Full Version: Raw Chicken Parts

OK..I only feed Gunny dry kibble and that's what I want to continue doing. She does perfectly well on that. But my question is this:

I just cleaned 2 small whole chickens, removing the stuff they stuff in the cavities: neck, gizzards, heart, livers...etc. We don't eat those. But can I give some to Gunny along with her normal meals, sort of as a treat? Not all of it at once but maybe a small neck with tonight's dinner, a couple of gizzards with her breakfast, and so on?

This is assuming she'll eat it... dunno.gif

I give Riley an ocassional neck and he does ok. He's kibble fed too.

Yes, it's fine. Just don't cook the neck. Mine swallow the neck whole rolleyes.gif but they've never had any problems because of it. They are raw fed 80% of the time.
GunnyGirl
OK, cool. I knew not to cook the neck part, but I'm just not going to cook any of it. It's a small chicken, so I'm guessing Gunny will most likely not chew any of it anyway.

As for her not eating it???? OMG...I just gave her a heart (I think it was a heart), and she barely sniffed it before inhaling it without chewing. Not eating these things will not be a problem. lol.gif

Yep, they love those pieces parts, don't they lol.gif . As soon as I pull a whole chicken out, I have the whole crew surrounding me. They know they're going to get treats.

i'd cut up the innards 1st if they're inhaling them without chewing so as to slow them down a bit. blue & millie like raw chicken legs, but the bones slow them down there. i did a stir fry last nite and they sat around while i cut out the gristle and ligaments from the white meat fillets for them before starting the fry....

Well, Gunny is weird. I put another heart and some, what appeared to be livers, in with her kibble and she picked out all the kibble, every single bit and left the raw parts. blink.gif Earlier in the day, I had offered her the other raw heart as a treat and she ate it right down.

Tomorrow I'll cook up the parts, except for the necks and I know she'll eat them cooked. As for the raw necks, I'll try and give her one tomorrow and see what happens.

She is not that picky...I don't understand it. What dog wouldn't LOVE raw animal flesh????

Actually many dogs don't like raw liver at first. Even my "eat anything" dog refused to look at it (I gave it to her in her crate and she squished herself as much as she could into the opposite corner of the crate, lol). I sprinkled it with some garlic powder, seared it for just a second on each side in a hot pan, let it cool, and after that she loved it. After that I gave it to her mostly frozen a few times (the texture is nicer apparently) and since then she will eat in any way I serve it.

You might want to try some of those. You should only need it for the liver though, that's the squishy slimy one. wink.gif

Lego loves food but is picky,if I put stuff in his food that he doesn't like, he'll just nibble around it and leave what he doesn't want. If yours doesn't want to eat it, so be it, so long as Gunny eats other stuff.

Frank likes all of the "parts" but he seems to prefer them partially frozen, like the rest of his raw food. I put a piece of liver or a heart, a neck, etc... in the freezer bags with his chicken leg quarters when I package them up.
