  1. It looks like an infection to me. Good luck Emma. Karen
  2. I'm a pet sitter, so I love the boys and girls. I have always been a bit partial to boys though. I seem to bond quicker with the males and usually (not always) better with the boys. I have a big sweet lazy boy and I wouldn't hesitate to get another boy if I could find the money. But if I found the right female, I wouldn't mind having her as well.
  3. It sounds like some skin or her ear got pinched while putting on the martingale. Sometimes greyhounds scream for minor things. It gives us heart attacks when they do it, but it really may mean nothing. I hope she's OK. Keep an eye out for any issues and keep checking her ears, and maybe her back teeth. It could be the very start to an ear problem, or it tightened over back teeth just right and there's something going on back there.
  4. They used the spray on Bu when I first got him because they thought he was allergic to the topical treatment. I use Revolution on my 4 cats and on Bu. I had 2 of the cats, then found the other 2 on the side of road, who of coarse came with fleas. My vet said, as long as I used the Revolution on all the cats, it would kill all the fleas in my whole house. I have yet to see another flea. And Bu does great on it. I just wanted to give you another option. Good luck.
  5. I'm also on Neurontin. I was put on it originally for fibromyalgia pain, but it wasnt helping so i went to get off it and wasnt sleeping as well so i added it to my chronic fatigue syndrome cocktail and every time I've tried to get off of it my sleep has gotten worse. So hopefully it will help Outlaw sleep well too.
  6. It also looks like bruising to me. Could he have gotten a bit tangled in his leash and pulled? Bu sometimes freaks out if the leash even touches his armpit, then he bucks and makes it tight and bruises himself. Where do you get traumeel gel? How do you use it? Poor guy. I hope it gets better soon.
  7. Bu gets to the dog park and sniffs around, pees and poops around, then sluts around (goes from person to person expecting love). I said he sniffs and doesn't run. Although he usually doesn't run, he will run occasionally. Honestly though, Bu takes a nap almost every time we go to the dog park. It's gotten to the point that people are surprised when they see him moving.
  8. I have heard of people putting pills in a small glob of butter, putting it into the mouth and just holding the mouth closed. Once the butter starts melting, he will automatically start swallowing. Good luck and I hope he feels better soon.
  9. My Dad claims he's bald from too many U-turns under the sheets. I kind of like the bald butts. I can always tell my guy apart from the other dogs at the park when they're running. I just look for the reflected light.
  10. My standard poodle had LP. It was pretty gradual if I remember correctly, but once it got bad, he sounded like Darth Vadar all the time. We did get him to the e-vet once or twice when it got really bad. He had the surgery and was doing better, but the scar tissue caused the same issue and he had to go back to have another 1 or 2 surgeries. All this happened between 10 and 12 y.o. and he lived to 15.
  11. When I've done peroxide I just hold the mouth open wide, tilt the head up. and pour. Chad, don't bear yourself up over this. We've all done stupid things. One day I left Bu in the car for a bit and he ate my seatbelt. 2 weeks later, I left Bu in the car and he ate the new seatbelt. I can't tell you how many times I've smacked myself in the head for that. Point is, we all make mistakes and it tends to take humans longer than the dogs to learn better. Just do what you can to make it right. That's what makes a good parent.
  12. Wow, thanks for the replies. Bu is actually up to 80 pounds now. He could afford to gain about another 5, but if he stays where he is, then I won't be upset. He is on kirkland lamb and rice now and just eats when he's hungry (grazes). Both vets I went to says he just needs to find the right food. His poop still is pretty bad, but I compromised. I'm OK with bad poop because when we switched to kirkland, his entire personality changed for the better. He is happier and healthier now. He does not eat as much as he did before and I think he just doesn't do well with chicken, so I avoid anything with it. He's doing so much better that it's unbelievable. Thanks for all the advice.
  13. I am on Amitriptyline. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. It is to help me sleep and I wouldn't use it for my dog unless absolutely necessary. I know how I feel if I stay up too long on it. The world spins, I can't see straight, I can't walk straight and my motor skills and brain function are limited.
  14. Bu had pudding poo no matter what we fed him. Pumpkin made him worse. He is now on metamucil. He just needed a high fiber diet. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.
  15. By feel, but also pet in the wrong direction and watch the part in the hair, you'll see the skin and you can look and feel at the same time. And if he has any hair starting to stick in weird directions it could be a tick.
