I am so very sorry for your loss.
  2. I'm so very sorry for your loss. Like my Sheba, he almost made it to 14, a good long life. My heart goes out to you.
  3. So glad you are able to get another hound! I, on the other hand, recently adopted two sister beagle mixes that both of their weights don't add up to one Sheba. Unfortunately, they are real scardy-cats of everything including me. They have bonded so tight with each other but not me. I've only had them since Jan 14, so I know I have to give it time. I've been advised to work with them separately to loosen their tight bond. A friend is bringing her greyhound and shepard mix today and we'll try socializing them and walking them separately. Maybe I should only have adopted one of them....
  4. I was supposed to get the two beagle mixes this Wednesday, but the volunteer driver was sick so it's been delayed. Not sure when yet. A delay is working out well, though, since my swimming pool resurfacing is just completed but the deck still needs a final coat. My front yard has a wooden picket fence, and I'm worried that the gaps might be so wide that the dogs could get through. I won't know until I see the size of the dogs. Another project might be required, sigh. The other wooden fences are board on board so no gaps.
  5. I just committed to adopting (on a trial basis before official adoption) two little female beagle mixes, age 5 years, each under 20 pounds, underwent heartworm treatment, in separate foster homes somewhere in Florida. According to their foster write-ups, they are quite shy and timid, although apparently one girl is starting to come out of her shell. I'm getting them from southeast beagle rescue, www.sebr.org. I decided on getting the two so they would be companions for each other. I truly hope it works out, both for them and me. Never had small dogs of any breed before so will be quite an adjustment for all of us. Wish me luck!
  6. I am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet girl.
  7. It was suggested by one of the rescue group’s reps that a basenji would not be a good fit for me and after reading up on them I agree. I’m working towards getting a beagle at the moment.
  8. Sure hope that doesn't happen to me! But congratulations!
  9. The lift-assist harness I got from Gods Greyts helped if Sheba slipped and did the spread eagle this last year. Didn't happen often but I wanted to be prepared when it did. She wore it constantly the past couple months. The vet strecher isn't something I would want to deal with. I live alone and can't always get help in a pinch. Anyway, my large dog days are over, Great dog-owning years but sadly it's time to downsize again.
  10. I looked around various websites for whippet rescues in my area, even all of Florida, but didn't find much.
  11. Since Sheba passed December 6, I have decided I no longer can have a large dog as a companion because of my age (77) and strength loss. Sheba weighed 60 pounds, and when she no longer could jump into the car because of her hip arthritis, I had to get assistance from friends and neighbors to get her into the car for a vet visit. I had a lift-assist harness on her that allowed me to get her back up if she slipped, but I still couldn't lift her off the ground by myself. Then she no longer could jump out of the car, so I had to get assistance with that, too. I considered assistance steps but decided not to since she was almost 14 and failing. So now I will be searching for a smaller dog. I'm not particularly fond of the tiny ones, so will be looking for dogs in the 30-35 pound range. A small-ish Beagle comes to mind. No puppies at this stage of my life, just an adult or senior rescue. It is a tough choice, because I have always had large dogs, first Great Danes, then Greyhounds, and love the large breeds.
  12. I am so very sorry for your loss. Having lost my Sheba on Monday, I really feel your pain and sadness. My sincere condolences.
  13. I am so very sorry for your loss. Having just gone through losing Sheba on Monday, I really feel your pain and sadness. My sincere condolences.
  14. I had to let go of my Sheba this afternoon, 1 month before her 14th birthday. I had her for 12 years and 1 month. She stopped eating Friday, and since she was a true chow hound who always let me know she wanted food, I knew she was telling me something. She also stopped barking at me, another sign. Her hips were going, and she totally collapsed at the vet's office. The vet and I agreed it was time to let her go. Undergoing tests would just have prolonged the inevitable. My heart is broken, but as we all know, better a day early than a day too late. The house is so empty without my snarky, boisterous, sometimes pain-in-the-ass hound. She loved all greyhounds and hated cats, small dogs, squirrels, and skateboards. Her greyhound friend Averitt passed away November 23, so they are both at the Rainbow Bridge. Run free, my sweet Sheba. I will never forget you.
  15. I'm beginning to see this happening to Sheba who will be 14 next month. As others say, better a day early than a day too late. My thoughts are with you at this painful time.
  16. Averitt, black female, almost 13 years old, passed away yesterday. Aggressive cancer throughout her body. Better a day early than a day late... Averitt was my dogsitter friend's heart hound. We exchange dogsitting services. She takes care of Sheba at my house when I travel, and I keep her two hounds at my house when she travels. She is down to one hound now, Voyage, almost 12. Averitt was such a sweet hound, and she slept with me every night whenever at my house, always crowding me but in a gentle way. We will miss her very much. She's at the Rainbow Bridge now.
  17. I know, and I remind him about it all the time. He's in the UK, I'm in Florida, but we meet in Torremolinos every year since 2010, except right now he won't travel because of Covid and all the hoops he has to go through to travel. I just came back from Torremolinos and wish he'd been there. Maybe next year...
  18. I noticed that, too. Have watched and/or streamed the show for several years now. I have a UK friend who resembles Paul Hollywood.
  19. No experience, but white coat syndrome raises it?
  20. I'm so glad to learn about these! Will definitely give them a try. Sheba is almost 14 (Jan 23), and I'm going to skip her dental next spring because her hips are failing and I don't want her anaesthetized anymore. I use dental rinse, chews, and spray but haven't cleaned her teeth myself. Better late than never with these I suppose.
  21. Wow, that one really brought tears to my eyes! Lovely tribute.
  22. I got one for Sheba, almost 14 now, whose hips are giving out slowly but surely. She's fine on level ground but now refuses to jump into my Nissan Cube trunk (guess it's too high now; she still jumps onto my bed though, but it's a low platform bed) for monthly trips to the vet. I'm not strong enough to fully lift her but somehow managed to lift her into the car last visit using the harness. The vet tech lifts her back into the car for me for return home.
  23. Is that one of the harnesses from God's Greyts? Sort of looks like it.
