  1. I have a squawker by my front door, by my back door and in my car. All my dogs are squawker trained--the girls by their foster moms and my boy has been trained by me. Actually, the girls trained him. When they hear it they come arunnin', and he followed. I practice with it every couple of weeks. They get an extra special treat when they come to the squawker. I hope that no one ever gets loose, but if one does, I believe the squawker will help bring him/her to someone who is looking. And squawking.
  2. WOW! He is gorgeous! Welcome from slower lower Delaware!
  3. Many many moons ago, when I got my first grey, we did obedience for 2 years. By the time I stopped, Pharaoh was "ring ready". (Actually, he was ready before that, but we were having fun.) We didn't go any further because there were no obedience competitions within my reach that were held indoors, and I was afraid to take him to a show that wasn't enclosed. Anyway, my point is that there are greys out there who would work out for you and your daughter, maybe a small girl? The bigger question would be does she want to do this?
  4. My Beggar used to do that when he wanted out and I was on the phone and not getting off quickly enough. Of course, when he got out, first he'd sniff the air, count the clouds or birds, then wander around from bush to bush until he found just the right spot......
  5. Frontline, Furnace filter, First of the month; Heartguard Halfway through.
  6. I have this same problem with my new boy. He knows the command "Back up!" when I am in the house. That is, if I need to go out, I can say "back up" and he'll back away from the door, about 4 feet. However, when I need to come back in, that brindle nose is right there as the door opens. He has no idea what "back up" means if I'm on the other side of the door! I can see that for this lesson I will need to enlist a friend, for both inside and out.
  7. She IS gorgeous! What do you call her coloration? I think I would've taken her even if she had a UTI, SA, and needed prescription food and custom made beds!
  8. We eat Diamond here, too, and I'm worried also. Didn't they have a recall last year, too? I don't know whether to commend them for being so on top of things, or damn them for being so careless.
  9. My BJ's had the french fry size by another maker, which I grabbed. Upon further inspection, they were made in China, so I put them back. Are these US made? If so, I'll find a friend who has a Sam's membership and offer to take her on her next shopping trip!
  10. My girls are avid antler fans. They, too, prefer the sliced ones.
  11. I have always considered them seniors when they hit 7.
  12. I too can say that this is a valid concern, as I am an elderly woman living alone. I have always had big boys, and I really do love them. Last Fall, when it was time for my last big boy to go to the bridge, I had to make an appointment with my neighbor to put Beggar into the car before I made the appointment with the vet. Had he not been available, I would've had to call on a friend from another town. I could've dragged Beggar to the car on a bed, but never could I have gotten him into the car alone. I have two little girls now, who, if something unforseen happens, I can at least get into the car one half at a time. That is, give a bear hug from above and lift the front end in, then boost the back end in behind.
  13. All but one of mine learned to sit. Penny, well, she has other talents that I'm assuming will show up one day. However, there are many pet certifying agencies out there, and many don't require the sit. Therapy Dogs International, and Therapy Dogs Incorporated are two I can think of right now. For that matter, some facilities don't have a certification as a requirement. One of the places I visit just requires an interview with you and the dog, to determine that you are both appropriate candidates. One caution, tho--if certified, you carry your own insurance. If you are visiting as a pet therapy team without certification at a facility that doesn't require certification, make sure they have the appropriate insurance coverage.
  14. Many moons ago, I accompanied a friend of mine on a home visit for a collie rescue. She was skilled in doing g'hound visits, and the collie group had no one in the area, so they asked her to do the home visit. They sent along a list of specific questions they wanted answered in the interview, and what requirements they had for the house/yard/etc. Perhaps the greyhound group here could do something of the same? BTW, the interviewees were collie-savvy folks, and passed with flying colors, and were eager to drive several states away to pick up their new dog...
  15. The amusing part of this tale is that my DD and SIL are ovo-lacto-vegetarians!
  16. My daughter and her husband will be adopting a pound puppy next weekend. The pup will be at least 8 weeks old by then. They are strongly considering feeding raw, and have done their research, but can't seem to find any concrete data as to when to start. Some say feeding to puppy is fine, others say to wait. Does anyone have any advice I can pass along? I've sent them all the dog food and raw feeding info/plans I could find from here... They live in Europe, if that makes a difference. OOPS! It isn't a greyhound pup, so if this should be somewhere else, Mods, please move it.
  17. I'm sorry for your girl. I'm sure it is very difficult for both of you. But, as an aside, I have the Orvis waterproof/scratchproof bed cover on my couch. I got it at the outlet store, and it really works. I spilled a whole glass of soda on myself and it, and the soda just puddled up. The cover is 2 layers: The top layer feels and looks like fine-wale cord, and it is backed with a sheeting-type fabric. I'm sure the top is somehow made of plastic, but it truly feels like fabric. The only drawback is it is very heavy--not in thickness, but in weight. I have a queen, and it covers my couch, but not quite long enough to cover the arms. If I had a choice, I would have gotten a king... Anyway, just a suggestion...
  18. Not to hijack or anything, but I just lost a son of Greys Statesman, who didn't have any eye issues. Does PRA occur all the time, or is it just a genetic percentage of the offspring? This is very interesting! Anyway, I think Summit will look classy in Doggles. Cool as a moose, even!
  19. Ticks can often lurk in trees. I have been told that they sense the carbon dioxide that mammals exhale, and let go, hoping they will land on a nice juicy host, whether it be man or beast.
