Oh, Sandy, I am so sorry!!! I know what a fabulous, caring, concerned and loving Mom you were to Dylan and there is no one on this planet who is going to convince me that you made the wrong decision. All the signs were there and you recognized what Dylan was trying to tell you. That's what greyt Moms do even when it feels like your heart is being ripped out of your chest. Godspeed, Dylan. Send your Mom a sign...............she needs to know that you're happy, healthy and running like the wind.

Dogs and cats are obligate carnivores; cats should eat 100% protein and dogs should eat somewhere between 75% and 100% protein depending on the feeding model with which you feel most comfortable. It's a very difficult pill to swallow - horrifying as a matter of fact. Took me 9 years to get comfortable with it but after doing the research - I became a believer that science backs this up. Google Dr. Doug Knueven and read his research - he also has a website and a blog. He is one of many (Dr. Karen Becker, Dr. Jodie Gruenstern, Dr. Pitcairn, to name a few) Veterinarians who have gone to "the dark side" and recommend that their clients feed a "species appropriate diet". If you are familiar with facebook at all, search "raw feeding", Raw Roundup with Dogs Naturally Magazine, Raw Food Diet For Dogs and Cats................there are a plethora of sites/groups from which to learn.

It's all related. His kidney disease most likely caused the cascade to heart related issues. Lorinda (3DogNite) can speak more to that. The "anorexia" was due to his lack of appetite. There was nothing you could have done differently..............not one thing.............that would have changed the outcome. I hope you can bring yourself to a place of acceptance. I hope you can accept this for what it is and go to a place where you can think of Nadir and smile.

Welcome to GreyTalk! Yes, I have seen this behavior when litter sisters adopted us - straight off the track. In our case, I think it was a combination of walking on cement and asphalt and the May heat here in FL that was hard on their pads. Dogs straight from the track have walked on sand for the most part. I "conditioned" their pads by starting with short walks; literally one house at a time. Day 1 was one house and back (houses here are on 60 foot lots.). Day 2, two houses. Day 3, three and so on and so on. If there was any reluctance as the number increased, I backed off one or two and then increased again. It was tedious, but by the time the cool weather arrived (those two days in January when it's actually COLD - ), we were walking about a mile and a half. If Rosie is "statueing", you may have to figure out what works best for her to get her attention and release her trance.

The former track Vet here has dogs come in at 7:30 am for dentals and they can usually go home at noon. Had him do my dogs a few years ago (before raw food and turkey necks) and I had to check their mouths before we left the office because they were acting as if they had never been anesthetized! Everyone I know who have taken their dogs to him for a dental has reported the same thing. The dogs are awake, happy and have beautifully clean teeth. One of my older girls had a couple of extractions but you would never have known it.
