Full Version: How Many Turkey Necks To Buy?

I finally have the opportunity to buy fresh turkey necks in bulk from a local organic, cage-free farm. They even let me specify what size I want! They only do this once a year as they don't usually dress many turkeys at a time, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I ordered 20 lbs. of the smaller turkey necks, so should get between 30 and 45 necks. I'd like to feed them to my pups twice a week, so that's 4 a week.

I'm thinking I should take advantage of the opportunity to order these, but don't know how long they'll last in the freezer. Should I order 40 lbs? 60???

Thanks! colgate.gif

It is the same for us, that this is the time of year to buy them. I usually get 2-50lb cases for 3 dogs and it lasts us sometimes until next year. Sometimes we do 3 necks a week, and sometimes 6. I do vacuum pack them now, but I have just ziplocked them in the past. The pups don't care if there is a little freezer burn, but properly packaged they last a long time. I'm still feeding beef from 04 that was packaged by the butcher, and the pups think it is great!

Thanks, Sue. That's just what I needed to know. Guess I'll be ordering a whole lot more turkey necks smile.gif

A 40lb case lasts us about a month tongue.gif

Yeah, I have stinky frozen tripe that I got in June of '05. Frozen lasts a long time smile.gif

Duncan goes through 15-20 pounds a month.

Don't worry about freezer burn. We people don't like it, but it doesn't change the nutritional value of the meat. Dogs don't seem to get bent out of shape over it.

The real question is how much freezer space are you willing to use for necks.

Well I feed raw, but the last time I got a bulk order I got 130 lbs. I don't really worry about anything going bad as long as it's frozen - the worst that can happen (short of a power outage) is a little freezer burn, and that doesn't bother the dogs much.

Organic and cage-free turkey necks sound awesome! Are they expensive?

To be honest, I was so excited to be able to get them that I forgot to ask blush.gif lol.gif Their turkeys aren't all that expensive, though, so I'm hoping the necks won't be either.
