  1. I think the length of time is too long to start with.
  2. Some are less tolerant of the heat than others. Early morning and late evening will be your friend, I would only take him out to potty in between those times.
  3. Welcome! Where in Ontario? FYI, a lot of us use Photobucket for our photos (then you just paste the IMG code into your message here) or you can also link them from Facebook. Both ways show the actual photo in the message, not just links.
  4. I'm not clear on how this is happening. I also don't allow slack to hang and I use a 4' leash, generally. I use a 6' leash when we're camping and I want her to be able to explore into the edges (without me having to follow her in) but even still, I keep it held up out of the way. I have the loop around my right wrist and run it through my left hand, down to the dog at my left knee. This lets my left hand pull it back/pay it out, as necessary.
  5. I successfully use ladies' trouser socks. They easily go above the joint, you vet wrap around and then flip the top of the sock down over the vet wrap. Foot is protected and so is the vet wrap.
  6. To help combat the greasiness of the topical, I have learned to apply it in many... many... many spots. I find that helps a lot. A couple of days later, I'll also use a made-for-dogs "dry shampoo and scenting" powder, rub it in, brush it out. That helps a lot, too.
  7. I use K9 Advantix II (it covers more tick species than any others). I've also used Revolution and Advantage. Advantix II is the "greasiest" one of them all, I find, but we travel into the US a lot and I want the tick protection. A lot of people also use the Preventic collar along with a product which just does fleas.
  8. Farewell, sweet Maddie. It was my privilege to have met you (and petted you!). <3
  9. That's what I believe and was taught, too, that weight-bearing bones are not to be given and neither are those smoked pet store ones. I like giving treats of raw (frozen or defrosted) turkey necks, duck necks and beef neck vertebrae.
  10. I've recently seen a few stories here and there, about dogs getting their jaws stuck in bones.
  11. Mine wears a collar once a week or so, for therapy dog visits. The rest of the time, she's naked. And the front of her throat is bare. So I don't think it's always collar rub but even so, I don't worry about it.
  12. There was a thread recently on FB GT, discussing kibble storage. I don't know how you store yours but if you dump the kibble into a plastic container and don't wash it out every time, the oil will go rancid and can make your pup unwell. Some people reported gas and soft poop, clearing up as fast as one day after they cleaned the container and got fresh food. I put the kibble into the container IN the bag, trim off the top (with the codes/dates) and stuff the cut bit down the side along with the receipt. Anyway, just thought I'd mention this in case it may be a factor for you. Good luck and I hope you figure it out fast.
  13. Same thing happens at our weekly greyhound runs. They poop a few times and it gets pretty gross.
  14. Mine came with fur. She lost it over the summer, regrew it for fall (just in time for a professional photo shoot) and then lost it again. It has never regrown. Sometimes the spots fill in a bit -- it comes and goes. But she will always have a bare tummy, a bare neck front and two bare spots on her butt. It's the lay of the land. I know for a fact that her collar has nothing to do with it because 95% of the time she's nekkid.
  15. There's lots of things other than rawhides... raw (defrosted or frozen) turkey necks or duck necks are good. As are raw (defrosted or frozen) beef neck vertebrae. I will never feed the white bleached rawhide but I've been known to occasionally give a pressed rawhide bone under supervision. Sometimes, it's just so much more convenient if you're traveling or visiting than whipping a raw turkey neck out of your purse, LOL.
  16. It's amazing how, as time goes by, you'll react differently to things. You'll get used to blood, "open wound management" and all kinds of fun things. Glad that it wasn't anything serious.
  17. I'm like Bean Scotch -- when a dog is new, treats are earned/rewarded. One non-grey I had, ALWAYS had to earn her treats. She was a... very forceful personality and I always had to keep on top of things. With Summer, now that she's well settled in, she doesn't have to earn all her treats. Bits of human leftovers she just gets but she "does" things for dog treats. I also still use treats for rewards, such as crossing scary floors in new environments. Treats given to her by seniors during therapy dog visits are always just free.
  18. *I* wouldn't eat it but it's not like it's rotten or anything. The taste and texture would be icky for us. But the dog probably won't care.
  19. K9 Advantix or K9 Advantix II. They cover various ticks.
  20. Revolution (topical) does both fleas and heartworm. I used it on my previous non-greys for years and for one year on my grey. I would still be using it except that it doesn't do ticks. I don't have ticks here but for the past few years, we have started traveling a lot more, including into the US. Now I use Heartgard Plus along with K9 Advantix II.
  21. Lots of people mix kibble. If it makes you feel better and he does well on the combination... go for it!
  22. As far as I'm aware, prong and pinch collars are the same thing. And yup, I've used it (adopted a 10yo boy from the shelter who had zero leash manners but he was too large and strong for me to teach using a regular collar -- plus he ignored all corrections -- so I trained him using a prong collar. It worked great and he became the best boy ever!). It can be useful if you know what you're doing. But on a greyhound???? I wouldn't do it.
  23. I wouldn't stop on such a short trip unless I absolutely had to.
