we need to decide if we should give them to her if they help, or not give them due to the kidney issue. I personally think quality of life is better than quantity, but my husband feels the opposite of course. I would prefer she be comfortable and free from pain and restlessness than live a few more months. The new vet is very aware of the greyhound kidney levels, as he brought it up to me before I could ask him about it. We have known about her kidneys for a while, so that came as no surprise. We were always told it was nothing to worry about yet.
  4. I took Ruby in to the vet today to see why she has been having trouble getting into the car, and she has been very restless at night, spinning circles, moaning (slight) and trouble sleeping. The Dr said her hind end is getting weak. She has trembling if she stands very long also. She is now 10 1/2, and he said that is considered geriatric, and most need some comfort measures. She also needs a dental, but he wants to do labs in one month to make sure she is doing well on the new meds. He gave samples today of Synovi G4, Deramaxx 25 mg, and Hills Prescription Diet dental chews. I have enough for 2 weeks, and he said I should know if they are going to help her. Can anyone tell me where they have found the Deramaxx the cheapest ? He said he will prescribe the 100 mg tabs and I can split into fourths. The Synovi G4 I found at Chewy.com, but did not find the dental chews. They sell them at the office too, but wondered if anyone has a better option. My poor girl, I hope this helps her rest a bit better.
  5. I have no experience with this personally, but what about washable diapers for her at night ? Poor sweetie, I am sure you are both stressed out over this. Sending hugs
  6. This is good to know, thank you. I wondered if it was just puppy phases, as I know the breed she is are normally very snuggly. She doesn't like to leave our side, so I see some hope for the future. If not, that's OK too. We lucked out with her behaviors, she has been an easy puppy so far.
  7. Thank you.......she is absolutely perfect just how she is, but I am the one wanting a snuggle bunny. Maybe she will grow into it as she ages as suggested. I hope so. I just dropped her off to be spayed, and of course she threw up in the car on the way there. Made it hard to leave her there looking confused. Love her.
  8. Thanks krissy, you always have such great advice and wisdom........Jesse isn't grumpy when being held, but she does jump off after just a couple of minutes usually. We let her do her thing and do not try to hang onto her when she wants down, I just wish she wanted "up" a bit more.
  9. I know this might be a silly question, but I know nothing about puppies and their behavior. I have always had older dogs, so learning as we go. Jesse is such a sweetheart. She is doing really well, starting her 2nd set of classes next week at the Humane Society, and seems to be a happy, busy little girl. She is 4 1/2 months already. My question is, she is not very snuggly any more, and I am wondering if that is normal puppy behavior because they are so busy ? She will gladly come romp around with us, follows us wherever we go, bring us the ball to throw, etc.... After having a grey, and Ruby not liking any kind of snuggles, I was hoping the puppy would like to sit on our laps when not playing. She prefers to go lay down in her crate, or flop on the floor when she wears out. Is that normal behavior for a puppy ? Does snuggliness (yes, I made that up) come with age ? She seems to love both my husband and I, but prefers snoozing elsewhere. I heard prior to getting her that male puppies tend to be more snuggly than females, but I also heard it the other way around. She sleeps in her crate at night, but happily lays down in the afternoons and snoozes on our bed. Also, any happy thoughts and prayers you can spare for her tomorrow I appreciate it. She is being spayed first thing in the morning. .
  10. Today when out she growled at a store clerk, then the clerk came to pet her and she was happy. 3 other people came over to her and she was happy to see them all. I wonder if her growling is more of a "talking" instead of aggression ? She is always happy to be petted and fussed over.
  11. We started taking her out amongst people at age 9 weeks, as soon as we got her. We did not let her down on the ground except in our backyard. She went to Lowes, Home Depot, the park where kids would pet her, etc.....As soon as she had the last set of shots, we started taking her for walks, to the park, neighborhood, to the farm stands, etc..... now she goes everywhere with us. We have a rabies and distemper issue where we live, and both vets, and the lady we got her from said to not let her down until those shots were finished. I know that some people here did not agree, but when my vet says he doesn't let his dogs down, I wanted to follow that advice. She now barks at anyone new that comes into our home, and I am OK with that. As soon as we introduce her to the stranger, she stops and is friendly. I have my bag of treats ready today, so will start giving them as soon as I see something that might trigger her. Thank you for the help, I really appreciate it. I will be vigilant and see if we can get this to stop.
