" I can't handle getting up every 4 hours again tonight. It's like having a newborn in the house." Sounds like my 10.5 year old, but his UA came back perfect. Just adopted him in October and neither his former owners nor his 3 foster moms mentioned anything about his need to pee every 4 hours. 75% of the time his need to pee is almost like a startle response; "Oh, gotta get up and pee!". It's not like he pees a gallon and a half...............it's pretty "normal" considering his diet and water intake. I know very little about this boy's history, but from what I have been able to piece together and then add my own guesses, his original owners lived in a planned community that did not allow fences. He was most likely only allowed to pee on his property and was walked the around perimeter of the lot on a 3 foot leash. He does not lift his leg to pee and only pees one time regardless of whether he is let out in the backyard or walked on a leash. He is not incontinent - no spots on his bed or dribbling while walking - just this need to pee at least every 4 hours prompted by exaggerated urgency. Like Nikki, I am very tired. Have not had a full night's sleep since October. Any advice, experience, suggestions?

Have your Vet send a stool sample out to be checked for parasites including an ELISA for giardia. Some Vets are experiencing more positives for parasites from samples sent to outside labs. Just adopted a senior with an 8 year history of "colitis", regular stool samples, sulfasalazine, and metronidazole with prednisone for bloody diarrhea episodes. His former owners refused any and all additional testing. First stool sample that my Vet sent out came back positive for hook. After two doses of worming meds, the second sample came back positive for giardia. Since hookworm can hide or go dormant, it wouldn't surprise me if there is another positive result for hook from future tests.

We adopted a bonded pair of litter sisters. Our concerns were the same as yours because one was the benevolent alpha and the other her faithful follower. We ended up taking them to obedience together and when the follower showed some confidence, they were separated into different classes. I believe the class atmosphere provided enough distraction so that "alone" wasn't really alone.

There is so much more to VW but I don't see where the concern originates. Amicar makes much more sense. For a dog that gets stressed to the point of being a detriment, I would be more concerned about getting her in and out in the shortest time possible. Wish I knew more about the protocol of one of the track Vets because all his dentals are in and out in less than 4 hours with absolutely no sign of drowsiness, even with multiple extractions!

Nick, don't know where you live, but it might be worth it to look at I-Therm. I have used it regularly on several dogs fora number of different conditions and find it beneficial. Acupuncture can be a greyt help, too. Should you decide that it's time for one of the Nsaids, please, please, please ask about meds to protect his stomach. Nsaids can be very hard on the stomach and the last thing you want is a dog who can't/won't eat. Print the article about LS on greythealth.com and take it with you to Lincoln's next appt.
