Full Version: Shredded Beet Pulp - How Much?

I finally got to the feed store and picked up plain shredded beet pulp. Zella has never been firm, despite several different food trials. The bag isn't very clear as to how to feed it. Zella gets 1 1/2 - 2 cups of kibble with a little warm water twice a day. What should I do with the beet pulp? Do I just mix it in the kibble or should I soak it first? Sometimes I mix in a little wet food with the kibble as a treat. Should I do anything different on those days?

I'm hoping this does the trick. Thanks in advance.

I've always used the chunks, so I don't know about the shredded stuff in terms of how they eat it. You may need to fold it in to some peanut butter or something similar to get them to eat it. I feed dry; I've only fed it "wet" once, and WOW does the stuff bulk out.

I'd start with a teaspoon/meal and work your way up slowly (maybe +1/4 tsp every day) until the desired result is achieved.

Desired END result. Oh, I'm so funny.

I don't know about feeding it to pups, but we always soak it for about 15-20mins before feeding it to the horses. It does triple in size when moisture hits. It might be bad it if suddenly expands that way in their tummies.

AHAHAHAHA that was priceless!

I add about a tablespoon of the dry shreds in each meal. It is supposed to be consumed DRY by dogs, so it helps to absorb extra moisture during digestion.

Hubcitypam told me about Iams green bag for my neighbors shepherd who always was on the loose side, well he does really well on this food, Pam didn't you say "I could bounce them off the sidewalk" ?

It contains more beet pulp then most dog foods.
Flint
Hi Kelly,

Flint gets one rounded tablespoon with his kibble breakfast and I mix in just a little warm water. Let me know how it works for Zella and where did you find a feed store?

Thanks for the squirrel giggle! Oh, and the advice too. I gave Zella about 1/2 a teaspoon to start and she had me up twice during the night with big D. She's been having some issues anyway but not "D". Has this happened to anyone else? Maybe it's just a coincidence? I'm going to wait a couple days and try again.

Marie - Please, let me share with you!! I went to Littleton. Others were closer but Waltham only had pellets and Chelmsford was out completely. If I only use a tablespoon per serving this bag is going to last me til 2019! PM me when you are going to be on a walk and I'll bring you some.

Speaking of trotting out old stories --

Yes I said you could bounce my Rex's poops off the sidewalk on Iams (lamb works too but my guy liked chicken better). lol.gif lol.gif
I tried Nutro sensitive stomach, California Natural, Wellness fish and sweet potato, Natures Recipe Vension and Natural Balance Duck. Nothing out of Rex I could scoop and grumbly tummy that would wake me. One day I got so peeved I tossed a bag of Iams in the cart and called it a day. His poop started firming up the second day into transition and then reached the bouncing stage. smile.gif It's not the greatest food on paper but it sure worked for Rex -- and several others I've told like Maderas neighbor.

lol.gif I think that was why Aaron was basically sending it to people for the cost of shipping.

Ssssh! I just bought a new bag and I have 49.998 pounds to get rid of!

I bought a 40# bag last Fall and gave our members gallon-sized ziplock bags of shredded beet pulp in exchange for a donation of any denomination to our adoption group. I still have about a third of a bag left. Last year at our Christmas party, I passed out about a dozen bags of shreds. Everybody was cracking up, laughing about what the bags looked like ("Mary Jane") and hoping they wouldn't get stopped by the cops on the way home. I did go to trouble of clearly labeling each bag.

"Beet Pulp" for the people you like, and "White Widow" or "NYC Diesel" for the ones you don't!
