I was having a problem recently with Toby throwing up his food, sometimes within 1 minute of him eating. All the food would come back up, undigested. He went to the vet, lab tests came back normal, no blockage, etc.
His vet put him on I/D canned (bland) and then suggested we move to I/D kibble, which we did.
He's now eating the I/D kibble 3 times a day and has not thrown up again. I am feeding him about 3 3/4 cups to 4 cups TOTAL dry food each day, just dividing it into a breakfast, lunch, and dinner serving. After watching him eat, and his lab tests coming back fine, it appears to me that he might have just been inhaling his food too quickly (the boy doesn't seem to chew) and that's why he was throwing up so soon after eating. Does this make sense? Since he's getting the same amt of food as before, just broken down into 3 meals, is there any reason why I can't or shouldn't continue this 3x a day feeding pattern?

I'm all for small meals frequently - doctors say it's good for humans too. I have food in front of my dogs 24/7 and they don't over eat, and they don't get upset tummies. They of course get the extra's in limited amounts, but as far as their kibble - they can eat it when they wish. Not one of them ever eats a cup at a time, it's always a mouthful here, and a mouthful there.

I would feed my dogs four times a day if I could.
If you can feed 3 times a day, by all means go for it. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I feed mine three times daily. Morning, afternoon, and right before bedtime. Never had a problem with that. I think it's easier on their digestive systems that way.

No reason why you can't feed as many times a day as you like but make sure that the total amount is what he should have. Like I give Spencer 3 cups a day - 1 cup in morning and 2 in evening.

I feed three times a day. Breakfast, dinner and before bed. Donovan couldn't go from 6pm to 6:30am without eating. He would wake up in the middle of the night and throw-up bile.
edit to add that D-man gets kongs and stuff during the day to fill his belly and deal with his sa. Of course TC gets the same treats even though he does not have sa. Gotta keep it fair

3x/day here, too! Atticus especially
LOVES LOVES LOVES to eat, so I figure it just gives him more opportunity to be JUBILANT.

we've been feeding Nube 3 X a day since he had bloat in 2006 -- absolutely recommended by our vet.

I used to feed Spud 3x/day. It helped when he had explosive d to feed him smaller meals.
When we added Sadie to the family it went to 2x/day because it was too much for Roy's little brain to handle

Not really, it was just more convenient and Spud's chronic diarrhea had cleared up by that point.

If they are sick, I do feed them three small meals a day

Nellie eats 3x a day, 6am, 5pm, 8pm. It helps to relieve some of her anxiety surrounding food to have a meal later at night so she does not get hungry. She started sleeping through the night thanks to this adjustment.

Whatever works! When I have a dog that needs to gain weight, I often feed 3 times per day. Former foster Big Moe got 3 cups in the morning, 2 cups at lunchtime and 3 cups in the evening to maintain his 92 pounds. Some of the really young, athletic dogs can't maintain weight on anything less than 3 feedings!

I suppose if you're able to be home at lunch time, it's a fabulous idea!
I'm sure George would LOVE being fed three times a day!

I also feed my puppers three times per day. And they are happy as clams about it!

Several years ago, my Indy was on antibiotics 3x/day for allergy issues - so I had to administer with food. Problems resolved, but I kept them on the 3x/day feeding schedule. Also, when I first adopted Indy, he inhaled his food like a total pig, so smaller, multiple feedings were better for him. Also, I moisten their meals, which slows them down a bit.
I feed at 7 am, petsitter feeds lunch midday, and they eat dinner between 7:30 - 8 pm. Keeps them satisfied and content during the day while I'm at work, and makes them sleepy in the evening. They also get a few biscuits during the day.

Ditto. We do the same here. Our big boy, Missile, would puke up a yellow bile a lot in the mornings since his tummy was so empty. Once we divided the dinner meal to allow for a 1/2 cup of kibble rightbe fore bed, it cured the upchucking. Our newbie is on the same plan and it works extremely well for us.

Duncan has breakfast, brunch and lupper (lunch+supper). We're all happy with this arrangement.
Thanks to all the rest of you who shared that your pups eat 3X a day. I thought I was the only one this nuts! I felt like a closet Frequent Feeder. I feel much better knowing there are enough of us to set up a support group......

No, you're not nuts. I admit it....we feed 3x/day too! We've done this for years with all of our dogs, but it's very helpful with Johnny B. He's so big he needs about 4 cups & a can of food a day - much better to divide amongst three meals instead of just two. Sonie I need to watch because she puts on weight easily, so she just gets much less (and a lower calorie food)

A frequent closet feeder

Too funny! And even though I feed Indy and Holly 3x/day plus biscuits, they still act as if I am starving them. Holly used to gak up yellow bile in the morning as well. Her little tummy would gurgle like crazy. Once I started feeding dinner later, no more morning yakking!

Ha ha! I just made myself laugh at my own typo! I meant to write a closet frequent feeder not a frequent closet feeder!

It's been a long day, I guess ...

Leia eats 3 times a day too. I know her brain thinks if mom and dad are eating, so should I be eating. So she eats when we eat.

Feeding 3x/day has been a wonderful thing. Toby stopped throwing up once we started dividing his food up into 3 meals. And as another poster had said, he loves to eat/is overjoyed by eating, so now he gets to be overjoyed 3 times a day instead of 2 times a day!

I feed twice a day, but he eats all day long. He likes to pick. No reason you could not feed 4 times a day as long as he/she is not being overfed.
