I found out Shanti LOVES apples!!! Do they feed these as a special treat or something at the tracks or kennels? Nala thought I was stinking nuts to give her apples and spit them out. Asti thought if Shanti is eating it, I must have it too! She worships the ground Shanti walks on.

Asti roaches and eats apples just like her big sis.

I do not know if they are used at the track. But all our dogs love apples. They get them as a treat. You just can not give the core or seeds to them. I also buy organic dried apple rings to put in their treats that I make for them.

I did core, slice it and remove the seeds. Shanti was in hog heaven! Who would have thought!?!?!?

Apples here too. Every time someone eats an apple Merlin must have a piece or he won't leave us alone. He actually stands there and drools.

I think I heard somewhere that they give apple sauce at the track and sometimes peaches. In any case, my dogs love apples! They also love bananas and carrots :-)

It might be the crunch. Our greys LOVE cabbage, presumably for the same reason. I can't imagine it's the flavor component.

Just be careful how much you give...Nellie has a pretty tough tummy, but to many apples leads to much softer poo.

Be sure to core them and also keep the bag of apples where they cannot get to them because if they get into the stash then you have a trip to the Emergency Vet.

I doubt they use apples as treats (generally) at the track, but every dog we've ever had in our family (mine is the first Greyhound) has loved apples!

I have never had a dog that liked them before. It cracks me up. I don't give her them very often but I am amazed at how pleased she is with them! Nala was so NOT pleased.

Would you be willing to share your special apple treat method? I would love to try it. I want to make treats, but I am not sure what will be good for my guy. Thank you!

I will have to try Apples with Maddie. She loves, strawberries, raspberries, and bananas, and also marshmellows all of which I give to her in limited quantities. She just has found out that she likes cooked carrots not the raw ones and a small slice of tomato. (the tomato is only given to her once in a blue moon)

You can just cut the apples in wedges, and give to your grey like a regular treat!

Be careful not to give the core or seeds. There's something toxic in the core, I forget which part, but anyway, just don't give the core. I like to hold the whole apple for Henry, and let him gnaw on it whole. I am careful not to let him get to the core of course. He's so cute to watch gnawing at the apple in my hand.

(I usually have to take the first bite of apple though, to give him a place to start)

It's the seeds that are toxic.

Apples, bananas, oranges, watermelon, cantelope, peaches, pears - if it's fruit, they LOVE it! It's a treat in small quantities so we avoid the poo issues as well as all the drooling! Two of my girls are obedience school graduates and they "sit" without being asked as if to say "See Mom??? We're sitting pretty, so can we PLEASE have some of whatever you're eating???"

Nova loves apples too. I carefully core it, leaving it whole (doughnut apple?)

. Then I roll it to her. She has a blast, she chases it, tosses it, then after a bit, she gobbles it up.

Seeds are *slightly* toxic. They contain cyanogenic glycosides, which turn into cyanide in the stomach when they hit acid. I'm not sure how much it would take to kill a dog- certainly more than several apples- and animals build up a tolerance to them over time.
