  1. Jesse was acting lethargic this afternoon and did not come out of her bed when we would enter the room. I ended up taking her to the emergency vet, who did an exam and X-ray. He found she has an enlarged esophagus, and she had a lot of gas in her bowels. He could see the food she was given this morning, and is worried she may have eaten some thread, string, stuffing.........which is likely as she is a tag chewer. They are going to repeat her x-ray tonight at 10 PM, to see if the food has emptied out of her tummy, and if not, it looks like she may have surgery for a blockage. She is drinking water well, and they kept her and have her on an IV to keep her hydrated. Prayers and good thoughts please.
  2. She has kept the chicken down for 3 hours, so I just gave her a large T of Cottage cheese and she gobbled that down. I was doing some researching and it says poodles can have sensitive tummies and that cottage cheese and yogurt can calm them down. Hoping she keeps it down, she loved it .
  3. Great advice from all of you. No, she has not eaten anything that she shouldn't have, as we vacuum daily (thanks to our Ruby Grey who sheds like a woolly mammoth) and she stays right by our side. I do think she suffers nausea, and has since we got her. She vomits easily, and almost always does in the car. We took her for a drive yesterday afternoon, and luckily she didn't vomit. This morning she would not take a bite of her kibble again. She has peed and pooped twice this morning, so I don't feel there is a blockage. I fed her 4 small bites of chicken, which she gobbled down. Now hoping it stays down. She is wild and crazy playing this morning, so she has good energy. If she throws up the chicken, we will go to the ER vet today. If not, I will be taking her in tomorrow for a check up and blood work. See what he thinks. I collected her poop from this morning, but am not sure how long I can keep it refrigerated. If she goes again, I will grab a fresher sample. Wondering if it could be worms that cause nausea ? She is on a monthly worming pill, so I am thinking that isn't it, but I have no idea.
  4. We have a 8 month old half poodle, half American Eskimo puppy who has all of a sudden decided to not eat every now and then. I talked to the vet and he said to try offering her other foods, as she has to eat regularly while still developing. This morning she didn't eat a thing, so I offered her canned dog food, and she didn't take a bite. I fed her again early afternoon, and again, not a bite. Tonight I tried her kibble again, nothing. She is drinking, behavior is normal, pooping and peeing normally. This happened a few days ago too, but she ended up throwing up in the afternoon, so I assumed her tummy was upset. She has done this about 5 days in the last couple of months. She got half of a small treat for potty. Total of 3 mini treats all day. Is this normal for a puppy ? She weighs about 14 lbs, so I get worried she is going to starve to death. How long is OK to wait for her to eat ? She does tend to have a sensitive tummy, and I know that she has not eaten anything she shouldn't. Ideas ? advice ? We are new to puppies.
  5. This is exactly My Ruby. Gotta love those tall cats.
  6. RIP Allen.......you are a beautiful boy
  7. They did not give Ruby the 24 hour pain shot due to her kidneys. We now have Tramadol, but she hasn't acted like anything is hurting today. She has healed very well.
  8. I totally agree that there had to be something for kidney patients in pain. I called this morning and she is getting Tramadol 50 mg. I told them I thought it was crazy to leave a dog in pain. This morning she ate all of her dinner, which was boiled rice, small chicken chunks, and 2 cans of dog food mixed in. She ate all I gave her and is now sound asleep. Her mouth looks so clean and pearly white teeth. I don't know if she is still in any pain, but I am going to get the prescription to have just in case. She let me look in her mouth easily this morning. My sweet girl.........it is so hard to see them suffer.
  9. I agree and am going to call them in the morning. She is calm now and has eaten 2 small meals of canned food with no problems. She seems like she is back on earth here once again after a long 6 hour nap. The whining has stopped for now, and she is back to sleep. How much Gabapentin or Tramadol would she take for pain ? I am not familiar with either medication.
  10. Yes, he is up on all of that. He is guessing it is from the 3 abscessed teeth, but will check it again in 4 weeks. Ruby is home and was whining very loudly for about 2 hours. I finally gave her a small amount of canned food and her antibiotic, and she is now sleeping soundly. I will give her a tiny bit more of food before bed if she keeps dinner down. She is still staring off when awake, but no drooling or bleeding that I can see. They did not give her any pain meds due to her kidneys, poor girl. I know she must still be in some pain.
