  1. Bah, I saw the referral thing once I had Clarice all signed up!
  2. Well, I got Clarice signed up. Ozzie has to have had a vet visit within the past 30 days since he is 7 years old. I know I could've gone ahead and got him started (just have to take him to the vet within 15 days), but, we have annual exams next month anyway so I'll just get him started after we do that.
  3. I'm totally getting Clarice and Ozzie insured this weekend with them.
  4. I have a potty pad I'll put out on my screen porch (which has plastic on the windows this time of year). Last night in the time it took them to pee, all of my dogs were limping and crying, and it was only 6*F. Tomorrow it'll be a high of -4 with a wind chill much colder than that. I don't think anyone is concerned about their own comfort, but about the comfort and safety of their dog.
  5. My dogs were eating a buffalo based food and Clarice pooped CONSTANTLY. It was mainly a good consistency, but, it was a TON. Switched to Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural and they now poop twice a day and it's very good consistency. If your dog poops a lot, try a different food.
  6. Came over to look for updates...sorry to find she's got to stay overnight, but, I suppose it's for the best. Hopefully she has a restful night and everything looks good in the morning
  7. I posted here some time ago about TOTW Pacific Stream and my pups having issues. Turns out that they changed the source of the probiotics they were adding to the food...and the new one obviously didn't agree with my pups' tummies. We went to American Natural Premium's Buffalo formula after trying their Ocean Whitefish formula with no improvement in upset tummies or poops. They seemed to do okay for a while on the Buffalo, but, Clarice's volume of output was pretty high. I decided to try Earthborn Holistic's Primitive Natural formula and EUREKA!! We have good poop, ZERO gas, no tummy troubles, and a normal (actually very small) amount of poop. Just wanted to share that we're having a great experience with this food, since so many posts here understandably have to do with issues
  8. We'll take intermediate this winter - gives us a good activity to do when it's cold outside and we can't do much else. Probably after the first of the year, or whenever it gets really cold (still mild enough here that we can get out and do things without misery).
  9. Is the "some other pill" prednisone? While rare, pred can cause aggressive behavior in some dogs. If dog not on pred, I'd look for pain elsewhere, and do a full thyroid panel. Also to help the peeling nose, I'd do a burst and taper course of prednisone (peeling nose is OWIE!). Angel Pinky's regimen once she was off her burst and taper course of pred was: - Tetracycline am & pm - Niacinamide am & pm - Vitamin E am & pm - Omega 3 caplet pm Also ate grain free food and gave coconut oil with dinner in the evening - made a huge difference for her skin. If his lupus is not under control, could be his skin feels crawly too. Getting the lupus under control might be all that is necessary.
  10. Everyone here gets water on their kibble. They eat too fast and choke otherwise.
  11. I've had dogs respond well to supplementation as a resolution for aggressive behaviors too. Jen, I think if I were in the same boat (and the aggression he is displaying is not putting your girls or Cisco in a dangerous position...sounds to me like he is just crabbier than usual?), I'd start with the shampoo and get the ball rolling with the dermatologist and get him in to have the skin stuff looked at. Since Zuri can be a grumpy gus anyway (and granted I do not KNOW him, but just from what you've told us over the years about him...), if he were mine I'd be inclined to believe increased grumpiness is a result of him not feeling well (and maybe his skin is just itchy and pulling a little bit and he's just crabby?). Maybe right now just to begin with, get a few treatments in with the shampoo and see if the skin improves, and if, as it starts to improve, he is less crabby. That might help you better gauge where to go from there. And as you said, your schedule is flexible so there's also the hope that the dermatologist can see you soon. You know him best, though. Go with your gut.
  12. Wow, so many great suggestions! I'll compile a list to give to her so she can check them all out and see what would work best for her
  13. Okay...this is sort of an obnoxious song if you're not into heavy music, but...someone showed me this video not too long ago. This guy was an undergrad student and did this as a project for one of his classes. The song explains how parathyroid hormones raise your blood calcium, and the parathyroid gland detects falling calcium levels. Being a medical nerd of sorts, I'm always interested in knowing how things work. And I've found this video particularly interesting, given Huston's recent surgeries. Anyway, I just wanted to share, because if nothing else, the video is educational but also good for a giggle. Hoping Huston gets a good adjustment and acupuncture treatment and is feeling less wonky soon Death Medical - Altars of Calcium:
  14. She will be working in West Alles...not sure where she will be living though.
  15. A work friend is moving to the Milwaukee, WI area. She has a wonderful husky named Spirit who has seizures. He's been on zonisamide and is doing pretty well, but, as those of you with seizure pups know, it's an ongoing struggle sometimes. Can anyone recommend a good vet who is particularly great with seizure dogs? I was pleased that their current vet put him on zonisamide to start off with (I know pheno works for some but it seems there are better options out there now). Thanks
  16. So sorry to read that Jackie had to leave It sucks.
  17. I guess my kids are more sensitive to the change Even my iggies, who generally will eat ANYTHING, would not eat the TOTW anymore. Everyone is happily eating the American Natural Premium Buffalo formula with good output!
  18. Generally I believe the ones that show up in the skin are less nasty. Generally I think clean margins upon removal do the trick. Ace had something in her thigh that they aggressively removed in order to get nice clean margins. It was a sarcoma of some type. It never returned though.
  19. A little of both, but, we don't go overboard on freebies. They get more freebies when we're visiting my folks, but, each of them technically will do *something* to "earn" their treat. Mom's boy Sunny knows "take a bow" and "speak" so she will ask for one of those in exchange for his cookie. Ronny is new, but does "speak" so that's what she asks for from him. Clarice does lots of things - sit, down, shake, come, here...so I've asked Mom to pick one of those to ask of her for a cookie. Ozzie doesn't know much, but he does know "here"...and will touch his nose to an outstretched hand even if the cookie is in the opposite hand. Here at home, I'll ask the same of Ozzie and Clarice (I give cookies when I'm leaving for the day), and my little guys get cookies for going to their crates. I guess I don't often spontaneously dole out cookies...I'm certainly not against it, it's just something that hasn't ever occurred to me
  20. Hoping for lots of good time left for Diamond I lost three to osteo in a 12 month period. It's awful.
  21. A life well-lived, for sure. Wishing you peace
  22. Honestly, I'd look for something with a private business that specializes in training. Visit a class by yourself first (any reputable trainer welcomes observers) and make sure they are using positive methods (no collar popping!). I just did basic obedience with Clarice...doing it at Petsmart would have been so distracting for her that it would have been a giant waste of money.
  23. My kids are back to good poops on the American Natural Premium Whatever this new probiotic is, it didn't agree with my kiddos
  24. Pinky did Cytoxan, Piroxicam, and Artemisinin as well. No side effects.
