  1. My Penny recently suffered a severe gastric upset. (The vet commented "That's one pissed off gut!"). After several days of rx food, she has been on Prilosec daily for not quite 8 weeks. The only side effect is she is eating enthusiastically once again. She will be on it for the rest of her life. Sadly, she has also recently been diagnosed with DCM, which is life-limiting. I realize 8 weeks isn't much of a long term, but, hopefully this will add to your toolbox of info.
  2. Welcome from Penny, Sasha, and Sirius, in Delaware! Sasha says the black girls are the prettiest!

  4. My vet says after dentals, whether teeth are lost or not, 1/2 portion soft food, offered at regular dinnertime. If that is eaten, wait a half hour and, if all is well, offer the other half in half an hour. If the initial portion is is refused, wait until the next morning to feed.
  5. One of my girls goes back to The Parrot Nosed Bitch! I laughed aloud! I wonder if she had a roman nose?
  6. Dr. Very Expensive prescribed generic Vetmedin for Penny. He sent me home with a 30 day supply for $130. The good news is, I just found Vetmedin on Chewy for $88 for 50! Yay!
  7. Penny, as well as my other two, eat TOTW pacific stream. Potato is the 4th ingredient, behind sweet potato, and a bit later there are lentils and potato starch, along with more fishy stuff. Among other things, Dr. Very Expensive, the cardiologist, suggests a senior food that is low sodium. The reason Penny initially went to our regular vet was a GI issue. During the exam, vet noticed an atypical sound in her chest, and off we went to the specialty vet. She just eased in to eating her regular food after chickie/rice for a week. I haven't researched low sodium senior food yet, but I will. I'm still processing this whole thing, and didn't want to change food on top of everything else, as in 3 new meds and not wanting to eat. sigh On another note, TOTW was the third food I tried, and the first one to not cause crystals. I'm not particularly bonded to it, but it doesn't cause crystals, everyone likes it, so I stuck with it.
  8. This is very interesting, since my Penny was just diagnosed last Friday with early DCM. She has been eating grain free for years. She is 9years, 7months old, and also has SLO. All three of mine eat this, since the previous foods I fed gave them chrystals in their urine. So now what do I feed?

  11. Hello and welcome from Sasha, Penny, and Sirius, from Delaware!
  12. Yup, my vets require it before senior dentals.
  13. Hello from Penny, Sasha, and Sirius in Delaware!
  14. Thank you. At this point, she can use ANY info to help her make a decision. She is now sending me medical studies to review!
  15. I'm asking for my daughter's dog, who tore her ACL in a tumble, a complete tear. She lives in Mexico. The TTA procedure is done more frequently in Europe and Mexico, and the TPLO almost always is done in the US. The TTA is less invasive, but both procedures carry risks of various types. Lua just turned 6, is active and fit, and weighs about 19 kilos (42 lbs). She is a mutt, but there must be some spitz in her background, because she looks like a heavyset fox. Does anyone have experience with either procedure? She has the option of having the TTA done in Mexico with the orthopedist in her regular vet's practice, who is experienced and confident, or going to her vet in LA for the TPLO and spending a minimum of 7 times as much, which she will do if that surgery really is better. Thank you in advance for any comments, yay or nay.
  16. Actually, Penny hasn't ever been reliably housebroken, unless in her crate. Her indoor pee spots are the dog beds. Originally her dose was 3 niacinamides/day. She was having accidents multiple times daily, then my boy dog would mark over her accidents, so I was washing multiple beds every day. I did try crating her, but she just peed in her crate. Three doses a day was too much for her, and for me, too, so I made an executive decision to drop her down to 2, informing the vet I was doing so. As I said, she is doing fine. One morning a week I have a class, so I get up extra early and feed everyone right away, so Penny has at least 2 hours in which to go out and pee several times before I leave.
  17. My 9yo Penny is an SLO girl. After the doxy, she was put on 2 caps of niacinamide and 2 Free Form fish oil caps per day. I get the niacinamide at the Vitamin Shoppe, and the fish oil from Chewy. According to the woman at the vitamin place, niacinamide is a kidney flush for humans. I don't know if it works the same in dogs, but within the hour of taking her capsule, she is drinking half the bowl, and half an hour later MUST go out, and about every 3 hours after that. I've lost count of how many nails she has lost, maybe 5, but none after about a month's worth of the supplements. One nail hasn't grown back, so she just has a nubbin of a dried up quick on that paw. The other nails are coming in a bit gnarly, but they're not splitting or cracking. She goes every 3 weeks to the vet for a nail trim. Altho the tech does the trim, my vet always checks the condition of the nails before Penny is brought back to me, and will give me a heads up if she thinks there will be an issue. I use marshmallows, velveeta cheese, and peanut butter as the basic pill camouflage, with leftovers from my meals as a change up. The PB I just scrape a wad onto the edge of her bowl, and stick the pills into it. Mooshies get torn in half and a pill stuck in each half. Velveeta cheese now comes in a box of 4 smaller blocks, so you don't have to open the big block all at once. This morning I poked a hole in a hunk of banana and stuck a pill in far enough to hold it, and they were both gobbled down. Lastly, my dogs have gotten Grizzly salmon oil for years. I gave them much less than the suggested dosage because it makes for loose poops. The Free Form hasn't changed Penny's poop at all, which tells me that it is being absorbed, and not just running through her body and coming out the other end. ETA: Since Lupus compromises the immune system, I am no longer giving Penny any vaccines, and she is now a homebody. I will get her the rabies shot, since Delaware won't accept titers for that.
  18. Dr. Brown and Dr. Coon are the best surgeons in the area, so if Dr. Coon referred you out, then it must've been a particularly nasty break. Poor girl! I can't remember the name of the place you were referred to, but I know they enjoy an excellent reputation. I wonder if she skidded and got her foot caught under/between the posts of your fence? Prayers and paws crossed from us, for a speedy and drama free recovery!
  19. Are you going to see Dr. Coon? He'll take good care of her. Feel better, girlie!
  20. Welcome from Penny, Sasha, and Sirius, from Milford!