  12. Thank you NeylasMom. we have been taking her everywhere with us, allowing everyone to pet her and her to explore things. She has been on our vacation with us and has been to every store, RV park play area, etc.... I have not been doing the treats though. Can you explain a bit more about when I give the treats ? I understand moving her away from the situation, but not when to treat to make her to be OK with things. She has been going to the worst training class in the world, but will be going to some other ones as soon as we get home. I took her to Petco, and the training is non existant. There are only 2 other dogs in the class, and the teacher is uneducated. The manager is refunding our money to us. I plan on taking her to the Humane Society one and another ran by a private facility that also does day care. Jesse is super friendly to other dogs and people if she is close to them, but not when they are approaching or walking by, I want to get her growling turned around as soon as I can. We have been telling her "shush" and slightly yanking on her halter a bit, but not enough to make us scary.
  13. Our Jesse is 4 months old now and she has recently decided to growl at anyone she see's, the rain, the wind, the bear in our campground last night (yep-a bit scary). She will then let out a small bark. We are hoping to not have a little yappy dog, and am wondering what we should do to prevent that from happening. Should we try to get her to stop the low growl and the bark ? Let her growl as a warning ? She is not going after anything, as she is scared to death if a dog barks back, or a person comes her way. If we are holding her, she loves all people, but not when she is down and wandering. I am new to puppies, and Ruby only growls when Jesse is bugging her. Ideas ?
  14. Now that we have 2 dogs, Ruby tends to want to wander the car, unlike before when she would stand still and stare out the window. In doing research, I also realized the danger of having dogs unsecured in the car. Eek ! I have been looking on Amazon and Drs. Foster and Smith, and they have several options for hooking them in. Does anyone have one that they use and love ? I want ones that hook to their harnesses and not crate them. Also, is there a way to hook the puppy in so she can't chew on the seatbelt ? Thank you
  15. My ex was bitten by a Brown Recluse and it required 2 mini surgeries to remove the dead skin away from it. It left a divet in his leg about an inch deep. They also did debridement prior to the surgery. He was on antibiotics for 3+ weeks. Praying all goes well for your sweet pup.
  16. Thank you everyone for the replies. Jesse is much better today, still a little sleepier than normal, but she has days like this. I am going to spread the shots out next time, good advice.
  17. OH POOR LUNA...........Hoping that healing takes place quickly.
  18. Our 16 week old puppy had her final set of shots today, and she received the rabies vaccine. Tonight she is very lethargic, but breathing well and very responsive. She did not touch her dinner tonight, and just drank a tiny amount of water. Gums look normal. I have Googled info and it says it is normal to have lethargy, but I just need to hear from others that this happened to them too and all was OK. The closest EVet is about 30 minutes away, and I will gladly take her if anyone thinks I should. She is very snuggly and has been sleeping on my lap since 5 PM tonight Thanks
  19. OK, thanks. I don't think it is from over bathing, she has just had one bath since we got her, and that was in the beginning. I am not clear on the rice/boiled meat plan ? Is that to stop the toots ? Her poops are firm and easy to pick up, and she has tested negative for worms 3 X's, and had the series of worming when we brought her home. She is also on a topical for worms and fleas. I know that all of the foods she has been fed so far do not contain corn, soy or (??? drawing a blank). I liked the Costco one, but she just doesn't seem to care for it. I don't want another picky dog like Ruby, but I also want her to like what she is given.
  20. Our puppy is 15 weeks now and doing really well. Such a fun addition to our family, and Ruby is slowly coming around. Having some food issues though. The place we got her was feeding Blue Buffalo, so we got a bag of that. She picks out all the little blueberry looking things and flings them on the floor. The vet said to switch, as the little things are the vitamins and minerals, and she makes a mess. Then we bought the Costco Grain Free Puppy, which she is not a fan of, and we are having trouble getting her to eat even the bare minimum suggested amount. The new vet gave us 2 bags of Science Diet Puppy, one grain free, the other not. She loves it, and wolfs it down, but the gas is peeling the paint off the walls. We did mix them to get her used to each new food slowly. Her gas started with the Science Diet, and got worse on the one with grain. She also seems to be scratching a lot on the Science Diet brand. So, I am in the market for a delicious and all one shape puppy food. Preferably one that is small kibble, as she is tiny. Should we go grain free ? Anything to stay away from ? Anything to look for ? New at this puppy thing, and there are hundreds to choose from. Would one with salmon oil help her itching ? The Science Diet is chicken, so not sure if that is the problem. Poops are perfect on all the foods so far. Help !
  21. Thanks, I will have to get some...........and I was kidding about the bandage
