  1. NeylasMom - I hope things worked out for your pup. PLEASE - what is the correct contact email for Dr Couto??? thank you
  2. Yes, Drontal with food. Will discuss this with our vet. Our girl is 4.5 and fairly active on a normal day, with the additional Drontal-related hyperactivity it can be a bit much.
  3. Yes, I agree with you that this protocol will work. I should have clarified that we gave only the Drontal Plus - 2 weeks later we applied the Advantage Multi. Our hound got back to “normal” the next day after Drontal but her appetite was off for a couple days. At least knowing your hound was a little more hyper makes me think it’s just a limited reaction.
  4. No other reactions to anything else (so far) - very strange. I plan to discuss with our vet. Drontal with Adv Multi is very effective for hookworms so I hope we can work something out.
  5. We have no problem getting our girl to eat the Drontal Plus tablet - BUT - it makes her really hyper, pacing, nervous for approx 24 hrs. And for a couple days afterward she has a weird body odor. Any others have this happen, any reactions to Drontal?
  6. Congrats on your new fur baby! We sprinkled PlaqueOff directly on our girls food. Apparently it tastes good because no one has ever refused to eat. It does help, we believe. It is not cheap but we felt it was worth it. For now, however, we are not giving it to our dogs. We are seeking answers as to why the product looks & smells very different than it has over the past 2 years. Still no corporate response from Proden. Im also concerned that the company does not allow returns or refunds of their product. A company that doesnt stand behind its product is concerning.
  7. We have been buying PlaqueOff via Amazon for a while and have been generally happy with the results. Lately, Amazon user comments have noted a change in the material composition of the product. We agree, it does not look or smell the same. There is no product info indicating a change in formula. Our correspondence to the manufacturer has gone unanswered. Any Greytalkers have knowledge or recent experience with this product?
  8. Thanks for the information links, very interesting and helpful. As info, for several months now, Ive also been giving our girl, Wilma, Proviable DC. When her symptoms first presented, the vet gave her B12 shot and pills. She stopped them when she felt Wilma had stabilized. I plan to inquire about the possibly/or need of resuming that on our next visit.
  9. Hi Maryjane- I am very interested in what your grey savvy Vet had to say about the correlation between hookworms and PLE and IBD! Our girl is being treated for PLE. She has had serious hooks for past 2.5 years despite Herculean efforts to eradicate them. Last Nov, she rapidly declined to a very weakened state: low Protein & Albumin levels, lethargy, diarrhea, swollen belly, pain. From vibrant & active to full. Rather suddenly. We were referred to an Internist who, following blood tests/exams, put her on low-fat Hills or Royal Csnin prescription diet, prednisone, and later Azathioprine immunosuppressant (when Protein wasn't improving fast enough). Note: It bothers me to now recall the Vet did not test for hooks/parasites during the first 3 months she was seeing her. I dont think she connected the possibilities. After a year of clean results, I frankly didnt either. Once my girl became stable & while trying to figure out what really caused this, I insisted that a fecal test be done: hooks & coccidia found! She was treated with accelerated Panacur, Adv Multi, HG Plus and has responded very well. Weve now had 2 clear fecal exams - were hopeful but weve been down this road before. Hoping this time we conquered the larval leak as well. Her Vet thinks the hookworms could have been a contributing factor but shes not certain. My girl is doing great right now. Were still following the Vets recommendations; her Prednisone dosage has been reduced to .5mg every other day, alternating days with Azathioprine 50mg. Were watching for any negative change. Dont know if this will be a forever situation that well need to manage - but were afraid to change anything and possibly cause our girl to backslide. Thanks for sharing your experience, not a lot of people are familiar with PLE. I will be discussing this further with my Vet.
  10. CGS If you can SEE worms, then they are NOT hookworms. Probably tapeworms, roundworms. Take a stool sample to vet and get it checked out. Its not unusual for hounds to have worms & parasites there are many types. Good luck.
  11. Also... want to thank everyone for contributing their personal hookworm experiences. Sharing info is the best way to learn. I am now wondering if HG+ is no longer effective. Our girl, Wilma 5 yrs old, is now on both HG+ and Advantage Multi - she has had hooks off/onsince we got her 2.5 yrs ago - and we are very careful with her potties. New Question: Could hookworms be the cause of low protein levels? Wilma has been riding the low end for greyhounds since November when protein & albumin dropped very low and she was lethargic & gassy. Her vet is treating her for PLE: prednisone, immunosuppressant, Pepcid, low-fat food - though Im suspicious her problem has been related to the hooks all along. Last month she was positive again for hooks and coccidia. She eats well, poops are good, no other symptoms. Frustrating.
