  1. I gasped at that dollar amount....and teared up at, "teetering on the edge." My prayers for your hound...and your sanity. What a mess all around Sorry I can't be of help...
  2. thx! Me too! Chance is making me OCD with him...being he's my first grey (def not the last!!!!) I examine him every single day....any abnormality I figure out what it could be. Thx to GT, I don't "totally" freak out over EVERYTHING....
  3. After spending 10 bucks at Petsmart to get Chance's toe nails cut (btw....she barely cut them ) I have decided to do it myself. He's VERY comfortable with me poking, proding, petting excessively , and I really think he'd be fine with me doing it myself. I'm wondering what every one uses and moreover, prefers! I've read some threads on dremel bit types...ways to make your hound "allow" you to even cut them. I'm not looking for advice on that....I'm asking those of you who do it at home to help me decide which type of tool to go with. I DO NOT want to cut the quick!!! (I just bought the guillotine style for $15 and I'm thinking maybe an investment in a dremel may be worth it....still debating...so you will decide FOR ME )
  4. Well...this is why I was so concerned. We got nothing but light, fluffy snow. It was DEEEEP....but not crusty and hard on top nor on the bottom. The other poster was right tho..it went away A LOT within a day...and it's gone now. I never thought that being he is white with ticking...that you'd see it more than on a darker skinned/coated hound. I"m tring to rationalize it here lol.... Thx guys!
  5. I think his legs look worse in person....BUT phewww i feel better that he's gonna be ok. I will certainly stay away from the snow for now .... and get that stuff the first poster mentioned to ease any discomfort he may have...although...he's fast asleep on the couch THANK YOU for easing my mind... Merry Christmas to you all....thx for the help! Brianne
  6. This is my first winter...and first snow fall with my boy. We've been stuck inside with the 2ft of snow we got here in NJ....today the dog park was finally open and I (we) couldn't wait to get there... Of course the field wasn't plowed...but it'd been trampled on some by other dogs. Nonetheless...Chance was running around like a lure was ahead of him....soooo cute to see. However, after 10 min of absolute bliss, Chance was by the gate ready to go. On our way out (and everyone saying..."You leaving already?!") I noticed Chances legs all "bloody" looking..but not bleeding at all. Here are some pics... Is snow too cold for their bare legs? I feel like an awful mom for letting this happen... but it just came out of the blue! I"ve seen so many greys on here play in the snow...is Chance just sensitive? *** To offset some questions: no he didn't scuffle with any dogs, nor get scratched in the woods; he wasn't there long enough. Plus, this wasn't there before we went...however I've noticed these "unbleeding-bloody" areas before on his belly and legs...BUT not to this severity. I DO KNOW that their skin is fragile...just hoping it's nothing more. (side note...I'm buying those booties....TALL booties for him!) THX!!!
  7. HI....just my 2 cents: Was researching glucosamine/chondroiten/MSM/HCL on here and came across this post by Greyhoundgang....Chance has a random limp after a lot of exercising, and although he's only 3 1/2, I guess it's never too early. Check out this product...may help, who knows. (Check out the testimonials...) Good luck! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ There are good joint supplements out there. There are also some not so good. 1. Read the labels. Know what is in the product. Know the company. 2. Know the dose. Greyhounds need 1500 mg a day of each product - Glucosamine HCL, MSM, Chondroitin. Vitamin C to bowel tolerance. 3. Read Testimonials - Why Get Up & Go? 1. It works. 2. It's all natural, no fillers and powder. Just put in some wet food (cottage cheese, yogurt, canned, deli meat) 3. It's inexpensive. A 60-day supply of Glucosamine HCL is only $14.95. 4. Proceeds Help Hounds, not pharmaceutical companies. Almost Home for Hounds happened with proceeds from Get Up & Go. Happy to answer any questions.
  8. THIS IS WHAT I WAS HOPING TO HEAR!!! I will certainly keep an eye on it!! I've had Chance for 3 mos now...sounds short, but I feel like it's been years Never an issue with all our walks/dogpark over the weeks....just trying to be a good mommy Thx jgeiger!
  9. Hello GT... I'll be a newbie for years, and being a fur-parent for the 1st time ever, I find myself being OCD Here's the deal...about a week ago, after an hour walk at a reserviour, I noticed him gingerly walking on his left leg. He still had NO PROBLEM flying up the stairs, nor jumping up on my bed for nighty-night. Next day at dogpark, someone else noticed it too...HOWEVER...Chance had no problem running like crazy. He didn't show signs of pain..happy as can be as always . About two days of no walks/dogpark due to weather and he is fine again. Here we are today...went to dogpark...run like nuts, and no signs of limping....until we got home...more ginger walking...same leg Here's the question...when do I say enough is enough and take him to the vet ($$$) for an X-ray and god knows what else? I haven't gotten doggy insurance yet, which I DO plan on getting. Can it heal on its own? Am I being paranoid? To note: at reserviour there are many pointy, bluish chuncks of rocks amongst the dirt. We usually divert our walk from those areas, but some are inevitable. <---Am I just being hopeful it's only a stone issue (no signs of problems on the paw).... Thank you for your time for just reading this...and any advice is grateful!!
