  1. Always thought Greyhounds were half cat anyway...
  2. I know I'm late to this party, but they have found that there is a chemical released when cooking lamb that is not found in any other meat - it smells like "stale/wet animal". If you're a chemist, it is 4,6-dimethyl-1,3-oxathiane. Not all dogs react to it, just as not all dogs are afraid of thunder/fireworks. Just FYI.
  3. A pet shop near me offers an anesthesia free dental clinic once a month. Does that do the job? I give raw chicken feet or wings every other day or so, and plaque off on food, but do not brush. Some discoloration/buildup near gum line...
  4. The sad fact is that as our dogs live longer due to better care, many of them will experience CCD - Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. Our 14-y.o. Barney had this, and we were helped a lot by the book "Remember Me?" by Eileen Anderson http://bit.ly/RememberMeBook Lots of greyt suggestions, from food, to medication, to household changes - all to accommodate their changing situation. It's heartbreaking, but you can do some things to make it easier on both of you. Best of luck.
  5. I tried to find a whippet too, when I got to where a greyhound is too big, but very hard to find here (Colorado). I don't dare go to meet 'n greets either because I'm also a sucker for the big goofy boys.
  6. I am looking for Sherry Hall from Forever Greyhound Gifts - does anyone know her? I would appreciate contact info. Thank you!
  7. Read the first chapter "preview" and really like what I read so far - I will be thinking about it until I buy it, so might as well save some time and get it right now
  8. I too hope Spock is eating better. You have lots of suggestions to try, if not! I had to laugh at rsieg's comments, and please add My bowl is underneath the window and the curtains are blowing above my head - I can't eat It is windy outside- I can't eat My "sister" greyhound is gone - I can't eat You forgot the pumpkin - I can't eat
  9. My new foster is a skinny little girl, and doesn't want to eat. Finally got her to eat a scrambled egg, swimming in chicken broth, today
  10. GSOD - are females the only ones to do this???
  11. Is that the same as "chattering" teeth - rapid clicking together of front teeth, sounds almost like purring? They don't touch anything though, just grin and purr
  12. Sometimes dogs eat poop (and other stuff) because they are bored. I have one who prefers to eat dirt over poop, but also eats grass, and plants. He goes out with a turn out muzzle with stool guard every time. He gets a super premium food with supplements, so I doubt it's nutrition related. I think he may have a slightly upset tummy and is trying to eat something (anything) to soothe it (just my guess). I'm glad it's not stones, but stool guard is the only answer I've found so far.
  13. Something that helps Sunny for thunder anxiety is Calms Forte - I get the tablets at the local vitamin store. I give him 3 tabs when a storm is approaching. Also use Rescue Remedy if it sneaks up on us. He has a safe spot in the spare room on the floor between the foot of the bed and the closet. I have a DAP diffuser there, that may help a little. He also wears a DAP collar during the thunderstorm season (each one works for about a month). None of these helps relieve his terror during fireworks, though, so we got a scrip for acepromazine - helps take the edge off his extreme fireworks fear. Good luck - Sue
  14. Sending more prayers and healing thoughts for Tessa...
  15. I'm certainly not a doggie dentist, but I am one of those people who used HP for many years as a mouthwash, until my horrified dentist told me to stop (daily use is hard on the enamel, I think). It is very effective to induce vomiting but only if the dog swallows it. So, if you are only using it sparingly, and on a gauze to rub teeth, I think it would be OK. Again, don't quote me, I am not a verterinary professional, but I would try it. Just
  16. Aww, poor baby, she is so beautiful! That is quite an e-collar - can she lay down in it? After Sunny had his leg reconstruction surgery, we had trouble with the incision/stitches healing too, he thought he could not lay down with the Bite Not collar, so he stood up/walked around until he was falling asleep on his feet - here he is butt on the sofa, almost asleep. Poor guy, he did eventually heal though and all is fine 2 years later. If we ever have to do it again, I am going to make one like Mangosmom described - I think he would tolerate that much better. The BenGay is also a greyt thing to know about.
  17. Many prayers and healing thoughts coming for your beautiful boy, Canyon.
  18. Colorado Greyhound Adoption has put together the most comprehensive dog first aid kit around...and you'll spend less buying it from the CGA store than you would spend on a mediocre kit someplace else. $25 buys you the whole thing. Even better, the CGA store will soon be carrying supplies that you can replenish your kits as you use them. Check it all out at www.cgashop.com . There's even a greyt basic first aid book written by Claudia Presto of Greyhound Gang with helpful tips to decide when you need to get to the vet right away, and when you could treat at home. The kit is lightweight and easy to carry, and there's room to add things like peroxide and bottled water, and any medications you need to carry. Do yourself and your hound/s a favor, maybe you don't need a first aid kit right now, but think about a time when you could use it, and what could happen if you don't have it. In many cases, having spent $25 on the kit now will save you a trip to the emergency vet that might cost you hundreds. Even if you do have to go to the vet, you will be able to get your hound there in a lot better shape than if you didn't have the first aid kit and the book to help you know what to do. It's an easy decision when you look at it that way. www.cgashop.com and then go to greyhound supplies, and you are there. Thanks for looking and thanks for your support.
  19. I'm so sorry for your loss of your sweet boy, Tanner. And for your girlie too, greyhoundlov. We never have them long enough, but it's better than to never have them at all.
