  1. Another success story! When Miss Kapow came to us, her stools were liquid. After worming they were a little firmer, but still very soft pudding poo. I started feeding the beets and carrots on April 2. Today, she pooped on leash for the first time, with nice firm, easy to pick up poo. No scrubbing the grass for leftovers. YAY! I ordered a 2 lb package of each beets and carrots, and mixed together. Beets have twice to three times the volume of carrots, and rehydrate much faster. I have found the hotter the water, the faster things rehydrate. Miss Kapow is getting 2 rounded T of the beet/carrot mix, rehydrated with 2 t. coconut oil and 3/4 C. hot water split between two meals. I make her mix up at night before bedtime, so it's ready for us to scoop out and feed in the morning. Now, a question. Will I need to adjust the amount of beet/carrot mix as time passes? I do not want her to become constipated.
  2. Got my order of carrots and beets today. Mixed up a batch, and will feed to both fosters tonight. Sure hope it helps with Miss Kapow's loose stools!
  3. Sweet Pea had the same problem in the last year of her life. She would poo in her sleep, and sometimes the poo would just fall out when she was walking around.
  4. I've had dogs refuse fresh chicken feet. Mine prefer dried ones.
  5. My sister picks up shed antlers when she's out in the woods, scouting.
  6. I have several pounds of chicken feet. How long does it take to dehydrate them, and what temperature should I use? TIA!
  7. Diane from Burpdogs kindly introduced us to Stella & Chewys when Missy Pea was losing interest in her regular food. We found crumbling a Dandy Lamb medallion into her regular food helped get her to eat.
  8. I am so sorry to hear of George's passing. Please know you are in my thoughts.
  9. I'm so sorry to learn of Poodle's loss, Pam. Goodness, what a life he had! I always enjoyed his tales!
  10. I don't have the information in front of me, but think although Pet Armor's primary infredient is fipronil, it does not have s-methoprene, which repels ticks.
  11. It depends on the dog. Our Missy Pea, who has since gone to the bridge, had a problem with her storm meds a few years ago. Vet clinic kept her overnight. During the night, Pea chewed out her IV line and broke out of her kennel. When the staff came in the next morning, Pea greeted them in the lobby. Also in the lobby was the clinic rabbit, Bun-Bun, happy and healthy. The staff was very apologetic about Pea's escape. I asked about Bun-Bun, and they looked at me with confusion. Then I told them what a good racer Pea had been, and they understood why I asked about the bunny!
  12. In humans, white lines across the nails are calles Lees Lines. They are a symptom of exposure to heavy metals, and are commonly seen in cases of arsenic poisioning.
  13. Missy Pea broke her right front ulna and radius on the farm. She was not treated. Don't ask me why, I don't know. The bones slid over her elbow, and fused to the humerus. There was a lump where the bones fused, and she walked with a noticeable limp. She could run like the wind!
  14. Have you tried any of the refrigerated foods from Freshpet Select? Sweet Pea liked the roll food, and the refrigrated kibble style food (chicken and spinach) was even better! Diane from Burpdogs sent me some freeze dried patties made by Stella & Chewy. Pea loved those, too. Her favorite was the Dandy Lamb Dinner. We also used shredded cheese, lots of it!
  15. While you are waiting for test results to come back, it might help to use disposable bedpads on your furniture and dog beds. Find them in the incontinence section at big box and drugstores. We used three XL pads across the couch, two on the loeseat, and put a blanket over the pads to help hold them in place. They do rustle some when stepped on, but Missy Pea and the cat herd didn't seem to mind.
  16. Have her checked for UTI's. The vet may recommend Proin. It certainly helped Missy Pea.
  17. Thank you so much to all of you for your kind words and thoughts. I really appreciate them. The house is so empty without Missy Pea. Every time I go into the kitchen I feel as though the gate should be closed, but there's no one to eat up the kitteh food. Bedtime is the hardest. The last thing I did before bed was taking Pea out. Eventually things will get better, but for now, there's a Missy Pea sized hole in my heart.
  18. Our Missy Pea went to the Bridge today. Sweet Pea came to us February 2, 2009 as a long term foster. She came to HGA from a brood farm with a badly healed broken leg. She went through quite a few homes due to extreme thunderphobia and general quirkiness. When DH learned her story he said she had been through enougn, this was her forever home. Pea raced at Gulf Greyhound Park in Texas, and was the Night of Stars IX champion on May 11, 2002. After her racing career ended, she came to Iowa as a broodie. We will miss her more than I can say. Run free, Missy Pea.
  19. Nancy, do you still make the checkered flag collars?
  20. Pam is right. Gelatin is made from animal by-products, primarily hooves and hides.
  21. The rules are different for outside cats than inside ones. When I brought a stray inside, she never quite understood that the dog that chased her in the yard would let her eat her (dog's) food in the house. Definitely go to the vet. Cat scratch fever and cat bites are no joke.