  12. You can also use the poop bag like a glove - wait for your greyhound to get into position, then place your glove hand under and catch it all. Unless it is liquidy diarrhea, it is easy to catch even soft poos. Nothing hits the ground! Also less conspicuous (than a paper plate) if you must walk your dogs away from home, like I do.
  13. Want to clarify the Panacur repeat timing - I am getting conflicting info. Do the subsequent treatments start 3 weeks after the last dose, or from the first dose? Always told the last dose but now Im questioning it. Thanks!!!
  14. Just received refill from our vet at $2.64/tablet because we needed it immediately. I have seen it available from online suppliers for less and plan to go that route. It appears to really be a miracle drug for our girl - no more chewing & licking her feet. How expensive is "a bit expensive" ?
  15. THANKS everyone for sharing your experiences with APOQUEL. Our vet prescribed our Wilma 16mg twice/day for 2 weeks - then recheck appointment. Already I am amazed that after only 1 day Wilma has stopped licking her inflamed paws! It truly is a miracle drug! Happy New Yesr greyhound friends!
  16. We gave 3 rounds of Panacur for 5 days, plus monthly Advantage Multi, Heartgard, Nexgard, and daily Proviable DC probiotic. After much persistence (3 attempts) it finally eradicated the hooks. My thanks to our dear greyhound friends who shared their experiences and dosing protocols.
  17. Our 3.5 year old grey, Wilma, is suffering from contact dermatitis on all 4 paws. She is miserable; licks constantly resulting in us putting on her muzzle with poop guard much too frequently. We want to try APOQUEL to give Wilma some relief. From my research, it sounds like a good solution. I am very interested in hearing real life experiences from greyhound parents about how this drug worked for your grey, where you buy it, other tips. Any and all info and experiences are welcome. Thanks in advance!
  18. Just curious - What instructions does your vet give you for the NIGHT & MORNING before a dental procedure is done? We have had conflicting info from various vets - each seem to have a preferred method. The latest is: No food after 8PM, water is okay. (Some vets have said the more water the better prior to the procedure...) What is the procedure you have followed for your grey? Thanks!
  19. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I am interested in the various products greyhound owners have chosen. There are so many!!
  20. Our 9 year old greyhound has stiffness when squatting to poop. She is mildly active, likes to walk & trot, and does not act like she is in pain - but who knows. I am considering a supplement to keep her joints as limber as possible. Looking at Dasuquin as a possibility. Other than price, is there any downside to Dasuquin in your experience? thanks-
  21. Hello greyhound friends! The Murray Avenue Apothecary Corn Cream products ARE working and making a huge difference for our Lunar Star, female, 11 years old. As background... Lunar has had pesky corns on both front paws on and off for the past 2 years. This winter they became very painful, she limped badly, and began to refuse walking as a result. Last year, at the Mountain Hounds event, we learned about greyhound corns. Some folks were hulling corns and someone else mentioned the Murray Avenue products as a possible solution. This spring, when Lunar Star became so miserable, we decided to give it a try - after reading everything we could find and talking to everyone possible (we are huge skeptics!). We started the treatments approx June 9 and are following the directions the best we can with our hectic schedules: daily treatments at a minimum, always twice a day on the weekend or days off. It is SO worth it! We definitely see progress. In roughly 1-1/2 months, Lunar's corns have come up to the surface; a small one dropped off, one is shrinking, and the larger ones appear to be sloughing off. Her pads are looking healthier, too. We are going to keep up with the Murray Avenue Corn Cream treatment and see where it leads - she still has 3 good sized corns yet to resolve. We have also decided we will NOT file, dremel, or attempt to dig out the corns at this point. (Let me add, we have a townhome without a fenced yard; potty walks are always on a leash going down the street. To ease her pain and lameness, Lunar always wears a Thera-Paw on each front foot when she goes outside. She has become accustomed to wearing them, and even welcomes them now! She still has corns and associated pain, but at least she is able and willing to walk - evenly and without limping - when she wears her "boots". They are great conversation starters, too!) As I said, we were skeptical at first - but now we can't say enough about the results we are seeing in our sweet girl, Lunar Star! I hope you give it a try and have good success, too. 23. Her nails are trimmed, so I know that is not the cause.
