Yes to all of the above about energy levels, but she is

    So. Frickin'. Cute.

What size do you think she's going to be as an adult?

Calculators online say she’ll be 60-70 lbs as an adult based on her weight and age now. I’m dying to know as well. I don’t mind if she stays on the smaller side.

I have both my greyhounds on injectable heartworm preventative ProHeart.  A yearly (or twice yearly shot) that does heartworm and other internal parasites like hooks.  It does NOT handle fleas/ticks but we don't have an issue with either.  If we go on vacation I give them a months worth of Simparica.

I have used Simparica Trio for them and wouldn't hesitate to use it again if necessary.  The reports of possible issues in dogs with pre-existing nervous system problems (seizures) can be troubling for owners, but I have personally not had any trouble with any version of this drug.

I forgot there was a heartworm shot too!

Simparica Trio here, but for a non-greyhound. I like a pill (as opposed to a topical like Frontline) and one month intervals (I think Bravecto is 3 months, though I may be thinking of another preventative). I have trouble administering the topical, and I'm concerned about how strong the dosage must be to last 3 months.

BTW, maybe a bit off-topic but do these preventatives actually work at all for ticks? My understanding is they don't actually repel ticks, but will kill them once they bite. Is that correct, and if so do they kill ticks fast enough to prevent TBD transmission?

I think that if I remember correctly from what the vet told me, the tick prevention will kill then when they first bite. For them to transmit a TBD, they need to be hanging out for a while. Do not quote me on this, but I believe that’s what they said.

  4. Hi greyhound experts. We had our last hound, Tessie, on Sentinel heart worm preventative for the years she lived with us. We battled nasty, medication-resistant hooks when she first arrived home as she was a Florida dog. Our airedale has also been on this, we haven't used any tick medication at all with her either.

Little Poppy, our 20 week old lurcher now needs to get on monthly preventatives. I'm debating between Sentinel and adding Bravecto from March-ish through October-ish for ticks (vet recommended) or going with Simpartica, which covers everything. Thoughts on what would be best for her? I'll shoot an email over to the vet about Simpartica asking her opinion on that, but in the meantime wanted to see what the collective greyhound hive was doing these days. We are in the Denver metro area and walk near some wooded trails where ticks can be found, though we haven't had one on our dogs or ourselves, ever. Better save than sorry though.

(We did have a flea issue from one of our dogs staying with a friend a few years ago, and I don't wish to repeat that nightmare of deep cleaning the house again, ever)

About 25 years ago, after my second puppy in 6 months, I said I was never doing puppy again. I did--I brought Daisy home 10 years ago because I couldn't find an adult Std. at the time. She was promptly dubbed The Jerk, or something along those lines. She's still a jerk, but slightly less go-go-go and doesn't nip or jump up.

I’m just baffled at how something so cute can be so….sharp.

Gorgeous girl in an awesome collar!

Any vet cheered on by a fan like Poppy would run her heart out. :beatheart

(The go-go-go spicy phase is ... trying.)

Trying is a different word than I used earlier. Lol. I love her so much. I love her so much. I just keep repeating that phrase. And “this too shall pass”. I think next week we’ll do a day or two of daycare.

She is gorgeous. If we get to Denver Poppy is going to have a visitor. :lol

She’s lucky she’s gorgeous because even after two walks and enrichment tonight (her snuffle mat) she’s still the spicy version tonight. I can’t wait until her baby canine teeth fall out.

  8. For anyone, past or present, who is or has ever been a Bostonian…Lil Poppy would like to wish you a happy marathon Monday. She was cheering our friend Dr Brooke on, who is an e-vet across town from us. Luckily we don’t see her often professionally but we are very proud of her today.

Poppy also wanted to show you her brand new collar that arrived in the mail today. The timing was very appropriate.

I love the mascara, the eyebrows and especially the ring of white around her nose. But why do all greyhound pups look like they are just about to get into mischief?

Because they absolutely 100%, without a shadow of a doubt, are about to do exactly that! Ask me how I know. :banana

I love everything about this thread! 2004 was without doubt the best group of idiots to ever grace (?) (lol) a ball field!

Lil Poppy, Big Papi would be proud, you should message him! Just watch your language, little girl - we know whose city it is ;)

    Poppy :beatheart

I always imagined my Fenway pup in their locker room with them. He was the dog who never really grew up, a perpetual puppy, and who had the best dah of his life nearly every day. He was always so happy. He would have fit right in with that team.

And great idea to message the big guy. I might just do that. I hope he stays in tow for the next week and attends the game on Marathon Monday. Cuz we know whose city this is!

  11. It’s not baseball season until a home run has been hit over the green monster.

This year was a special one celebrating the 20th (!!!) anniversary of the curse reversing 2004 team. Best group of idiots to ever take the field together. And extra special in honoring knuckle baller Tim Wakefield and his wife Stacey who both were taken too young and passed of cancer in the last six months.
If not for this team, my late hound Fenway wouldn’t have gotten his name and neither would late Tessie or sweet Lil Poppy/Papi.

    See…twins!

  12. Echoing what greysmom said here too. Greyhound puppies are….different. We just adopted a little farm girl last month. She’s 18 weeks now and she’ll growl at us to communicate. We will allow her to growl to tell us to knock it off, but at the same time she doesn’t get to tell us what to do.

Some things you might try are using high value treats (peanut butter or lunch meat or cheese) to move her off the couch. Toss a treat off the couch, reinforce by saying “off” as she gets off to go get it.

You could also take her couch privileges away all together

Last you could get a 12” traffic handle to keep on her at all times and use that when you need to move her around.

I can promise you that if she were aggressive, she would break the skin and leave marks. She’s testing you. These pups are stubborn and will push to see what you’ll let them get away with. When Poppy growls at us, we say matter of factly “you are not the boss, I am the boss, knock it off” and we make her do what we want her to do. She’s definitely in her “testing boundaries” phase right now. I look at her every day and thank god that she’s cute so that I don’t open the front door and let her go find a new family. (Super kidding about this, I would never).

We are going to start taking her to doggie daycare twice a week next week to get some of that energy out. A sleeping puppy is a good puppy.

    I LOVE POPPY SO MUCH!!!!!!

And I also really miss my own puppies!!  Treasure this time...

I don’t want to rush the puppy stage but I am looking forward to owning a respectable adult dog some day  :D

The Fast Friends auction has a sweet BRS collar, just sayin' :D

I just decided to look out of curiosity and placed a bid so thank you.

(thud)   Lovely at all stages.  How much did she weigh in pic 1 and how much in pic 2?

But Willa needs a puppy to play with.  You'd get one for Willa, wouldn't you?

She doubled in weight between the two photos! Photo one is 12 lbs (just off the farm and def on the malnourished side) vs 24 lbs of all-you-can-eat spoiled house dog eating high quality kibble with supplements. And she’s still on the skinny side.

The change in her appearance is amazing. She looks not only bigger and less like a puppy, but much more hound-y. Her eyes remain extraordinary.

I bet this is how dads of preteen girls feel. I don’t think I like it.

"Foal knees" is an excellent description.

I'm not surprised about the "decoration" decision--18 week old ears don't usually listen well. :lol

“18 week old ears don’t listen”

    there, fixed it for ya!

I kid. She’s actually a smart cookie who did have brains installed at the factory. She knows sit, down, place, kennel, touch, heel, and in theory knows what come means too.
