The 1st is Sara and the 2nd is Max and Sara, hopefully they came out ok., small pictures will have to learn how to make them bigger, I am technologically challenged!!!!
  4. Welcome to greyhound motherhood, you are gonna love it! I had 2 cats when I brought my 1st grey, Max here, who is 80lbs. and he was "cat safe"! He was introduced w/out a muzzle, he was afraid of them, one of the cats hissed and thru a paw at his nose and the other used to wait for him to walk out onto the deck and she would attack his ankles, poor baby! I got Sara a year later, she was not intimidated by them, but not interested. I got a kitten after one of my cats passed away this spring and Sara was soo interested, thinking it was a sqeaky toy, I had to keep telling her no and watching behavior. I always watch and supervise them when in the fenced yard, because fast moving objects are of great interest to a grey! Kitten(Rascal is 6 months now) and he is a terror, jumps in Sara's face once in awhile but he also sleeps near them in my bedroom, so they are getting used to him. My advice, pay attention to body language, when the ears are up and tail is wipping, high interest.
  5. Hey Aerosmom, So glad to get an update on Cricket, sounds like she is doing much better, it's great that you are persistent with her care and seeking alternate solutions, unfortunately vets even the "specialists" are only humans and they take guesses at this stuff, if one thing doesn't work, they try something else, meanwhile our fur babies suffer w/all the meds they are trying. If Sara hadn't had such a miraculous recovery wth MVR in Woburn, I would not continue chemo, she will have her last treatment (10th month of this) the week before Christmas! I pray that it (GME) does not return. I think swim therapy is awesome and Cricket probably loves it, she sounds like a greyt gal with wonderful spirit, most humans would complain about all the pain and suffering she has gone through. Keep fighting for her, she's fighting too, as one of my friends said to me " she is not about to give up the great life you have given her". she loves you. Many prayers for you and Cricket from one who has been down this path.
  6. Greyt news, I love happy endings, continued paryers for Bodie's good health, I have one more chemo tretment the week before Christmas w/my Sara, sounds like OSU is a wonderful place.
  7. I do remember meeting you while I was there freaking out when Snickers's remaining front leg was seeping blood. Not my best moment. Usually I am a little calmer. We ended up losing Snickers just before her fourth chemo -- either a seizure or a blood clot. I have been at the vet referral hospital a little too often this year. It sounds like Dr. Troxel thinks it's something like GME because the spinal tap didn't show any signs of cancer. It's been five days since the cytarabine and Cricket is a little better, still very wobbly. Did it take your Sara a long time to bounce back? How old is she? Cricket doesn't have seizures, and the inflamed areas were only in her spinal cord as far as what was visible on the second MRI. I am feeling a little more hopeful today. When I went to take Aero and Kanga Roo for a walk today, Cricket stood up and came to me as if she was going too, but then she fell. I am going to take her to her favorite place where the squirrels run all over the pathway soon. I bet it would really boost her mood. How is your Sara doing now? I just made an appointment for swimming so Cricket can build up her muscles and strength again. The prednisone really wastes her muscles and it's been well over a week with very little activity. Who is Sara's doctor? Cricket's is Dr. Troxel, who has been great. I was really impressed at how sweet the vet techs were to Cricket when she stayed there overnight. Do you drive to Woburn for the cytarabine injections? I guess you have the option of administering them at home too, but I was a little leary of my ability to do it right. Thanks for your words of encouragement! Hi, I am so sorry that Snickers didn't make it, I read here daily but don't post ofen, I cried the day I saw her at Ma Vet, she is at peace now. Sounds like Cricket is doing better, the Techs are so nice there, they treated Sara w/the same kindness, she was a patient for a week there, in the same corner (Suite) the largest they have.Yeah I have had some of my worst and best moments at MVRH in Woburn, when I 1st brought Sara to see them, I was referred by my regular Doctor in Hudson , NH, she went from walking wobbly, to having seizures, to falling and having body tremors. After 2 days on prednisone, my husband who travels almost every week came home before flying to Mylasia and insisted we take her home, she could barely walk on her own so I carried her up and down stairs to go to potty every 2 hours, in snow, she proceeded to have 4 seizures in a row and screamed in pain the whole way back to Woburn. Dr. Silver is her neurologist and was not in, Dr Troxel put her on phenabarbitol, valium, she was on 2 antiboitics before they ruled out viral and they started her on Cytarabine too. It took only 3 days on cytarabine before she could get up on her own but she needed help to walk, towel and I used a harness, she quicly within day of coming home, walked without help. She had fallen down deck stairs so would not attempt them, within 2 weeks she would walk down them, had to put treads on them. Sara turned 6 in June, she had multiple inflammation in her brain and spinal column, diagnosed as multifocal GME, her cerebellum which is her balance was the area of most of the inflammation. She has made a miraculous recovery, she still has ctytarbine injections, every 5 weeks, waiting for Dr Silver to call me today to possibly discontinue them. I never would have believed that she would walk or run and chase my other grey again but she does. I was a basket case when this started last March and now soo grateful that I made the decision to treat her, it was really a difficult place to be in, we had adopted her only a year and a few months before she got sick but she is the joy in my life, loves her toys and walks every day, a true miracle!! I am praying for Cricket to have the same miracle Sara has, she is in the right hands and sounds like you and your family really love her, it makes a huge difference. I live in Pelham, Nh about a half hour from Woburn, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help, robertaac@comcast.net
  8. Many prayers to you and Cricket, I just read most of the story and wanted to add my encouragement, one of my greys, Sara was dignosed w/GME @ the Ma. Vet Referral Hospital in Woburn in March of this year and she is still having cytarabine injections, she was on the prednisone and phenabarbitol for 6 months. She is doing great, may be ending the cytarbine and hoping the symptoms don't return as GME is not curable. I think I may have run into you when you were coming in w/Snickers and I was leaving w/Sara. I know how painful it is to go throught the emotional roller coaster ride, it's o.k. to feel crazy, hang in there!! Love the candy corn clollar.
