Full Version: What Kind Of Bone Or Treat Can I Leave Lego With Unsupervised?
Greytalk > Greyhound Life > Food and dietary discussion

Lego eats fine and loves treats like biscuits and stuff like that but anything that takes a little work or time, he wants nothing to do with. Kongs go untouched regardless of what I put in them and I've tried stuffing them with everything under the sun. The one thing that he goes insane for though are rawhides. Give him a rawhide and he'll curl up in a corner and naw on it forever and generally ends up tired somewhere along the line and falls asleep... but everywhere I read says that you can't leave your dog alone with a rawhide unsupervised. So can anyone suggest something that might grab his attention and keep him busy like a rawhide does? Thank you.

I just don't let mine chew anything without supervision, just to be on the safe side.

Walter did choke once and I literally had to shove my hand down his throat and pull the offending piece out. I'm not sure what would have happened if he's been on his own.

I leave a nylabone for the foster dogs because sometimes they don't like to be left and it will occupy them and tire them out.

Milkbones!

Other than kongs which you siad your dog doesn't like, the only thing is milkones but they go fast. If you keep leaving the kong, you may be surprised one day!

Natural bones and cow hooves work here.

We love our kong here, but maybe a game of hide and seek with milk bones. I put them in different places - so far she has always found them and it keeps her busy for a little bit.

I leave a couple of Nylabones also - the "durable" type that is not meant to be consumed. Sometimes I smear a bit of peanut butter, cream cheese, or liverwurst on the chewed ends to make them more interesting.

I feed raw but would not give any raw bones while I wasn't there - I like to be within earshot in case something goes wrong. I would apply the same theory to rawhides. They may be fine when you can supervise, but I wouldn't want to come home to find something bad had happened.

Does Lego need something to occupy him for a long time while you're gone? My grey has our leaving routine down - I give him a couple of cookies, he eats them, and goes back to his bed to chill.

The problem that we have is that I work night and my wife works days so someone is always home... he doesn't even blink when my wife leaves for work in the mornings, same with me at night... but he used to freak out and howl when we'd leave any time other than for work. We figured out that if we baby gate him in our bedroom, he does much much better but still looks a bit nervous so I'd still like him to have something that will occupy his time.

Hide pieces of kibbles in obvious places so he can find them throughout the day.

Make the kong super easy to eat- don't freeze it at first and don't stuff it so much that he has to work for it. Try giving it to him while you're home. Right now he's probably associating it with you leaving so it's become a cue for his anxiety to start.

I'd probably feel comfortable leaving a dehydrated sweet potato chew with mine. I get mine from Fritofeet here on GT. They only take a few minutes to eat, but you'll be able to get out the door while he's chewing it.

Also be aware that many pups have anxiety induced anorexia and won't eat until the SA is under control. Definitely still leave something out for him, but it might take a bit before he starts to eat it.

Oh, and as for the kong, try putting a little sardine juice into whatever you're stuffing it with. I've yet to see a dog who can resist sardines wink.gif

We have been leaving Lucy with a "busy buddy" toy filled with kibble. It seems to keep her occupied and much more focused than a Kong.
FordRacingRon
After having to Heimlich Leia 3 times, only a kong when we are not around.

If it's rawhide he likes, can you give him a big hunk of super durable compressed rawhide? I would still use a LOT of caution with this, though.

What have you stuffed the Kong with? Fruits or meat? I've really yet to meet a dog who turns its nose on a meat/liver-stuffed Kong...
RedBrindleBoy
I haven't read all the responses, but I don't give my dogs rawhide even when I AM home. How about a raw meaty bone? A good old knuckle bone or long marrow bone will keep any dog interested for hours.

I see he is owned by two adorable kittie - I wonder have you tried a special stuffy he will only have when you go out together besides work?
I also leave the radio on. (soothing quiet talk)