  11. Thank you Don. I got a copy of the labs this morning when I dropped her off, but they just show a chart with ranges, and a few of hers being in the low or high column. She has been at the vet since 8 AM, no word yet, but they planned on giving her a day of IV fluids. I sure hope this infection in her mouth is the problem. I am not ready for my girl to be sick. I did some Googling and of course scared myself.........I need to stop doing that.
  12. I need some information about Rubys labs. I do not have numbers, but will get them tomorrow when I take Ruby in for her dental. The vet called today to tell me that Ruby has low protein, and it is not coming from her urine. He said it may be from her 2 abscessed teeth, or it may be caused by something like a cancerous tumor in her spleen, liver, etc.. He also said her red blood cells are not round and plump, but are "spherical" in shape. Again, he said it may be from the bad teeth. She is going to have a dental tomorrow and will be losing a few teeth. We agreed that she will receive a full day of IV fluids to ensure her kidney function is OK. It tested slightly low, but the exact same as it was 2 months ago, and 1 year ago. I am hoping these weird labs are from the teeth. One of them is bulging out horribly and if you push pus comes out. Poor girl has to be in pain. She still eats hard kibble with gusto. Not sure how. She is not on antibiotics, but will be started on them in the morning. Wanting to know if anyone has had a dog with a low protein and what caused it ? Ideas about the red blood cells ? Does it sound like a bad infection ? After talking over the ideas, we decided to get the dental done, then recheck her labs in 4 weeks. If the protein is still low, we will do a abdominal ultrasound. I do not feel it is OK to make her wait on those teeth.
  13. I have no advice Sheila, just hugs......that sounds so scary
  14. Ruby likes Himalayan Yak chews, and so does the new puppy. They last forever too. I also give Ruby some greenie type bones I got from Target called Minties. Bully sticks are good too, but they make Ruby fart so bad I can't stand her. Jesse loves an old antler I bought for Ruby many moons ago. Ruby never showed any interest in it.
  15. Good to know, thank you. Yes, I will be cutting the kibble for Ruby, and I will check out the link. Thank you for your suggestion
  16. I have been trying to do this tonight, but haven't found a direct match yet. I ran across Canidae and am wondering if Ruby would like it, but I would give her half kibble and half white bread or rice. She loves those 2 foods a lot, especially bread. The vet did not say what stage, but I think it's early. We have been told this before, and her labs will be repeated in December, so I will know to ask the stage at that time.
  17. Does anyone here feed Canidae All Life Stages ? I have been searching thru dog foods tonight and found this one that I could feed to my puppy and to Ruby. It seems to get good reviews on Amazon, but that doesn't really tell me much. I would love only having to store one bag for both my greyhound and my mixed breed puppy. What do you think ?
  18. It sounds like others have been given the bum a time or two. A friend said it is a trust thing, that she is showing me she trusts me by turning her back to me during play. She is silly
  19. Our 5 month old puppy does a strange thing every time we are playing. She loves to play wrestle before bed and before we lay down in the afternoons. During these play times, she constantly turns her back and puts her butt in my face. Luckily she doesn't toot, but it happens every time. She is happy and playful when she does this. Does it mean anything, or is it just a quirk ?
  20. Our puppy (5 months), who we thought was potty trained, peed all over the new rug we laid down in the living room 2 days ago. She will go 3-4 weeks, then randomly pee. I had taken her outside less than 30 minutes before she peed. I trusted her too soon. She fools me every time. Sorry about your bed. That sucks.
  21. Sounds like Royal Canin is awful too ? I am thinking about adding no salt broth, 1/2 of her normal food, and maybe white rice or bread, which she loves. I will stop the jerky treats, but I don't think we are going to do much else. She is pretty content right now. My husband said this morning " so, it sounds like we will only have Ruby a couple more years, is that right?". I think it just dawned on him that we don't get to keep her forever. So sad.
