  1. There are Fromm formulas with more calories. Looks like Pork & Peas has the most. http://frommfamily.com/products/four-star/dog/dry/#pork-and-peas-recipe
  2. Sounds like normal new houndie stuff and you’re handling it well. Their signs that they need to go out can be very subtle. In the early days with my Lila, if she was standing up she needed to go out.
  3. Oh, poor Joe! I hope he's on the mend and is home with you soon.
  4. No advice, but that's a very nice looking pack you've got there!
  5. I have noticed that Lila does not used her paws as much as other dogs. She uses them to hold a chew and she’s got the paw-whap or wave for more petting down to a fine art, but that’s about all. She does not seem to know that she can use her paws to pull something closer to her or to move an object. She does however, like to “hold hands” and will reach out and put a paw on me if I’m nearby.
  6. I gave Lila her kibble without water once to see what would happen - She chewed one mouthful then went back to her usual gulp and swallow technique which was followed by much hacking and coughing. She doesn't drink much either, so this way I know she's getting some water in her.
  7. I dremmel when Lila is laying down and the dew claw that is facing “up” is super easy, but the one facing “down” is nearly impossible. You might have to keep your clippers handy and wait for Nova to flip over to get the other side.
  8. Fromm has a lamb and cranberry treat that looks pretty close to the food you're using. No fish, but they do have chicken fat. http://frommfamily.com/products/four-star/dog/treats/#lamb-with-cranberry
  9. A quick internet search says yes, acorns are toxic to dogs. Not like it will kill him immediately, but will cause stomach upset and eating a large quantity can cause kidney disease. Seems to be more of the toxins in green acorns than brown ones. But the more immediate concern seems to be with a blockage if they are swallowed whole. This is a good summary of everything I was seeing. http://www.southarundelvet.com/sites/site-2440/documents/acorns.pdf
  10. My Lila loves to lick a wet washcloth. I suspect that's kind of an odd obsession, but it might help to keep his mouth from drying out.
  11. I was in almost exactly the same situation a month ago. Lila is going to be 8 in a couple weeks and had not had a dental since her spay four years ago. Obviously, she survived that and a quick, light anesthesia to sew her up after she was attacked. The vet explained the whole process to me and knowing there would be someone monitoring her at all times helped me feel a little better. She had her two front lower incisors removed, as expected, and she did just fine. She seemed normal when I picked her up but once we got home I could tell she was still stoned - panting and crazy eyes. She just took a big drink of water and feel asleep. I fed her canned food that evening, a few small portions, and she was back to her normal kibble for breakfast. It's normal to worry, but Joe will be fine.
  12. My Lila just had a dental and I asked the vet what she recommends for chewing to help keep teeth clean. She recommended the CET rawhides. I had the same concern about digestion/choking/blockages. Vet said it is a concern if the dog is a "gulper" but if they actually chew the rawhide they don't see those problems. So I guess it depends on the dog. Vet also said bully sticks were good.
  13. My Lila and I say hello to you and your Lila! My girl is a red fawn and will be 8 in September. Like your Lila she has won over non-dog people and has been an absolute joy. Congrats on adding a second.
  14. Glad to know there are other "hole pee-ers" out there.
  15. Lila digs for fun and every summer makes a nice hole for herself in the yard. Last night she did something weird. She dug in her hole a little bit then peed in it. Then she spent a good couple minutes carefully covering the wet spot with dirt using her nose. I’m sure this is normal dog behavior, but it is unusual for MY dog. Anybody else ever see this behavior with their greyhounds or other breeds?
  16. I found it helps to get them used to stairs on some really easy, non-threatening ones. Like big, wide, solid concrete ones on the exteriors of buildings. Public buildings (after hours if necessary) like schools, libraries, offices usually work. I took Lila to a local college with all kinds of buildings and steps. Once she got used to making her legs work on the easy steps we tried more and more increasingly difficult ones and by the end of our walk around campus she was a stair-master. Good luck!
  17. What a sweet guy! I bet he won't be a foster for long. I bet that's how my Lila will look when she gets older.
  18. I think it would depend on the dog. My Lila is perfectly behaved, loves people, and doesn’t like exuberant dogs. For those reasons I take her with me on vacation and she’s just fine. She’s happy to explore new places and meet new people and as long as there’s a bed or blanket for her she settles easily anywhere. The thought of boarding her makes me very uncomfortable. I know she would not like a doggy day care situation where she was expected to play with a bunch of boisterous dogs all day and she would be upset by dogs barking in their kennels. If I had to go somewhere without her I would find some greyhound savvy people who could take care of her either at my house or theirs.
  19. Lila is doing great on Fromm Gold Large Breed Adult. I also use sample packs of the 4 Star foods as treats. I really like that they are a family owned company here in Wisconsin.
  20. Lila’s winter coat started coming in in December/January. She got furrier than ever this year. Normally she’s got a patchwork rump but got full fur coverage this year. She has not started her spring shed at all yet.
  21. Jan, I’m so sorry. It is a testament of your love for Seamie that so many other people were able to know and love him.
  22. Are you familiar with Fromm? http://frommfamily.com/ High quality food made at their own family owned factory here in Wisconsin. I feed the Large Breed Adult Gold. They also have a “fancier” 4-star line with all kinds of fun flavors, including some grain free. Their kibbles are quite small, especially the 4-star ones. They do not sell at big box pet stores, so you would probably need to check feed stores or specialty stores to find it.
  23. I use pre-moistened pet wipes for quick touch ups.
