Full Version: Uh, How Long Should Frozen Necks Last?
Greytalk > Greyhound Life > Food and dietary discussion
Gideon
I've chopping them in half and giving to frick and frak. Well Tankala tears through them frozen solid in 2-3 minutes max. Duke takes 15 minutes or so.

Is this normal?

Frank can dispatch of a whole frozen turkey leg in under five minutes (and yes, he chews them thoroughly!) He has some very strong jaws and just crunches thru the bone. I would bet a turkey neck wouldn't last two minutes!
BlackandBrindle
Depending on how big and what kind of chewer he is, yes, it could take him that long.

Sadie takes much longer to eat her RMBs than Spud does.

Zoe is usually almost finished with her meal before the rest even have theirs in front of them. She is just very efficient. She chews well, but fast. Dante is much slower and if someone is going to swallow things that aren't chewed as well - it's him! Go figure. He just likes to savior his meals, I guess.

Eric is our resident turkey neck destroyer, with T at a close second. However, Sahra takes much longer especially with the tom turkey necks (about 1lb each). I think it just depends on the dog.
Gideon
Well, Tankala is a big one and his jaws and head are larger than many greyhounds I've seen. I just thought being frozen solid would offer a little resistence.

Whidbey can go through a full turkey neck in under 10 minutes, easily. I sit with him whenever he has one, so I know he's chewing thoroughly smile.gif He's like a grey vacuum cleaner with the turkey necks, just had one this morning.
Ola
It totally depends on the dog. My 35 lb mix can eat things much faster than my grey, for example. I don't think half a frozen turkey neck would even take her 2 whole minutes. biggrin.gif

Ditto to everyone else - depends on the dog and their eating style. Ours took a good 6-7 minutes to get through a whole neck last year when we started them on raw, but now necks take maybe two minutes, tops, since they're expert rawbies.

If you're looking for a more challenging meal, you could always try turkey wings - I get GIGUNDO ones from a local grocer and cut them at the joints to make three meals from each wing. They take longer than the necks to get through, but they are still soft-boned and easy to digest.
