Update On Lena's Condition

Well I got back from the vet about a 1/2 hour ago. The vet believes that Lena has Lumbosacral Disease which she said has a similar feeling of a slipped disk in a human. We got an x-ray that didn't show anything, that was the only one they could get because she was so uncomfortable. Also if her condition does not improve I will have to take her in and have her sedated so they can get a few more x-rays. The good news is that there are no signs of bone cancer! They gave her a shot of dex (a steroid) and sent me home with Tramadol and Prednisone. If she does have this disease she will have to be on this medication for the rest of her life. Which is fine as long as she can live a normal life which according to the vet she should be able to. She still isn't walking well it took us 5 to 10 minutes to get her back inside the house and I did most of the walking for her. Just some continued thoughts and prayers for her full recovery would be nice. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. I will keep you all posted on her progress over the next few days.

:wubsite because everyone is so helpful and thoughtful and full of reassurance. Thanks again!

Sounds like you are on the right track with her. THANK GOD, there is no cancer. This DOES sound just like my friend's dog. She is doing VERY well now!

Good luck, love and hugs!

So glad to hear there's no sign of cancer. I hope she starts to feel better and get around better with the pred and the tramadol. Keep us posted.

Sending prayers. I'd try one of these vets. If her xrays are clear, acupuncture and chiropractic :)

George has LSS.

Or he has it to the best of the specialists diagnosis without a $2,600 MRI. I asked her if the treatment would differ if she confirmed it with MRI and she admitted it would NOT so no MRI (I don't have $2,600 to spend on a diagnostic test that changes nothing).

LSS is a degenerative disease. I've not heard of it presenting suddenly and so dramatically--which doesn't mean the vet is wrong, but George's x-rays showed the classic narrowing of the spinal column down near the tail.

His course of treatment is to remain thin and as muscular as possible (walks, no running), Deramaxx, and Tramadol as needed.

So far so good.

I did buy a sling for when he needs help going up the stairs, but so far he is OK.

His only real symptoms are a hitch in his gait and occasionally his back paws knuckle over.

I hope she is feeling better soon, and that your x-rays are helpful.

Dr. Stack has a great article on LSS written for the laypersont to understand.

Our LS boy had an xray that showed a narrowing of the spinal column as well, and he dropped his butt like a stone when our vet did the manual test Dr. Stack recommends. Tramadol and Depo shots did wonders for him, but owners have had success with varying treatments, so if that's what Lena has you may need to experiment to find what works best for her.

I, too, have not heard of LS coming on suddenly...it is a degenerative disease.

Good luck with our girl! :goodluck

It is funny you mention that article... I just got an email from a friend with a link to that article. I also sent an email to Dr. Bill Feeman who I usually see (he wasn't in yesterday). I am hoping that he can shed some light on all of this... He is one of those "greyhound guru" doctors.

I spoke to my husband a few minutes ago and he said that Lena was able to stand and eat her breakfast with out getting shaky or falling down, so that is a good sign!

Cody had it.

I used a sling with her when it was bothering her - helped with the peeing/squatting...

Acupuncture really helped her (but she was on prednisone for the rest of her life too) so it's worth a try if there's someone near you!

It seems that Lena is doing really well on the Prednisone and the Tramadol!!! She is doing much better. John informed me that she went up and down the 4 stairs to go outside and go potty twice on her own so far today! After the second time she even waited for her treat before she went to lay down on her bed (he said she was a little wobbly while waiting, but the point is that she waited)!

Thanks for the continued thoughts and prayers everyone!
