Just remember that greys do very well as . They even do well as . Dogs live in the present. They don't dwell on the past and don't think about the future. As you can see in the videos, they don't see missing a leg, or two, as a handicap, only we do. They play the hand that's dealt them way better than humans do. Dick

Could she have gotten hurt in training? Have you thought about seeing a chiropracter, sometimes the back can cause problems in other places.

Hi Sandy, The dogs must be current on all shots or they can't race. They can't even get into the track without their paperwork being presented by the hauler and in proper order. This is what shots they must be current on. I had a dog that I took from Wheeling to be collected ( have semen drawn). He was gone about two months and needed to have, I can't remember if it was just rabies or all the shots again. He had to be at track in ten days or less for the track to accept the papers. If it took more than ten days, from the day of his shots, he needed shots again. I would say the vast majority of dogs stay at the track they start at or move just one time. So the overkill of shots would be to a small percentage of dogs. Good luck with your dog Dick

Coming from a track I'm sure George is vaccinated. My thought about re-vaccinating now is, what if George gets in a fight with another dog, or nips a person. Chris is going to have to show the dog has his rabies shot. According to Chris it is hard to read, looks like chicken scratch, the NH vet said it wasn't theirs and there is no vet address. I would avoid a potential problem. Can you imagine trying to get this straightend out after the fact? AS far as overvaccinating, here in Massachusetts, if your dog is up to date with his rabies shots and got in a fight with a with a wild animal you are asked to take your dog to your vet for a booster rabies shot.

I'd get him re- vaccinated now instead of waiting. Better to be safe.

There is no reason why he can't and it will be much sooner than you think. Just remember dogs live only in the present. Bodie will never think " oh my god I only have three legs, whoa is me" because they don't think or live in the past. He will play the hand that's dealt him. He will never think about the future and think " I hope I never hurt one of my legs because it will be hard to walk." That thought will never cross his mind because he lives only in the present and that's the way it should be. He just wants to be like every other dog, running, jumping and playing. Glad to see he got through the surgery and hope he has a speedy recovery.

You say the vet has isolated it to one toe, but , does he tell you what it is? I would think after x rays, MRI, EMG and two operations he has wasted enough of your money. When you get the results of the bone scan, if he can't tell you what it is and what he is going to do for it, I'd find a good greyhound savy vet and go from there. It's greyt you will spend the money needed to take care of your pup, you just need better results than this. I agree with KennelMom and turbotaina about corns, I just assumed they had been ruled out if he is a specialist.

Hi Patty, Sorry to hear about your girls problem. You can tell your DH that there are dogs that race with vision in one eye. She will do fine once she adjusts to seeing only out of the one eye. These dogs are tough and adapt to just about anything.

This was posted on GD Interesting, I had no idea. GARLIC Garlic in all forms are today used my many dog owners. It is used for “health reasons”, as taste enhancer but most off all in the spring/summer period as a tick repellent. Besides fresh garlic, powder and capsules that you buy in ordinary shops, it is also added to some dog foods. On top of this special feed additives in powder and tablets are made for dogs. The interesting in this is that there is no research supporting that Garlic should have any positive effects for dogs. There is for humans and horses but not for dogs. On the other hand research results has shown the effects in dogs after consuming garlic. Both spontaneous and permanent damages has been found and proven. Regardless of the quantity of Garlic the dogs has been given and regardless of the time span. Results show the same, Garlic do damage to a dogs health. THIOSULFATE This relates to that all onion sorts, eating onions, flower onions, - raw, cooked or dried – contains something called thiosulfat. Thiosulfate is a nutrition salt, which helps amongst other humans and horses take up B-vitamins. Dogs though, miss the necessary enzyme, which horses and humans have, to break down this substance and it turns toxic. Thiosulfate breaks down the red blood cells cell wall (haemoglobin), which results in anima in large doses of Garlic. If you give a 20,0kg dog about 300g of raw dried onion, it will cause a toxicfication. Even one clove of raw Garlic or a teaspoon of dried garlic powder has the same effect. Even small regular consummation of Garlic is damaging (=1 teaspoon, 1 clove pr day is damaging) The blood is cleaned in the liver which then are permanently damaged by the Thiosulfate as it can not be broken down by the dogs inner organs. SYMPTONS OF TOXIFICATION At acute toxification go to the Vet. Symptoms at large consummations · Vomiting · Weakness/not wanting to move · Loose stoles / scours · High heartbeat · Blood coloured urine · Hyper ventilation · Pale gums / membranes These symptoms do not necessary accrue directly after consummation, not even the same day. They normally show a couple of days after consummation. SMALL DOSES At regular intake of small doses the symptoms are difficult to detect and the permanent liver damage will come creeping. The symptoms can differ from animal to animal. · Vomiting now and again over longer periods · Slow developing fatigue · Slow weight lost · Pale gums / membranes · Poor coat If the toxification is not detected on time, it can be fatal. Most of all it is always damaging to the dog and can give permanent damage. GARLIC VS TICKS Regarding use of Garlic against ticks! It has been shown that Garlic do nothing when it comes to Ticks. Smell, taste or anything from the onion has shown to be an effective repellent of Ticks. On the other hand has research shown that B-Vitamins has that effect. Instead of that spoon full of garlic powder or that clove of garlic, I can recommend that you give a supplement of B-vitamins to protect your dog. This may be the story: WHY DOGS DON’T LIVE AS LONG AS PEOPLE… Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a 10 year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very much attached to Belker and were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there were no miracles for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the 4 year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time. I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animals’ lives are shorter than humans’ lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know why.” Startled, we al turned to him. What came out of his mouth next, stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation.
