  1. Toley has a piece every day. Our grocery store sells them cut up, so he gets a piece. LOVES them. Our last boy, Opie, also loved them.
  2. Our Opie about 4 years ago, ate a turkey carcass on Thanksgiving. He had never been a garbage hound at all, so we didn't even think about it. We gave him lots of bread. He had diarrhea for about 3 days, but otherwise was fine.
  3. Most greyhounds will prefer to sleep where you sleep. If you are not ready to leave the dog out because of the cats, then keep the crate in your room until you can transition it to a dog bed. I would not crate it at night in another room.
  4. I am so very sorry. He was very special, and will be missed. Words are inadequate, I know.
  5. I too know your pain. Our Opie went to the Bridge in December, and I still cry. Something will happen, I will look at a picture, have a memory - and there come the tears. I was told by many to get another right away, someone to love who needed a home, DH was lost, didn't know what to do with himself. I told myself maybe in 4-5 months, after I had time to grieve, to adjust. That Opie would send someone our way. And 2 weeks later we got a phone call from the adoption coordinator, that a hound was available, was actually dog of the month, and she felt so strongly that he was meant to be ours, I was against it, it was too soon, but DH so wanted to go see him. Well I think you know the ending, we went to see him, "just to look", and our Toley came home with us the next week. I just knew he was sent by our Opie, why else would he have appeared so soon in our lives, and the adoption person so certain this was the one. I still talk to Opie, just like he is here. His picture, ashes and muzzle are in the living room, and I talk to him. Nobody but you can know when and if you are ready to have another hound, but I can tell you I said no, but getting Toley was the best. He helped us heal, and we gave him a needed home, for his 4th birthday. I hope you start having more "up" days than "down". Zero will forever be in your heart, that you will never lose.
  6. Our Opie really seemed to prefer men over women. He never met a man he didn't like, but sometimes would growl at women, even just seeing them walking across the street. Toley, on the other hand, seems to love everyone equally, and loves to meet everyone, even children.
  7. First let me say how sorry I am, I know the pain you are experiencing too well. Our Opie was diagnosed with rib cancer, and we had 4 weeks. We went to an oncologist, consult with OSU, visited our vet at least weekly, read everything, added more pain meds, but within 2 weeks he stopped eating. We still felt we could "maybe" do something, to get him to eat, to control the pain. In hindsight, we should have let him go right then. It was so obvious, but we just weren't willing to give up on him, for both of us. The night we "knew", he was just moaning in pain, no matter how much meds we gave him. In the am he was a bit better, but we just knew we could not let him suffer another night like that. Whoever said rather a day to soon than a day too late was so right. I really think we waited too long, but we just kept trying and trying to make him better, and we couldn't. You will know, but sometimes its just so hard to say OK, now, instead of well, let's just wait a few more days. For us it was 1 month from diagnosis till the day we set him free. I still feel guilty that we let him suffer too long. May you have the strength to make the right decision at the right time.
  8. Have you tried Costco Lamb and Rice? Even though the price has gone up a bit, its still about $27 for 40 lbs.
  9. We have had Toley almost 6 months now. We had some separation anxiety with him too - peeing and pooping, chewing, destructive behavior in the crate (which we ditched after 3 days when he became even more agitated), What helped us, besides practicing alone training on the weekend was a thundershirt and calming cookies which I got at a pet store. It made an immediate difference, he wasn't panting when we left or anything. We used it for about a month straight, and now no longer use it, except if we go out at night. I feel for you, I know it seems so overwhelming when you are going through it. It will get better, you just have to find the right method for your dog.
  10. YES, I have fed the Wingalings to Opie, our bridge angel boy, and now Toley. The bones crumble when smashed. it is perfectly fine to feed this. Our boys have always got add ins to their kibble, and I buy different canned foods to keep it interesting. These bones will not hurt the dogs.
  11. I use canned food all the time for add ins. I have used Trader Joes, Merrick, other brands from a pet store. I would question more why you are feeding Beneful though.
  12. I just ordered Flonase nasal spray (for me) from a New Zealand Phcy. I don't have any prescription drug coverage, and could not pay the ridiculous price they were going to charge me, Plus no doctors visit, just to get the prescription. It was still almost half price from what I used to have for an insurance discount, and that included shipping. Bottom line - if you can get it from another country, go for it.
  13. We ALWAYS make Toley (as we did Opie) pee right before he gets in the car. Its a prerequitsite -I say Go big potty!! And he drains himself in the bush before he is allowed in the car.
  14. I am so sorry for the loss of Gunner and Fritz., I was here a lot in November/December when we were going through our short rib cancer journey with Opie. Its very painful for me to come here, but I check back in, because I know how helpful it was for me to read everyone's advice, support, and then sadly condolences. So Kristin, and Jean, you have my heartfelt sympathies at this horrible horrible time, and know your babies are now pain free and running with our Opie, and all the other hounds lost to the horrible Big C.
  15. Gorgeous boy! DH and I now have our 2nd greyhound, and neither of them liked the crate. Both were destructive in it, and both were left out with free roam of most of the house with the exception of the kitchen/dining area, where we have birds. They both preferred that, and were / are good boys. Your guys seems to be adjusting fantastically!
  16. I went through the same thing with Opie, and his lump was on a rib. It too seemed hard and embedded in the tissue. Needle biopsy was inconclusive. I would do xrays and full biopsy. We did the waiting 2 week thing, and the lump was growing. We took xrays. Our vet took a chunk out of the lump, and the cells were still hard to pinpoint, although it appeared to be some type of cancer. The earlier you know what you are dealing with, the better your chances of helping Murphy. Praying that you get a good diagnosis.
  17. I bought one for Toley, because he is a chewer, and he is not sure what to do with it. It does have the ends cut off, so he can see the marrow. He just carries it around in his mouth from bed to bed.
  18. I am so sorry, its never easy, even when its the best thing to do. And easy journey for Milky Way, and hugs for you.
  19. I used the calming cookies for Toley - he at 6 of them, but they were pretty small. I also gave him rescue remedy, and used a Thundershirt. The combination worked well for his SA. After a few weeks I started less of the cookies, and doing away with the rescue remedy. Finally after about 4 weeks, took off the shirt and used jammies for a week. Then nothing. He is a good boy now, when he knows we are leaving he jumps up on the bed in the spare room, and sleeps most of the day there.
  20. I love it too, and have used it on both dogs. I keep the gel and spray on hand at all times.
  21. We used the Thunder Shirt for Toley and his SA when we first got him in January. It made a HUGE difference. We actually let him wear it all day for about 3 weeks while we were at work, to make sure he was comfortable and secure at home alone. Then I transitioned to jammies for about a week, then nothing. Now if we go out at night (rare, but it happens) I will put the shirt on him. We tried one night without, and he was very agitated. Next time with the shirt he just layed down in his bed.
  22. THAT is just horrible looking! We don't have these here in the Seattle area (well, not that I have seen) but they are as close as Oregon. We do have some big A#$ spiders here that make their appearance all over outside in late September - I always think they are auditioning to be Halloween decorations. I DO HATE spiders!