  16. If he's having trouble pooping there could be a couple other reasons as well. 1. He could need his anal glands expressed. Either your vet or your groomer can check that. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF. If you don't know what you're doing (which I don't know either) you can pop the glands in the wrong direction with horrible results. 2. He could have either impacted or compacted (I can't remember which it's called) feces. Again, that's something your vet would have to check out. I'm a pet sitter and I was walking a dog 1 day and she had trouble pooping and was screaming in pain. This is the problem that she had. I would also recommend adding water to his food. Good luck and I hope he does better soon.
  17. When I got him (right off the track) we thought he looked a bit brown and that after a bath he would go back to black. But after the bath he still looks like a really really dark brown. He even has some reddish undertones. If you glance quickly he definitely looks black, but in the light he's brown. It's very odd. I love him either way, so it doesn't really matter, I would just like to be able to describe it accurately.
  18. Bu was tested for hook worms and came back negative. He was treated with panacur twice I think and that didn't make a difference. As long as he has his metamucil his poop is decent. He was also tested for bacterial issues in the intestines and everything came back normal. He was tested for pancreas issues and everything came back normal, but next vet visit I will ask about EPI in particular. I also talked to my sister about Bu's symptoms and she thought it was more of an intestinal thing. She is a pediatric endocronologist(sp?). It was hoping she'd have some insight, but she didn't think it was an endocrine thing.
  19. He is wonderful. I think I'm the lucky one that I get to bring my pup to work with me.
  20. I'm 26 and single. I adopted my boy in october.
  21. That's what it took to finally gain some weight. He still has another 5-10 pounds to go. As I said, he eats a ton. They tested for worms multiple times. I am slowly switching him to kirkland lamb, rice and vegetables right now.
  22. Hi, I'm Karen and I adopted Sambuca "Bu" in October. He's a wonderful big black/brown boy. We can't really figure his color out. He is already my best buddy. His racing name was "Mike needs gas". It's true. He is the LAZIEST dog I have ever met, including other greys. I'm ok with that. I got a grey because I wanted a lazy dog. Bu goes almost everywhere with me. I'm a dog walker and pet sitter so he even goes to work with me. He is a sweet boy who is totally cat safe, small dog safe (in fact he prefers playing with small dogs than big dogs), other breed safe and he's great with kids. He has already convinced at least 1 family that their next dog is going to be a greyhound. I really couldn't be happier with him. Thanks for reading, Karen and Bu (I can't post pictures from this computer, so I'll have to try going over to my parents.)
  23. Thanks for the replies. I tried pumpkin and that made Bu's poop looser. He has had the Panacur treatment twice I think. It's 8-9 cups of food a day now, and yes he gets it split between 3 meals. I'm a pet sitter so I have a pretty flexible schedule, thankfully. He now eats most of his meal then comes back and finishes the rest when he's hungry.
  24. Hi, I've been lurking for awhile and decided to ask for opinions. I adopted Sambuca "Bu" in early October of 2008. He was about 70 pounds. I started him out on purina pro plan but his poop was always like pudding, so I switched him to evo. That didn't help at all and he was still underweight and not really gaining. My vet decided to try him out on Hills I/D, 6 cups a day. His poop was still like pudding and he didn't really gain any weight. We decided to bring him down to 4 cups a day to see if it was just too much to digest. Bu lost 5 pounds in 2 weeks so we went right back up to 6 cups a day, but switched to Iams low residue. That didn't help his poop either so my vet decided to try Hills W/D, which is high fiber. The first time he pooped after he started on W/D he had totally solid poop. The w/d worked too well though and made him uncomfortable and he was pooping NON STOP. So we went back to Iams low residue and added in metamucil. His poop became soft but totally formed, so we are now happy with that. We then decided to up his food because in 1 month he only gained .4 pounds on 6 cups of food a day. He is now on between 8 and 9 cups of food a day, has finally gained about 10 pounds and has another 5-10 more to go. I am slowly switching him over to kirkland because I cannot really afford to pay $25 a week for food for him and I really don't think the food matters too much as long as he gets his metamucil. He has had his thyroid, pancreas, and bacteria levels tested. All the tests came back normal or negative. He has been tested many times for parasites and treated for giardia. We have had a second opinion who my rescue group sent us too because he has tons of greyhound experience and he said we just need to find the right food. Any advice you have would be great. Thanks in advance. Karen and Bu