  10. I still consider myself a newbie too, so just take my advice with a grain of salt. I have a bed-hog too...and like you, I can't do w/out him sleeping with me (I have thought about banning him as well so i could get some sleep lol). With me gone most the day, I feel like it is our only bonding time. Simile had a great suggestion...I'd try that. Another way to not "solve" it b/c I dont think that can be done...is to train him to "stay" till you are in bed and in YOUR comfortable position and then allow him to come into YOUR bed. I am able to move Chance when I get up to pee and find him in MY warm spot...luckily he has allowed me to do this. He does then proceed to snuggle up against me...push me (he's stretching...I think ) and sometimes plant his paws on my face or his face in my armpit. I love every moment, but that is just me. Put your bed up against the wall maybe and put some blankets like Simile suggested by "his" area. This way he can lean against the wall instead of you sometimes. All and all, I wish you the best....it could be worse
  11. LOOK AT ALL THOSE SPOTS!! Chance is ticked too and now I'm obsessed with EVERY spot on him...Greys are such beautiful creatures!
  12. That is hilarious! And Chance says, "Thank you!!"
  13. Mannnn...you have a beautiful Grey there!!! That 2nd to the last pic....just ate me up! THAT LOOK is what does it for me EVERYTIME! She is gorgeous!!!
  14. I'm still laughing at my question....THX GT'ERS!!! I still feel better asking tho
  15. I laugh at even me asking still...thank you! He stays fairly long, but usually due to me moving around and making "some" sort of airway path....again...just curious and neurotic!
  16. I'm still new to having my Grey....it's been a little over 2 mos. This will probably go down at the dumbest question ever, but I will feel better if I knew. Chance, just like EVERY OTHER GREY, loves to smother his head into any crevice. This morning, he jammed his head so far into my armpit and pillow, etc. that I swore there was no way he could breathe. Now, the obvious answer is that, of course he can breathe...however, it spooked me a bit...and yes, i'm being over-protective. However, i can't help myself asking and getting made fun of , and so is better than something happening to my precious boy. The ONLY reason I ask, if it is AT ALL possible for them to suffocate themselves is b/c of their actions on the race track. They will injure themselves and still run to the finish, correct?! Well, .....do they have this mentality with "other" things?! Again...silly, but I don't care Thx GT as usual :)
  17. I AGREE! I was wondering the same thing about when to throw the coat on. THX!
  18. BRILLIANT!!! I'll check it out! THANK YOU!!! <==== Chance says, "Me toooo!" This sounds good too! Like I said, I got that liquid stuff...probably similar to your EMT gel. I used it on the little nicks he seems to get on his legs. The dog park has a lot of woodsy area too that he LOVES to explore. Just to note...I am figuring out from word of mouth that it is a bit unusual for Greys to be social with other breeds. I knew he may be unsure at first (well he wasnt really lol), but some Greys never adapt to other doggies. I'm very thankful b/c I may just be a tad more elated by him in the park than he is. I'm one proud and lucky mama! (sorry to get all mushy...I just had the best morning with him) xoxo THANKS again for you help as always GT! I couldn't get through this w/out you all!!! Truly!
  19. ahhhh....did not realize this. I felt "unsure" putting it on b/c it's an open wound. Oddly, I tried a good ol bandaid (the material kind) and it stuck AND he isn't ripping it off!! Yay!! I'd rather have it covered!! SEEEE....I THOUGHT OF THAT....but as usual, I'm listening to what I was told by Greyhound shelter....obviously some things get looked over and I need to trust my instincts too! EDIT....haven't figured out how to reply to mulitple people in one shot yet...sorry hehe....
  20. You are all too sweet!!! I think he'll be ok too....just gotta keep it clean and keep an eye on it!
  21. Greyt advice...thank you! He has no pain..barely knows it's there, so i don't think any meds is necessary. Like I said, i'll keep an eye on for an infection and then off to the vet asap. The bandage around the body was a big no-no, so i really hope just applying triple antibiotic when he's super sleepy is enough! I am truly pleased and thankful Chance loves other dogs. The way he acted and his face gave me just pure joy! I swear i think i was happier than he was! Oddly they wouldn't allow him to wear a muzzle in the park (good thing i already had him meet a few diff types of dogs before hand....who knows what could have happened). Luckily it was an awesome night...just the boo boo....he's a tough boy... he'll be ok. I'm just afraid that this may not be the last one, nor the worst of them. I guess if it doesn't stop bleeding or if it's to the bone ....OUCH....that is when I hit up the vet. THX!!!
  22. We had a GREEYYYT time at the dog park for the first time, but my baby got a booboo.... It's not bleeding excessively so I know he doesn't need stitches. However, it's about a centimeter tall and wide and I just want to make sure I do the right thing to make sure it doesnt get infected. I wiped it asap with an antiseptic wipe twice. Went to Petsmart and she said hydrogen peroxide and bandage it up....add triple-antibiotic if I wanted. Of course the guaze with the bandage lasted all of 5 seconds. So i put a liquid bandage adhesive on it. I'll see how it looks tomorrow, but I wanted to know your advice on the "minor" scrapes Greys are prone to get b/c of their fragile skin. I live in a condo and the dogpark is my dog's saving grace for true fun time with dogs and running...I'd HATE to take that away from him....I know dog parks are not the best place for them. Advice GT THXXX!!!
  23. I'm still new...what the heck are "zoomies" ????
  24. THANK YOU EALGFLYT AND FASAVE!!! Some people think i'm silly to get insurance...but sometimes you get that dog that lives to 16 and never has ONE ailment (like an old dog of mine) and other times you can have life-threatening things that cost thousands. I'd rather be ready for the latter and hope for the former! I will be getting insurance and will def do my homework (like a good teacher should lol) and find what's good for Chance and me! you are all greyt..thank you