  9. Many prayers are being sent your way, being loved by you and your family will make a difference in his life, hoping for the best for Craiger.
  10. Just wanted to throw in my experience, I have a female grey(Sara) on prednisone since March, she has a brain disease(GME) and she was on 30 MG every 12 hours (2 times a day- so 60 MG a day, she was peeing every 1.5 - 2 hrs and phenabarbitol and antibiotics and pepcid !! It was bad, she lost weight and muscle & went from 65 lbs to 57, but within 3 weeks of her being on it and coming home, she gained back all her weight and then some and she is now tapered to 10 mg every other day, I did it in 2 week increments and she is much better. She has chemo every 4th week and low doses of the pred and phenabarb daily but she is much better. Hang in there, it's really tough to watch them breath heavy, as he gets weaned off of it, he will improve, many prayers to you from New Hampshire!!
  11. I just read your post on Jane and it sounds like all the symptoms of GME - which is a form of meningitis/encephalitis - a brain disease. My female grey -Sara who was sick was diagnosed in March w/it, she presented w/ lethargy 1st, loss of balance, tremors and then seizures, loss of eyesight is another part of the disease. It came on quickly and within a week she could not stand, we had the MRI done and spinal which revealed 3 areas of her brain and spinal column that were inflamed/infected w/ GME. The good news was that she was treated aggresively w/prednisone, phenabarbitol and antibiotics and then a chemo drug - cytarabine which is what turned it @ for her. After 2 days on chemo in combo w/steroids, phenabarb, she could stand again and walk again, 3 weeks later she looked great and she continues to do well 3 months later! She will have chemo for a year and she is on low doses of prednisone and phenabarbitol but it has been worth it, she chases her toys and my male greyhound and loves life. I offer you many prayers, this is so hard emotionally, please fell free to email me : robertaac@comcast.net if you need to ask more questions or just chat.
  12. I have a grey w/the same problem but she has bouts of it, not chronic, she is also on prednisone , phenabarbitol and has chemo(brain disease) every 3rd week so it is hard to tell if it's food, meds, stress ,or all of these combined, the metranidizol clears it up after 3 pills. She gets California Natural Lamb and Rice mixed w/hamburger and rice or chicken w/rice. Also I give her peptobismol at the 1st sign and lay off the treats, unfortuatley I am a softy and she has gone through so much in the last few months w/ her GME (brain disease), I tend to give too many treats - Merrick sells all natutal, I buy online a case at a time of Beef Lung sqares, she loves them! My other grey never gets liquid poop and he eats the same diet she is on. My heart goes out to you, it is hard when they have this problem, lack of sleep is a horrible thing never mind the smell when it's on a carpet. My vet also said that it could be Irritable Bowel Syndrome, like humans get and they treat w/metranizidol. Hope it gets better soon!!
  13. I just wanted to add my prayers too, I met you at the Mass Vet Referral Hospital when you were bringing Snickers in after her amputation and I felt so sad driving home after seeing the pain you and Snickers were in. I just spent the last 3 months in and out of Mass Vet w/one of my greys and she has chemo for a year and is on prednisone and phenabarbitol, she has a brain disease, it is so tough to hear them cry, been through this w/mine having seizures and screaming afterward. I hope Snickers is doing better the last few days since you posted this.
  14. I am new to greytalk(few months)and am crying as I read this because I can feel the pain of having a greyhound that is sick w/an incurable disease. I have 2 grey babies and my female was diagnosed in March with GME which is a form of meningitis encephalitis. She has made a miraculous turnaround from March when she couldn't walk and had seizures, she is on prednisone, phenabrabitol daily and chemo every 3rd week, we have spent numerous time at the Hospital. I will keep you in my prayers, so much pain in the death of God's most beautiful animal but it sounds like she brought you so much joy, Whistler is not in pain anymore and is surrounded by all the other beautiful greys who adopted and loved us humans!!!
  15. Thanks for the welcome, will try to figure out how to post pictures!
