Hello!

Sorry if this isn't the correct place to put this query, but I'm new to GreyTalk and this seemed like a reasonable place.

I've had my ex-racer hound since January (from a rescue centre) and he's settling in perfectly - he's a dream with other dogs, people and children and has made my first-time-dog-ownership easy in general (other than some pretty killer separation anxiety that we're working on!).

When meeting other greyhound fans out and about, I always get asked about his racing history - I did some research when I first bought him home, but was unable to locate anything more specific than a guess at some litters he may have been from.

He's tattoo'd in both ears, which I understand means he's from Ireland (the rescue place told me as much) His tattoos read: NB (his right) LVH (his left) and it would be great if someone could let me know any other resources they can recommend. I've been through the ones google throws up, but I don't know anything about the racing industry so that's as far as I've got

I'd just be interested to know, as everyone seems to have an opinion on how much of a champion he does or doesn't look ("his teeth are too good to have been involved in racing at all!" "his paw tendons are in too good nick" "he's super muscular - must have been a champion!" "he has almost no prey drive- can't have been any good")

Although, to me he is just my champion bed hogger, dinner stealer, doorbell squealer and roacher!

:welcome2 to greytalk from me and Ken (who is also an Irish dog).

You've probably already tried the tattoo search on greyhound-data http://www.greyhound-data.com/earmark.htm

I just did and 'no dog with those initials known' came up. So you will need to email/phone the Irish Coursing Club who hold the stud book for Irish greyhounds:http://irishcoursingclub.ie/

It may be that he never raced - or could it be that you are a letter out on the tattoos? Sometimes they blur with time. Try shining a torch from behind the ear to check.

We'd love to hear more about your boy - what's he called? - and see some photos!

"It is also to be noted of every species, that the handsomest of each move best ... and beasts of the most elegant form, always excel in speed; of this, the horse and greyhound are beautiful examples."----Wiliam Hogarth, The Analysis of Beauty, 1753.

It happened with my british dog. If I look up his tattoo number, he doesn't show up on greyhound-data. Luckily I knew his racing name and he is in fact registered and raced and he had a profile and everything. It's like they don't always register the tattoo numbers,

Definitely send an email, they will be able to tell you :) Or maybe the adoption agency know his racing name and you could look him up.

His tattoos definitely look more like NB LVH but are pretty difficult to read (I've asked other people to check that's what they make it, and everyone's in agreement)

According to the rescue centre he's almost 4 now, and was surrendered to them as an active racer last year, so I assume he had to be used for something in order to have been kept so long? But he's the messiest runner I've ever seen in my life - legs all over the place, clumsy as anything. Someone told me he may have been used for breeding, as he's got a good build and lovely temperament - but it seems unlikely to me they'd use such a clumsy dog with a low prey drive for breeding...

He's called Ghillie (Bob in the rescue centre, but he wasn't bothered about that so nor was I) and is the soppiest creature around - at first he was anxious around little dogs (understandable as he's never seen anything like it before) but now will trot around baby-sitting friends puppies very proudly! He's slowly coming out of himself still - started with his messy zoomies, quickly progressing to morning roaching and only very recently trying his hand at rooing! Rather than roo he prefers a ludicrous high pitched squeal of joy (which is even more ridiculous coming out of such a big beast)

Here are some links to pictures of him enjoying the glorious (and not so glorious!) British Summer

Interesting you say that, Ducky. I had no problem accessing Lulah62's photos, but when I try to access smurfette's, our Barracuda filter blocks whatever site she's using. And to give you an indication of how strict it's setup, I can't even access the Powerball site - says it's a gambling site & blocks it. LOL!

Ah that's odd! I can't seem to embed images, so that's why I've had to link...

Any luck with these?

He is a handsome chap! Terrible anthropomorphism, but we walked past a couple of lady greyhounds at the weekend and they all stopped and stared at him as we went past - their owners even commented on how the girls were dumb struck by his looks- very funny!
