  1. I'm so sorry --- and still hoping that you're wrong.
  2. Yipppee!! I'm so glad to hear Soul is feeling better!!
  3. my vet told me to make my own little pill pocket out of cheese or a quarter slice of bread -- you'll still have to shove it down the throat (because you'll never be able to give Billy cheese or bread as a treat again if he takes a bite of THAT!), but you can get it down him without a big problem. good luck!
  4. Did Zoe rest well last night? How's the little girlie feeling today??
  5. thanks everyone -- Last night (10h post-treatment) was the first night this week that we all got some sleep without multiple emergency yard trips!!! YEAH! Thank you for sharing your experience -- it sounds like I'll be making a change in my yard pick-up habits [picking up the poop is usually pretty easy, since we do lots of walks anyway & there isn't much for the yard except the early morning and late night rounds -- but I'll need to get in the habit of picking it up more than once per week]. Thanks for the new info on Interceptor -- Baby was just tested (2w ago) for heartworm and Riley goes this week -- I'll check with the vet on switching them both over to Interceptor (and see if they'll take this unopened box of Heartguard back so that we don't have to wait to switch). thanks!! julie
  6. Baby, my little Roadkill queen, picked up hookworms sometime this week . I put both hounds on the dewormer (Riley's not showing any signs of the little buggers, but I see no reason to go through multiple rounds of this, even though I almost CHOKED at the cost of the treatments!) I've done a slightly early yard pickup of all of the leaf/mulch along the fenceline today (where both houndies do their business), and have done a close walk through the track yard for any overlooked diarrhea patches (from the last 2 nights' urgent trips). I'm also getting all of their stuffies washed (Riley takes them to the yard to demonstrate his ferocious hunting abilities). Is there anything else that I should be doing to prevent recurrence? The info from the vet said there were yard products that should probably be used that wouldn't hurt grass (hah -- now that I've got my first grey who likes to run, there is no grass in my mud pit), but they didn't offer any recommendations nor did they try to sell me any. Any advice on whether its needed (and what to use/get)? thanks! Julie
  7. Oh no -- prayers and hugs!!! Please keep us posted!!!
  8. Just wondering how Buddy was doing today ...
  9. Many, many prayers for Clark -- and gentle hugs for both of you.
  10. I'm so very very sorry ... gentle hugs from Riley and Baby and me
  11. Dabones is truly blessed to have an angel like you loving him ... I'm so sorry about the news.
  12. Good girl, Ember!!!!! We're all so proud of you!!!
  13. I'm so sorry for you, and glad that she knew how much she was loved. Paige and Picadilly are showing her all of the good spots to play now ...
  14. I was just getting ready to post myself ... I let Riley get his tail caught in the door on Saturday night ... blood everywhere (to be expected), but I made the trip to the evet ... they attempted to snip & clean the torn tissue & let it heal 'naturally', but when they got to see the damage (3-4" of torn skin down to bone from apparently 2 separate tears, with torn ligaments), they determined that partial amputation was a better course of action. I was given informal advice about how a dog's tail will heal itself (uh ... the term 'falling off' was mentioned during the conversation ), but personally wasn't able to handle the care that I believe would have been required (changing the bandages and keeping my other hound away from it), so this was a good course of action for me (as I still cry when I think of the pain Riley's in right now). My choice was expensive (not quite mortgage payment, but probably second-mortgage size) -- due in part, I'm sure, to the out-of-hours e-vet timing (yep, surgery at midnight on Saturday night). I'm so sorry for Izzy's injury!!! Good luck!!

    Izzy Is Gone.

Hugs to you ... Izzy is now pain-free.
  16. non-skid mats on every tile and hardwood floor that he might need to walk across ... I like the inexpensive 3 x 5 foot ones at Kmart & Target... small & manageable (both around the room house and to throw in the washer). Bathmats can work too ... much more cushy, but so much smaller (and not as 'livingroom'-like).
  17. Thank you, Donna (and all) ... I have some lovely pictures of Paige in her little Red Hat Society hat, including one beautiful hand-drawing that a friend made me. She looks so dignified (we'll never tell, will we?)
  18. On Thursday, I had to help Paige to the bridge ... she had had what appears to be a stroke, and while this wasn't the first time she had struggled in the last 6 months, the fact that she let me carry her where she needed to go told me that she was just too tired to go on, and while her spirit was still willing, her frail little body just couldn't keep working for her. She would have been 13 in September. Paige came to me weeks afer her 11th birthday, having been taken from a bad situation weighing a pitiful 32 #. She wasn't happy in her foster home, and while they cared for her greatly, they knew she just couldn't spend the rest of her days growling and snapping at every dog that moved. Well, to the day she died, she growled and snapped at every dog that moved. We laughed about that, and Riley learned that Paige was all bark and no bite (not that she didn't WANT it to be all bite). I am still amazed that my friend's 7 hounds accepted all of her growliness without one bit of retaliation ... they KNEW she was an old, crotchety girl who couldn't see all that well and just didn't want to be hurt. Except Yaz, who wanted Paige to be his best friend (poor Yaz ... he never DID get his wish). I agonized over this ... shouldn't I just increase the number of chiropractic visits or SOMETHING? But when her heart finally stopped beating, she let me know that she was at peace ... no pain, no worries, and most importantly, she KNEW that she was loved and had spent her last years being cared for like the princess that she was. Goodbye my Paige ...
  19. Welcome from a Hokie from Chicago -- I worked in Roanoke in the late 80's ... gosh I miss the hills!
  20. Congratulations on your new addition - Jumpy is beautiful!!
  21. We're so glad you liked all of the prezzies! Had a greyt time putting a package together, and a wonderful friend of mine made the beautiful collars! Love the pictures!!!! Merry Christmas!! Julie, Paige & Riley
  22. Oh my Oh my ... to my surprise ... don't tell Riley while I answer your cries! Riley was previously known as Grey's Snow Storm. His 4th birthday approaches ... born December 8, 2003. I'll have to get help to get pictures posted (cause I'm not real quick with this technology stuff) ... the picture on Greyhound-data is not bad, although he has gone a bit white in the muzzle since that picture was taken a year ago. Riley is a fit 64 pound boy (he's about the size of a medium-sized girlie greyhound), who seems constantly hungry. He is a recovering counter-surfer, and will do almost anything for a treat. Treats to him include chicken jerky treats and Marrow Bones. Oh yes, and Paige's special food. Pigs ears are considered a dietary indiscretion (um ... that would be the term my vet used ... if you don't know what it implies, let me just ask that you not send Riley any pigs ears unless you also send Immodium and wetnaps). He's not terribly interested in rawhides, but will rip the wrapper off of a Dingo bone in a heartbeat. Riley likes grunters and honkers and such. Squeekers are fine, but he gets bored quickly by them. Grunting Hedgehogs are his FAVORITE ... although last Saturday he got a buzzard that grunts which he stole out of my bag before I even got its tags off, and he hasn't let it out of his mouth since. He likes to honk and shake stuffies (um, and their livelier fascimiles, but that's frowned upon - very messy), but he's not interested in seeing what kind of stuffing is inside, so he doesn't need extra-tough toys. He isn't enamored by gigglers ... don't know about screaming monkeys because he's never seen one. Riley lives with his mom and 12yo greyhound sister ... he does seem to get lonely sometimes for playing with others his own age (Paige's idea of playing is snuggling under the covers), but he has frequent playdates at Auntie Karrilynn's zoo. Riley isn't interested in getting a playmate (well, he might be, but his mommy isn't ... so no GURs from Secret Santa!). Riley likes all colors ... his favorite is red, although he looks mighty handsome in anything bright. Oh wait, Paige just told me that Riley isn't fond of girly pink (but that if you happened to know who HER secret santa is, pink is her absolutest favorite color). While we are not terribly into sports, we do live in the suburbs of Chicago so Bears and Cubs themed items are always appropriate. My family lives in Wisconsin, so Packers and Brewers items are also alternatives for when we have to make peace with mommy's family (they seem to like teeny tiny yappy dogs better ... they keep repeating the phrase "big teeth and big poop" - not sure what that means since those 2 things seem to be on opposite ends of the dog, but that's family!)
  23. thanks for asking ... and for the responses! My 2 are both new to me since last Fall, and I wasn't used to the grazing ... I may give up my lawn service if this keeps up (of course, that would leave all the dandelions ... apparently my pups don't consider dandelions as yummy as crabgrass!)
